I was in looking at .22lr rifles at the local gun shop today. there was a few kricos and a sako for the 250 - 325 euro price range (inc various scopes / slings etc)

I know next to nothing about rifles but would like to have one for rabbits. Can anyone tell me are these brands good and what I should look out for etc when looking over them?

i went in with the intention of looking at any .22lr CZ's but there was only one at 485euro which is well outside my price range

Have a look around lad. There are loads of CZs available and as many with scope, sling, etc for under €400. not being a smart ass, but look around more. They are out there. In two guns shops recently and there was between 6 - 9 secondhand CZ's, not counting the few new ones.

Krico i've never used so won't comment.

Sako i have. Terrific rifle. Reliable and a well built. Was it the Quad or FinnFire model?

Of the 2 i'd recommend the Sako. Have one myself(Quad albeit .17HMR) and very happy with it. Very accurate.
But as has been said look around, you could literally fall over all the .22lr's in most dealers.

Ya, I intend to have a look in a few, might try and make it to cork city one of these days. I don't actually know what model the sako was. It was a nice looking gun. Also I am left handed and they didn't have any left handed rifles in. I think I'll manage with a right handed one if I have to though. They had loads of Krico's (maybe 5 or 6) and the sako.
I read on here that the sakos can have problems ejecting live rounds? Is that much of a problem or is there a work around?
And of the 2 would the sako or cz be better or is it much of a muchness?

i doubt it was a quad for under 400 even 2nd hand unless it was in poor condition!

For a lefty, go with the CZ452 American. Lovely rifles and come in left hand in .22 and .17 HMR. Want one myself down the line.

I have the 452 american in 17hmr, I'm delighted with it. There isn't much of a "twist" or whatever its called on the stock so i'd imagine it would be good for a lefty aswel.

Mostly the CZ 22lr's in ireland new and 2nd hand are the Lux model. OP, the Lux has a "hogsback" stock which is designed for easy use of the open sights, although they can all be fitted with a scope. As already said, there are loads of second hand Cz's in your price range, but it will be hard to find a left handed one but as you say you will manage fine with a right handed gun.

The year is written on the action ('76 '04 etc), and since your buying second hand don't go too old! Try get one from say '00 onwards and you can't go wrong. Shoulder the gun and look down the sights and see if its comfortable, some stocks have more of a twist than others which in a right handed gun will be less comfortable for you.

The word you are looking for is 'cast'. Usually applied to shotguns.

Savage also do a .22LR in left hand. They are very reasonable & accurate - I've one.

A Sako for around €400 second hand is brilliant value if it's in any fair nick.

With the amount of second hand rifles about I would hang out to see if a left handed version becomes available.....I've fired a right handed one & it's much more comfortable to reload with left-handed version.

Buy once & be finished with it.

thanks for all the replies lads.
The sako looked like a nice clean gun but I wouldn't know much about the mechanics so maybe they were worn? Or maybe it was ancient!

I will try and hold out for a left handed CZ, but being a bit impulsive I find it hard lol! was very close to putting a deposit on the sako like!

Thanks for all the advice, this forum is brilliant help :)

I'm left handed & have a Savage MkII in lefthand thumbhole. It's a fine rifle, very accurate and fits like a glove but for quality and construction it's not in it with my Sako Quad. The Quad is right handed but I don't find that an issue at all.
Now unless you really must have a left hander I wudnt bother, you're really limiting your choices. And you may find it hard to change. I put my Savage up for sale for a while cos I got some quare notions. There was a bit of interest but nothing substantial. Anyway I realised I was doing the wrong thing as I don't need to sell and it's a special rifle. Main thing is to find something that fits you.

i have the CZ 22lr with a lux stock

I'm right handed but use it left because of my vision and i have to say i don't find it any problem at all. some times i get caught to take a shot right handed and swop over for another shot straight away and its not a problem

Also as the other rifles are good most people will say that the cz is one of the best factory built rifles for the money and as it has already been said there is loads of them. and they will shoot tight groups all day long no prob

    BE PATIENT

the right on will come along best of luck with the buy

Check out Patrick Carley's website. He has a cz 452 .22lr with scope in very good condition for €295 on the site. Spoke to him on the phone before about something else and he came across as a sound old skin.

I'm a lefty, but i have no problem at all with the standard right handed CZ 452 Silhouette in .22
use it loads and never ever has it been a problem so i wouldn't worry about holding out for a left handed version, as long as its in good nick you should go for it. very reliable rifle.
