What do you shoot off in the field when you dont have a gate to shoot off lads. Bipod is no use in long grass or for quick shots. Cheers.

Some times you just have no choice but to shoot from the shoulder if theres no stakes or trees around, thats why i took the bipod of my .22 for a few months so i had no choice but to shoot freehand to practice for when out lamping, i was relying too much on the bipod

A friend of mine swears by sticks.
Personally I just shoot off the shoulder if I have no other choice. The rifle is enough for me to be carrying around the hills here.
Thats why I spend a good bit of time practicing shooting off the shoulder. I am fairly comfortable doing it now.

I usually carry sticks as i have a terrible free hand shot, but if its a quick shot then its either the kneeling position,

    .............. or the sitting position.

With a bit of practice its comfortable, easy & quick to get into. Plus you can "lock" yourself into a steady shooting position.

YOU can also wrap the sling around your elbow to form a triangle........

Freehand, sticks, sitting, kneeling, with sticks or sling. If I weren't using a moderator and therefore didn't have so much weight up front, I probably wouldn't use a bipod at all, to encourage me to use the sling.

My Savage isn't threaded and i've no plans to get it done plus lately i've stopped attaching the bipod. I bring it but see whether i need it or not. I'm finding the sitting shot with a sling covers most of my shooting needs. Anything else i use a post, gate, etc.

Adds a bit more enjoyment to the shooting rather than getting into the typical "F-Class" / prone position.:)

Heh, possibly my own competiton background speaking here but I love shooting prone with a sling and the sporting rifle. Sitting is extremely stable as well. Could easily shoot well over 200 yards with that.

Tight sling arced elbow and you can shoot off hand out to 150 or so in a push.

Kneeling or squatting as previously mentioned.
I have used the Bipod closed as a flat rest on countless things, rocks, gate posts, mounds of earth, feed troughs and in a real push Barbie wire

I have even used Paulo 6.5's shoulder as a rest in a push
