Well, I thought it was funny: Abercrombie & Fitch are so annoyed at the Jersey Shore characters wearing their clothes that they're offering to pay them not to wear A&F clothes. They don't care who knows, either - they put out a press release about their offer to "The Situation":

"We are deeply concerned that Mr. Sorrentino's association with our brand could cause significant damage to our image. We understand that the show is for entertainment purposes, but believe this association is contrary to the aspirational nature of our brand, and may be distressing to many of our fans. We have therefore offered a substantial payment to Michael 'The Situation' Sorrentino and the producers of MTV's The Jersey Shore to have the character wear an alternate brand. We have also extended this offer to other members of the cast, and are urgently waiting a response."

I've been at UCD in Dublin 4 for four years now, and I think there are quite a few local students who could use some of A&F's money too ... now to find someone in PR for Ugg Boots.

What A&F are trying to do is useless, if its not on TV its on the streets of everytown around the world you will see scumbags and the like with well known brands. When you pay that much its not just the bag you are buying, its the experience and the 'status' you are getting. Some people buy a new bag every month for 30 quid, I choose to buy one or two a year. A fake wouldn't last that long as quality tends to be sh@t.

This is the part I don't get. How is the experience different?

As a man, I don't judge a woman based on her brand of handbag or what it looks like. To be honest, I wouldn't really notice her handbag unless it had a swastika on it or something.
Though if my girlfriend spent €500 on a handbag I'd probably tell her how silly I thought that was.

At the end of the day, it's your choice and your money and I don't criticise you for buying what you want, but I have to admit I do find it hard to understand the idea of spending so much money on something that to me is so trivial.

I did not say I bought the bag for the experience and status, its the marketing idea behind all high priced items, same goes for newer versions of lap tops, all Apple products, luxury cars etc...

It's nothing to do with how much money she spent. It's her belief that owning an item with a certain label on it can add to her "status" that I find ridiculous.

Also the material in expensive stuff for females such as shoes, dresses and bags is rarely any better than the material/stitching in the cheaper stuff. The cheap stuff is the same stuff that was expensive two months ago. Clothing for women can be 90% cheaper after a month or two.

Paying €450 just so that you have a few weeks of telling people how much you spent on a new bag just seems [INSERT DEROGATORY ADJECTIVE HERE].

I don't get it. Cos if you walk into A&F or even Hollister (owned by Abercrombie) you see tall, well built and tanned models/shop assistants wearing their clothes? It's like walking onto the set of Jersey Shore when you walk into their stores.
