got some last weekeng at Mick Duggans, havent tried them yet price wise they weren't any different to the Federal V-Shok that I usually use

Is that the price for 1 box or how much you paid per box for the 10 boxes, was thinking maybe if a few of us chipped in for 5 or 10 boxes each and bought a crap load of them off a dealer we might get a very good deal on them

I asked for Bulk discount and I was "told" no.
But I have a box to try out so I'll see how they go.

If they shoot as good as I hope, I'll buy 200 of them :)

Ya i'll have to buy a box myself 1st and test them out then stock up for the winter if they perform well, if not i'll stick with the 55gr vmax

    Have to find a scope 1st though:rolleyes:

If someone spots stuff for the .25-06, give me a shout. Wouldn't mind trying it. I have my ammo for the season but I can always be persuaded to try something else. Also looking for 115 gr Winchester ballistic silvertip at the moment too.

tried out my superformance tonight, Nailed 2 foxes both at close to 200 yards ....Thanks to Poulo for holding the lamp,my little 223 has come of age.. but they are some bullet
Poulo has the pictures, one fox (a cub) was nearly turned inside out

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,034 ✭✭✭✭It wasn't me!

Paddy Carley has some for the .25-06 it seems, going to call him tomorrow about possibly couriering up a box or two. If anyone else shoots a .25 and wants to split an order and make it more worth his while, let me know. If I get them, I'll see about taking a fox to see what the 117 gr does to one and we can compare it with the .223. :D

Here you go. This is the first one shot by 4gun with his Luger .223 with 53gr superformance.
    Cub at 200+ yards.

Then with a bit of luck I managed to call in a second fox in the opposite field. Again about 200 yards out. And again nailed by 4gun.
    This is both fox together.

Is it just me or has anyone else had "trouble" with the Superperformance in .308 in certain rifles? Well not me as much as the Father. Quick story.

Father got himself a new scope. Done all the usual mounting, zeroing, etc. i have been buying SuperP. whenever i had a spare few quid. I had a good few boxes so used a few to test his groups. The first 1,2,3 shots were fine. All tacking albeit a little high, and slightly right. Then the 4th went higher and more to the right, and finally the fifth shot went out the furthest, but again high and right. All in all they were only 1.5 - 2 inches apart but there seemed to be a noticeable spread on the shots.

To make sure there was no fault with rifle or scope i done the same test, firing qickly with 5 rounds of HPS 155gr, Remmy 165gr, TAP 150gr.

Other than a slight shift in POI for the Remmy they all made one hole groups. I then tried the S/P in my Savage. No nother. All one hole.

The Father's is a 1;11.25 and mine a 1:10. His loves the TAP and Remmy, not the HPS (so much, although as a target round its irrelevant). Mine liked the TAP and the HPS, but not the Remmy.

I think i posted before that i Chrono'd the S/P and got average speeds of 3150. To confirm i tested different rounds with known speeds and they were right so the chrono works.

I'm wondering if the S/P simpy does not fire well through his Remmy, or is it the 1:11.25 teist thats the problem.

There is yes and no to the s/p . Two mates of mine bought it for there .270s and they dont like it at all (wont group) . Another friend of mine has a 300wm and after the a few shots they start walking

I have not done extensive testing on the Superformance .308 on paper yet.

I zero'd and then shoot, deer foxes and a few bunnies and rooks.

I have a few Hornady 150grain soft nose,Tap and Super formance
I'l try and get a group pic next week if the weather improves.

Very hard to do any tests with this damp squibby weather.

My Remmy is 1/12 twist, but only 20" so long range accuracy is not really on the cards

Don't get me wrong they're a good round, but i wouldn't hold them up as the last thing in hunting ammo. As said in my rifle they are fine. In his not fine, but only after 3 consecutive shots.

Trouble is nobody wants to go out on the first day or any day with a rifle and ammo that you're "not sure of". So he has settled on using either TAP or the Remmy 165gr AccuTip. I, luckily, can use anything (except the Remmy). Gotta love the Savage. :)

Or a Remmy with a Truflite, will eat anything :D from American Eagle to Premium all run well

The Superformance are UNREAL on deer.

Remmy with TrueFlite barrel - €1800.

Savage out of the box - €900.

    Suck it. :D:p

Also no matter how effective it is on a deer if it cannot hit the fecking thing then they're useless.

I reckon its the speed of the bullet. A bullet doing in excess of 3100fps out of a 24" barrel is ............... well ................. madness really. I reckon the reason the TAP and Remmy work better is because of the reduced speeds. Average 2690 - 2730fps. Fast is not always best.

Not like with Like, My Remmy is .223
And your savage .308 uses someone elses barrel :D
I never missed a deer yet with my FACTORY Remmy
Or a fox, or a bunny, did miss a greycrow or two, but they are twitchy bastardos

All 200 yards mark so no need for target accuracy really

Moderate velocities are a lot nicer on the ears too. Good a reason as any to shoot them.

Was in a dealers today and we were talking about superperformance as he was after getting it in, he said he's heard some stories about it, primers popping and stuff like that, too much pressure in the cases when fired, stories you usually only hear about hot reloads, still dyin to get some in .223 though:D

If I could handload, I'd have a 6.5x55. 140gr bullet about 2800-2850. Absolutely perfect, and very easy on the ears in a 24" barrel. With the .25, no way I can get a follow up shot off without a mod. It's properly deafening. Easily as loud as a .300 magnum or the like with a 24" barrel.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 584 ✭✭✭Mauser 308

I imagine they would be harder on the barrel also with the extra speed?
I have a 1/11 twist and find they grouped great but I only tried a few in a test and then went back to FMJ cheep stuff for trigger time. I hope they are ok as I have 200 sitting here.

