There's a difference between poor and scumbag of course. My Mom's family were dirt poor, but lovely people.

Right. I'm just saying that scumbaggy crime is rampant over there, driven by poverty.

To be fair most knackers are actually fairly sound in my experience.

What most people hate are 'hard kunts'. People who go around looking for fights, are fragile scrawny knackbags with a fake accent. Nobody likes a hard kunt and I hope that people will just smash them in the face every time they try to start something with someone who has done nothing to them. If everybody just smashed a hard kunt in the face every time they were trying to start something then they wouldn't be too long about stopping. Even if the guards saw you you know they would probably just let it go, I imagine guards in particular hate 'hard kunts'

As a rule I dont think extreme government legislation is a good solution for any problem. There might be one or two problems where radical measures might be called for but resorting to extreme measures usually doesnt end well. Just ask about it next time youre in Berlin !

You can say it all you want, but you also have to back it up with numbers and evidence and such.

Sadly the creators of the everyday language (for most of our population) have failed to recognise this word yet.

Closest we have is scally. (note scally is also an irish name)

    From oxford english dictionary
    * (in the north-west of England, especially Liverpool) a roguish self-assured young person, typically a man, who is boisterous, disruptive, or irresponsible.Origin:
    1980s: abbreviation of *scallywag

I am sure people thought anders was sound too , he is still a sociopath turned killer.

Just because some of them can be "sound" doesnt mean that they are not criminal scum.

Anyone who disagrees here obviously has never lived in Eastwall, Sherrif st, North strand, Talbot st, the Libertys, Marino, Fairview, Darndale, Belcamp (parts of it), Tallaght (most of it :P) Ballymun, Fingas ETC ETC the list goes on and on.

Just as nobody with a brain thinks that all 'poor' people are skangers, or even that all 'skangers' are bad, I don't think anyone is claiming that all middle-class people are good. I know very well what they can be like.

But have we really got so PC that we can't say that the majority of social problems (violence, problematic substance abuse, criminality etc.) come from one particular group of people?

I agree that there's a higher proportion of many forms of criminality among the poorest in society, the two tend to go hand in hand unfortunately.
I guess I just don't like when people don't acknowledge that for a lot of poor people growing up in tough areas, with parents themselves maybe resorting to crime and abusing drugs, it's tough to avoid getting into crime (though the OP rightly points out that being poor doesn't mean being a scumbag).

I guess I'd just prefer if attention was drawn to all anti-social behaviour, including by those who do it for kicks, and not just one section of society, even if it's more common to see such behaviour from this section of society.

This is like a slightly retarded version of that big anti-chav's meme in the UK a couple of years back. I couldn't open my email inbox at that time without getting some form of CHAVS, LOL drivel. Or some of my middle-class fellow students with crippling student loans referring to lower-working class people as commoners. Now it seems to have seeped into Ireland.

Suddenly middle class kids think that wearing ridiculously emblazoned middle class clothing and listening to inane twaddle on their blackberries makes them look less ridiculous than lower-working class people who wear ridiculous clothing, listening to another form on inane twaddle on their iphones.

One thing I like about many people of the older generation is how they were so un-self-conscious about appearance based on class lines. I know of one UK public-school educated Irishman who in a previous era would have been classified as 'landed gentry' who ties his trousers with rope and often tells stories of having been mistaken for a labouring old tramp.

There was also a level of equality attached to that generation, where it was considered good form to display a common courtesy with Lords and labourers, regardless of one's own social position.

Yet today, many people (and not just young people, in fairness) seem to want to organise themselves on hierarchies of vulgarity. Somewhere along the line wearing hideous, generic Tommy Hilfiger products became desirable and wearing hideous, generic 'skanger' products became hilarious. I don't think we're any better off for it.

People who constantly moan about skangers are usually the ones who would hide with their tail between their legs if confronted by them in public. How about you grow a set of balls and make an attempt to sort out problems yourself instead of asking mammy government to go out and scold the naughty boys while you sit at home peeking out from behind your filthy, moth ridden curtains?

Ok by Extreme I meant zero tolerance. ASBO's, no second chances for multiple offenders, no pity in the courts for murderes because they "had a hard upbringing" (Didnt we all!) etc etc.

