It better not be a period drama! I hate period dramas.

Apparently, one in every four dramas is a period drama

Just when you thought Japanese film couldn't get any weirder, House came along. A cult horror/comedy art fest - http://cinemassacre.com/2012/02/06/house-1977/

I've been singing House's praise for a while now. Out Evil Dead's the Evil Dead dare I suggest. An insane triumph of a film.

Is it actually watchable though, like the way the Evil Dead is, no matter what type of mood your in. Or do you have to go to art college to appreciate its nuances?

    I wouldn't call it nuanced ;)

I personally think it's terrific fun and very accessible. There are bits in the middle that drag, and I know the endlessly repeated theme tune drove my friends mad when I showed it to them, but there are so many moments of sheer insanity it barely matters. It looks great too - like a bubblegum pop music video crossed with a watercolour painting. And very, very funny at times.

It is totally loopers, and Id be lying if I said everyone would love it. But it's a very playful and energetic film. One of my favourites, probably.

Genuinely, and no messing, this is one of the best threads on retro gaming I think I've ever read. It's up there, actually no, it's better than the thread by the guy who brought home a full Galaxian theatre, which is still a work in progress and has been going on for just over 6 years!

    The Duke of Lancaster story

I think we can all agree, that's some story (on both counts).

Does anyone know if those cheap multi scart adapters support RGB, and if so can they impact on quality?

    Thanks guys

Hadn't read either of those stories. Mind. Blown.

A ship sitting there, full of arcade games, for 30 years? Cannot compretend!

To be safe, go with the ones which have buttons you press. I've used them for ages and picture quality is perfect.

I got this one from amazon and there's no signal loss or degradation on it(I'm very fussy, so if there was it would be in the bin). It's also fully RGB.

    Edit:
As o1s1n said, go for the ones with buttons. Those auto switching ones are not to be trusted.

    Edit 2:
If you want so serious scart cables get these.

Amazing build quality on them and Duronic cables are usually crazy expensive.

Both stories are insane. The guy with the Galaxian theatre must be absolutely mad. He's actually building a dedicated extension to his home just to house it.

It's taken him over a year to source two of the five laserdisc players needed to run the game too. I reckon he'll still be looking for parts 6 years from now.

The Duke Of Lancaster story is crazy isn't it? I think my family ventured on that ship many moons ago. It closed down shortly before I was born, 32 years ago. Those games have been there that long!

Even crazier, up until 1978 that ship made the trek from Holyhead to Done Lay-o-guh-hair (sorry but Dun Laoghaire is NOT Dun Leary as far as I'm concerned! :p). Maybe some of you (looking at Adultappleflavouredbeveragemale here :D) or your parents travelled on that ship and played the games?

Fascinating stuff, genuinely interesting not even because of the games.

My jaw was on the floor in awe while reading the Galaxian theatre tale. The Lancaster one almost had me shedding a manly tear in amazement at the sheer weirdness of the location and the condition of the cabs.

Is that Galaxian theatre a one off? The work that went into disassembling the thing is just mind blowing. And there were so few people. The whole time I was reading it, I was just thinking 'how the hell are they going to assemble this?! seriously?!' - and then it'd get even worse, with millions of cables. The amount of PCBs in those three metal containers.

And the step down box?!

When I saw the LD players I knew you'd be all over that :pac:

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 5,328 ✭✭✭Pyongyang

Those LD players, I think are a) expensive and b) a bit on the rare side. I believe that the discs are designed to work only in those specific players. I stand to be corrected though.

The 'cabinet', or more accurately, the theatre was not installed in many places, at least not to my knowledge. There was one larger version that may/may not be in service at a Namco park in Japan. The gargantuan 48 player Galaxian theatre.

I can't imagine anyone insane enough to bring that home... unless it was a Darius game. :p

The new Twisted Metal game looks really impressive and fun.

So impressive, I'd almost buy a PS3 just to be able to play the damn thing.

I neglected all the previous games in the series,

I'm going to have to boot up epsxe and play the **** out of Twisted Metal 2 soon.

    Buggeration!

Just found out, tonight, that I am getting the heave ho and moving from my nice community house, just far enough outside the city limits of Balbriggan to be safe from the gangs of roaming inhabitants.
I am heading back into the mothership, Portrane!
Mixed feelings about this one, it's been a while I have to say, but I relish a challenge and was getting a bit soft out in the care of the elderly...
    Challenging times ahoy!!!
Ah, won't be too bad, the staff are great and I have a fellow nerd in there for company!
No more sneaky game deliveries to my work address though!

Em, no kidding :D That was a firm tongue in cheek comment :)

I might give it a go, I'm just slightly put off by how insane it might be. I like being able to follow whats actually going on in films, but it does look very artistic!

I was going through a few of my older hard drives last night moving the data across to newer ones(retro data, so important to keep safe). I came across a very nice folder full of arcade cabinet plans, pictures, vectors, information and guides on how to build a cab from scratch and how to wire the whole thing and lots more.

Lots of plans for older original arcade machines as well if you wanted to build a replica.

Some of the plans seem to come from 2001/2 and some are from jakobud.com buts there's lots more than that and they're all still relevant.

Anyone want these? Its 547MB but might come in handy for planning a cab or cab repairs.

I've attached a few sample files and the below pic to give an idea of what's there.

Reminds me of a cab I saw online that used a CRT based iMac from 2000/2001, it popped right in the top with plenty of sockets to wire in controls etc.
A guy on Adverts has one for pretty reasonable money, reckon I could have it for €40, not sure what I would do with it though, I have enough Mame type devices as it is, with the Ikea cab, Imame4all on the ipad2, iphone 3GS and the HTC Desire...
Is there such a thing as being all mame'd out??
Getting far more interested in procuring a Bubble Bobble and Galaga/Pacman PCB tbh...

I'll sort out a download link for that arcade cab stuff a little later.
Not sure if i can post it here, Mods???

    Hi Jack
Just wanted to bring that Mega Drive PCM audio demo back up to show you something that will blow your mind.

Here's a demo of the C64 SID chip playing at almost twice the sample rate!

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3ImB_j7J1uM

    Thats right,
    the audio is playing @ 8bit, 48Khz!!!

It uses the 16MB RAM expansion of the 1541 Ultimate cart, to load the audio file into memory.

But it's all processed by the 1mhz cpu of the commodore, and all the audio is coming through the SID.

Right, here's a link to that arcade cab stuff I found.

    http://www.retrovia.ie/showthread.php/8936-Arcade-Cabinet-Plans-Info-and-Loads-More

I'll leave the thread it links to open for 2 days so those who want it can grab it.

    Edit:
I've assigned a little extra bandwidth to the server this is sitting on so it should be able to max out most peoples bband.
There might be a few hundred people grabbing this(other blogs and forums) so if the speed drops to a few MB a second give it a min and the server will compensate for the extra users and speed up again.

Double Fine have gotten over $1 million in less than 24 hours.

And publishers wouldn't touch a graphic adventure game.