But seriously, any rifle over a .22lr use a Moderator if shooting a lot.

Any one know what does the super performance stuf do out of 6.5 x 55?,

Good advice, but my criteria is that it can't deafen me so badly I can't get a follow up shot off properly, and I'd rather not use a mod if I can avoid it, but I can't with the .25, so have to suffer for the time being. Can use ear defenders for zeroing and blowing up crows and rabbits from fixed positions, but for stalking, a moderate round that can get a second shot off quickly without disturbing me would be really nice. My .25 is about the nastiest sounding thing I've ever heard without a mod.

It's still nothing special. Problem is factories can only load to book pressures, which are curtailed to be safe in older actions in the case of a lot of old classics like the 6.5x55, 7x57 and so forth. Loading them up to appropriate pressures in a modern action (past the book obviously, but there's a wealth of information out there) they're serious contenders. It's why I'd love to handload. I'd definitely be shooting different stuff if I were handloading for it. I think the 139 Hornady makes something like 2770 fps in 6.5x55, which is only 80 fps ahead of the figure Norma publishes for its 140gr partition load, and is still nearly 100 fps short of what the cartridge is well capable of. 2800 is easily achievable, without expensive specialist ammo, and with any typical 140gr bullet you choose, if only you could handload it.

Get a Roedale, only adds grams, and you can have them real short to just tone down and not fully moderate.

Tinnitus is like Chinese water torture, when shooting a deer you often forget that you are near a wall or a shed that will bounce the sound

I would never fire the .308 any more or the .223 without a mod on, means you can shoot more than one deer in the one sitting two without disturbing the hole parish

I will when I get a chance, but no cash, and saving for a few different things at the moment so definitely won't be this year.

Being produced in the land of lawsuits i doubt any manufacturer would produce a "dangerous" round. However the speeds i was etting were so high i checked the cases. There is the usual flattening, but nothing excessive and no other pressure signs. I reckon Hornady have brought the round to the limit of lawyer friendly and stopped. Probably using a much faster burning powder as all there ammo is tested on 24" barrels so nothing they do would be a mistake.
    Mauser 308 wrote: »

Possibly. Reduce barrel life but with a .308, and a minimum expected barrel life of 3,500 rounds that wouldn't concern me too much.
I hope they are ok as I have 200 sitting here.

    They are fine. Honestly.
I fired from between two stone walls on my uncles farm once and I near deafened myself.

Firing once with a muzzle break on. Put up barriers to protect the lads either side of me. Fired. The blast came out hit the barriers and came back at me. Was like getting a slap to the face.:(

Thats my feelings on the matter. I'm shooting just fine without one on my rifle, and have no intention of getting a mod. The choice is always there, but for the moment i'm happy i can get a few shots off relatively quickly without the mod.

I don't really follow what your saying there IWM, is it that you could use a mod but you won't for some reason, I've a deposite down on a .25-06 with a 20inch barrel I think it was a big mistake and I should have got at least a 24inch but it'll definately be moderated to try and calm it down a bit.

Tack I only bought them cos you and Paulo were raving about them. :D
I think they will be fine, or at least I hope so, in my experience Hornady tend to know their stuff. I was impressed by the grouping but will fire a box or two during the week and see how they go when they get hot. Have not fired one at a live animal so only going by your and Paulo's vast experience:P. But I do think we need a good debate on what is the best deer hunting bullet type is ie not just to kill the animal stone dead on the spot and destroy half the carcase. There has to be a balance between a good clean kill and undamaged meat. I will hopefully start a depate tomorrow on that.;)

With a mod, it's a kitten (I have a Reflex on mine, think it's a T10, big bugger anyway) but at 20", it'll deafen you without it, awful noise. Personally, I'd rather not have a mod on a sporting rifle. They should be lightweight and quick in the hands, and the big lump on the end spoils that. Same for the fact that they should be no longer than necessary, and I like longer barrels (around 24" is perfect for most stuff, but I'd go 26" for something as barky as a .25-06 or any magnum). It's a great round, very easy to shoot, and you'll enjoy it, especially if you're already planning to use a mod, but I'd rather be using something I could happily use without one if I could. However, that means handloading.

Foxes are a great warm up.
There is no need to start a debate, over the past few years I have been on boards,ie there has been at least 3-4 min threads

If you shoot in the head you damage least meat but need most accuracy. If you saw me use my hands to scoup out pints of blood from a chest cavity with an exploded heart/Lung deer a few weeks ago.

But for Fear of being Lynched for going off thread, that is another story.

Seen an interesting article in the this months Irish shooters digest, re deer bullet and calibre choice. It has an example of a head shot deer and pointed out the fact that the deer could not be bled properly as the heart had stoped working straight away. Thats my debate, not what we have found best in our own experience but what is scientificaly provento be the best way to kill deer and leave the best meat.

    1. Don't get me started on ISD
    2. Did you not see a heart beating in Paulos hand after teh bunny was headshot
    3. If you ever worked in a slaughter house, you'd be very familiar with teh most effective method of killing animals and bleeding

But we are noooooooooooooot talking about Superformance and going into another thread, which also has been done to death "pardon the Pun" more times than I care to remember.

Just put deer calibres into the hunting thread, or shot placement and you will see more pages than in the Old & New Testament :D
