Bought a new gun

Well lads after weighing up everything after much heartwrenching I decided to sell my .22 magnum. Absolutely loved the gun but the price of bullets had gone away up and I recently started reloading. I was left with a situation where I could reload centrefire ammo for cheaper than I could buy rimfire :o

I had seriously looked at the .204, but I have brass, dies and cleaning kit for .223 so that is the route I decided to go.

So here she is, bought and paid for, just waiting for the licence to come through, should be here next week:

Stainless action and 26” fully fluted varmint barrel. 1:12 twist
Screw cut 5/8x18UNF and target crowned by Dave Wylde at Valkyrie Rifles.
Rifle Basix light pull trigger (will include original trigger too).
Jewelled bolt with tactical bolt knob by Anglo Custom Rifle.
The bolt was lapped in by Dave Wylde to ensure the locking lugs get max contact.
    Leupold mounts.
    1” medium rings (make unknown).
Excellent HS Precision Stock. Very rigid with alloy bedding block. MUCH better than the newer stocks.
    Stainless sling studs fitted.
    ASE Northstar moderator.

An excellent rifle which has had a bit of ‘improvement’ here and there. Loves 40, 50 & 53 grain V-Max as well as their Sierra equivalent. Well looked after and cleaned regularly.

Thanks lads, I'm really looking forward to getting her!
It was a shame to let the magnum go, it was my first and favourite... :o

My main problem is now that I can't afford a suitable scope to sit on the .223. I have the 6x42 off the magnum, but the rets are thick and mag low :(

Put whatever you have to hand for a start it'll get you by for bit,

The son had a Bushnell 4-12x40mm Banner on his CZ .223 and it does the job well. So there's no need to go expensive till you can ;)

Had the same problem recently. Went with the Hawke Sidewinder 30, against my better judgement, and she is working a treat on my .308. Holding zero, has side parallex adjustment, green and red illuminated reticle, 1/4" click value thats sharp, the turrets rise to be adjusted and push down to lock so tyou cannot accidently adjust. Also comes with a full refund/replacement guarantee.

The only criticism i have is on full mag (mine is the 8-32) the glass would not be near NF/S&B/Swar/Zeiss standards, but at 20% of the value i wasn't expecting it to be.

I never thought i'd say this, but a decent scope for little money. €390.

I'm thinking of taking a punt on a Konus scope. It's an m30 8.5-32x52. I was looking through one the other day and it looked ok.

I read the reviews on Midway USA and you would think it was a good as a Leupold; although the reviews said the same about the Bushnell Buckhorn I bought and it was crap...

I would rather a quality SH scope so I might hold off and just use the 6x42 for now...

It's funny how you'd go for a x32 scope but in reality you will never use it at that zoom, you always think you will but never do.

I'd go for a bigger objective lens before big zoom, it lets more light/image through to your eye. 6-24x50mm is about right and you will find you'll use it at about the 10-15 zoom most of the time.

    just my 2 cents worth.

Yeah I know, especially saying with that twist I cant see me shooting past 250yards. On the other hand, I never use a variable scope at 6x either; so I may as well have the excess at the upper end!

Unless I rob a post office I think I'm going to have to live within my means for a while
I had my eye on a ex-demo Sightron that was with a company that would have taken the Schmidt as a trade in, but just checked there now and it's gone...

Very true. Cean had an 8-32 and 6-24, and the Father wanted the 6-24 so i took the 8-32. I've only used the high mag for two things. Zooming right in when zeroing or to scan a distance away. Other than that its usually between 8-12 power. Plus on the lower power the clarity is better.

I'm a firm believer in i'd rather have it and not need it than need it and not have it.:)

I bought a 6-24 x56 sidewinder of sean in stakelums myself last weekend, only got to zero it so far on my sako .223, gets a bit dull past 20x but seems a cracking scope for the money, not near the quality of my old schmidt but glass seems pretty good really want a zeiss 6-24x but will be a while before i can afford one even though i know of a spotless one goin at an ok price, hopefully nobody will buy it in the next 2 months:D
What reticle did you go for? I have the half mildot and really like it

Oh nearly forgot, cracking looking rifle, best of luck with it

Well I think I have come to a solution.
I'm going to put my spare Schmidt 6x42 on the .223. (not the one I'm selling, I actually have another!)
Then I'm going to save up and buy a Zeiss Conquest 6.5-20x50 from the states. I'll put the Zeiss on my .270 and the Leupold 6.5-20x40 on the .223.

Then I will lie through my teeth and tell the female that the Zeiss costs less than whatever I get for the Schmidt I'm selling :p

Ooooooh fancy. No recession around here.:p

The Zeiss will be nice on top of the rifle. Every gun/scope i buy is €100. Although i think she is getting suspicious. Seeing as how we couldn't eat after the last €100 rifle. :o

I can't/wouldn't sell the Hungarian one beacuse the tube is crimped :o
Optically it is perfect and it doesn't affect performance, but it will have to stay all the same....

My female knows they aren't €100 (unfortunately) but I'll stick with the one paying for the other excuse!!!

Thanks mate. I have powder and primers for it ordered today (I have to notify explosives branch in advance).

The guy is giving me the reloading data on friday, but I know I need reloader 7 and to be 10 thou from the lands using 50gr v-max so what I'll do is load up 40 rounds or so at the start of next week and then when the licence comes through I should be ready to rock and roll.

I may call to the gundealer's tomorrow evening to measure the headspace and mount the scope so that when I do get the licence I'm ready for shooting!

Do tell those of us on the mainland why you have to do that. Obviously, here we don't.

Why do you need to have the headspace checked? Has there been a problem noted by the previous owner?

I don't know why the hell we have to do it, but I have to get a cert from the explosives branch every time I need powder. And by the way, I don't know where you're on the Mainland of, but it aint Antrim!

No there's no problem with the headspace. The previous owner has a load developed shooting cloverleaf groups using reloader 7 and v-max heads seated 10 thou from the lands. So rather than cut my own path, I've ordered reloader 7, and I'm going to seat v-max's 10 thou from the lands! :)

I called to the dealer last night and held her for the first time. Front heavy, but very steady! :D

I was holding it last night it's not much heavier or longer than my girlfriend ;) and I've put up with her weighing me down for 5 years!!! :D
I don't think I'll be rambling the Glens with it; or I'll need a prosthetic shoulder!

I'd say she's take me saying that my new rifle is heavier than her as a compliment!.. But it may lead to more piggy-backs home from the pub! 'My feet are sore!'
