Lads, Sorry if this is a stupid question, but this is my 1st stalking season and I received my hunting license today from the NPWS and the letter from them about the "Invasive Species" (Muntjac).

How widespread are Muntjac really ?

Are Muntjac as edible and palatable as Fallow, Sika & Red Deer ?

Again, sorry if these questions have been already answered.

Any animal that eats grass is tasty normally

    I'd eat one.
Need someone from Wickla to invite me up to find one though

Was discussing this the other day on this thread. No-one really knows for sure. Its all guess work at this point.
    Are Muntjac as edible...........

Can't see why not. Wouldn't imagine there would be much on them.
................ and palatable as Fallow, Sika & Red Deer ?

Wouldn't have a notion. Due to the lack of sightings let alone actual returns i wouldn't imagine there are many, if any, actual people whom have tried it.
Again, sorry if these questions have been already answered.

Not yet. :) Heres hoping we get some this season.

They were tucking into muntjac at the midlands game fair two years ago- i couldn't get any as the que was too big- they were also eating grey squirrel and the idea was to encourage more people to shoot them. I haven't seen any myself although the ranger up here reacons they are fairly widespread. If I get one this year your all invited to a BBQ :)

Ya,i've heard the same from guys in England, they're supposed to be the tastiest of the deer species he shoots, this includes roe ,fallow, sika, red, and chinese water deer.
Saying that, deer is probably like sex,no matter how bad it is,its still fairly good,if ya can get it:p:p:p.

Edible yes but I don't know of anyone who has eaten one I have hunting mates in UK and will get back to you

they are not at all widespread
there was an attempted introduction in Wickla a while ago
dont think they spread but they are small shy beasties and not easy to see

I would reckon in time to come they will be a lot more wide spread in wicklow .
    In my opinion.

By the look of the tusks on them I often wonder would they taste like wild pig - if so then they would be ideal on one of those squewers:D

given how small and secretive they are supposed to be it will probably be a while until we see more of them.

Muntjac is excellent venison, tried it a few times in Malaysia.
Just a pity there is so little on them. friend in England shoots them and described them as dressing out at about twice the size of a good hare.

+1, they are like small mountain lambs, a ferocious amount of butchering for very little meat, and a load of bones, but verrry tasty. I tried it at a UK country fair years ago.

Have to say I disagree with you on this point. We've spotted them on our lands in West Wicklow. Most unwelcome creatures around here they are and they taste delishious!

I think you misread. He didn't say " of " them he said " on " them. As in there is feck all meat on them.