America is absolutely full of scumbags. There's some appalling poverty over there.

That post created a mental link that doesn't exist.

Poverty isn't a choice. Scumbaggery is.

Lots of poor people aren't scumbags, and lots of really rich people are absolute slime.

I don't know what measures would work, that is why I asked what would people suggest to be done about it. Berlin is known for having an extremely high unemployment rate (or at least it was considered so when I was there a few years ago, I'm not a well read up economist) yet they didn't seem to have any of the loitering, street-drinking, violent & anti-social behaviour we experience. What is the difference? Do ze Germans grow up with a better respect for society? Or do their government police, educate and generally run the city in a diffrent (better) way to what we are used to here?

I'm just using this as a personal example of a city I was impressed with, what key differences are there in countries were anti-social behaviour aka skangerism is not a major problem, compared to our own, where there is a general feeling (almost daily discussions on boards.) that not enough is being done.

I hate them too, and would personally love to see them rounded up and dumped on an abandoned continent. Unfortunately there are none available anymore.

On a serious note, no, the government shouldn't be allowed restrict our freedoms based solely on suspicion and perceptions. If they commit a crime, then punish them appropriately.

I hate Skangers! I am sure most people do. Even secretly. I am sure Skangers hate themselves too, as they spent alot of time trying to kill themselves with drugs and fights and seem to enjoy getting themselves arrested or shot to top off a night on "the Buzz".

So, they wear a uniform and are clearly identifiable. They hang around in large groups annoying the whole neighbourhood. They are prone to abusive behaviour, vandalism and voilent crime. A search of almost any skanger will turn up drugs at any time. They don't contribute to society except as ex heroine addict guest speakers in schools.

Why the hell does the gov not just Clean this human excrement up? Its not like they are hard to find they are fookin everywhere!

Would you Support government legislation to crackdown on Skanger culture and behaviour?

For the record I am from poorer areas associated with skangerry , born and reared. I never stole a car or played hardhouse music at 2 am in an apartment block at ludacris volumes. I don't go around threatening to shoot people.

I make no connection between Skangers and poor people. I am a poor person.

    Calm down Mr. Bickle.

Exactly , dont get bogged down in thinking I was suggesting Nazi like tactics. No, I just mean that Antisocial behaviour is a huge problem in this country, especially the cities. Lets not pretend Skangers dont exist.

For me a skanger is a scumbag is an anti social menace. If they are caught commiting a crime and are already known for their record of antisocial behaviour then there should be Zero tolerance shown towards them.

They let skangers away with murder, yet you or I would be hit with the full force of the law for driving with out of date tax etc or not paying our toll bridge on time.

Everywhere else they're just called The Norm?!

In fact they've become so commonplace over the past 20yr since rave and hip hops inception that image really is the standard now. the look became majority over a decade ago. took to it like flies to ****e. obviously found their nich because it's the only image that hasn't changed after a few years. n still counting.. It won't change. even senior citizens dressed like a couple of 8yr olds out for a kickabout now. Anything else is "fashion" apparently. but when teens and adults are turned out like preteens we have our work cut out. and they will continue to be stereotyped on their appearance as having very little going on in their heads. preteens are exempt from this of course

Again, I should clarify: I'm not deliberately making a link between simply being poor and being a scumbag. I'm just saying that there are lots of scumbags in America some of which are driven by poverty. I just phrased it wrong.

But you dont actually mind this because when you call for "zero tolerance" (you do know what it actually means right ?) you mean for everyone dont you ?

Change "Skanger" to "Jew" or "Catholic" - does it still look funny ?

I have mornings when I get the papers wearing my tracksuit bottoms with t-shirt and I'm sure I fit the "profile". I have other mornings when I have the full suit and overcoat on. On one you'd hound me, on the next hand me your CV.

Zero tollerance = everyone who commits a crime should pay the price.

    I can get behind that.

it has less to do with poverty, more to do with culture. less a poverty of the pocket and more a poverty of mind. It projects a clampdown on thought and expression in a fascist fashion. the definitive anti-culture culture

I'm entirely in favour of a government crackdown on Catholicism, actually.
