    Hello all,

Before i ask for help please understand i'm USELESS with computors from any other aspect other than basic usage. So if any answers are forthcoming please keep them "dumb". Appreciate it.

To the problem. I got a new modem from 3 Ireland. The guy called it a dongle (is that right?) I got the original 3 years ago and he told me the new one would work up to 5 times faster, etc, etc. Anyway i was having a few teething problems so rang their helpdesk. The problem was my internet/e-mail settings were trying to work of my old modem so i had to reset the modem settings, remove all the old drivers, etc and re-install the new one.

The lady on the phone was a foreigner. Thats not an issue but there was a slight problem bewteen her and myself in our understanding of each other. Basically she told me to remove all modem drivers, and everything else related to modem to give a clean slate. As i was removing them i kept listing them off to her to make sure it was the right ones.

Long story short i removed the Agere device driver which i assume is actually from the Laptop and not from 3 as everytime i tried to connect it said this was missing and nothing would work until it was installed. The laptop is 3-4 years old and is the embodiment of simpleness. It has no camera, limited storage (64GB), etc. I cannot find the original driver CD if one even came with the Laptop. i tried contacting 3 but they told me that i shouldn't have removed it, and when i told them of their co-workers "help" they told me to fix the problem and contact them back about the modem. I then tried contacting Acer, but as the laptop is out of warranty they wouldn't help. They gave me a number to ring to get out of service help but all the numbers were disconnected.

I remembered that i had Agere on the home PC so found the files, and copied them to the laptop. I stored them under "Program Files" on the latop. When the laptop asked me to "Install CD / Find via manual search" i selected manual, Program files and install. It done so successfuly (kinda).

Problem i now have is the modem was meant to be 5 times faster. Its probable as slow if not slower than the old one. Everytime i try to connect to the net i get the old "Dial up connection window", Install device driver (for Agere), then the 3 Ireland connect box. I have to try and install the Agere driver, then connect to 3, cancel the Agere install and then close the "Dial up connection window" just to connect. If i do this in any other order i cannot connect.

Also with my e-mail i still ahve manually selest "Connect via current connection" each time. This is a minor problem/inconveinence.

My biggest probelm is the Agere thing. Is there anyway to move the driver. Is there anywhere i can download it, and install it properly?

Any help for a tech moron is appreciated. Also apologies for the long and poor description of the problem.

Thankfully acer are one of the nicer vendors to find driver support etc for.

    http://support.acer-euro.com/drivers/notebook/as_5315.html

The agere modem is listed there. To check if you have vista sp1 (im assuming vista is the OS?) or not simply go to Control Panel>System.

Simple guide to uninstall a driver (also a guide to install adriver on that site):

Right ive used the link above, selected the correct driver, and "Saved" the driver/file. Its under D: however i'm still getting the same problems. I have to follow the procedure above ..........
I have to try and install the Agere driver, then connect to 3, cancel the Agere install and then close the "Dial up connection window" just to connect. If i do this in any other order i cannot connect.

.............to make it work and the pop up window asking for me to install the correct device driver still appears. When i select the newly downloaded driver the computor works for a few moments then says "Was not installed successfully .............. ".

I don't think D: drive is correct, but i honestly don't know where to save this to to make it function "automatically". Its not even on my list of modems when i bring it up via - Control panel / phone & modem options / Modems. Before all this crap the Agere was always on the list, at the top with a line like that on the enter key of a keyboard indicating a dropdown menu. Its not there still.

What am i not doing or doing wrong?

Again apologies for these simple questions. :o

Have been at this all bloody night, but think i've got it sorted.

I deleted everything. Restarted computer. Moved Agere that was downloaded into C drive. Installed and this time it stuck. The other file was corrupt, faulty or just not working so it went for a hop. The file from the suggested site above worked a treat and it now says device driver successfully installed. I connected the new modem and re-installed everything.

I now no longer have that annoying pop up window asking to install driver, and the modem seems to be working alot faster than before with up to 4-5 times faster download, etc.

So for now all is well. Thanks again for the link above.
