Raw red onion in a salad or caramelised onion in the pan to go with a steak or something meaty.

    Abso-fookin-lutely

You know when you're at a soccer match and you just have a hankerin' for some curry chips from the horrible van. I put a nice dollop of the chopped onions (meant to be for burgers, i imagine) into the sauce - mmmmmm

it does get some strange looks

    Cooked - yes.
    Raw - NEVER.

Onions and garlic fried are the basis of every single trouser-wettingly good dish. I actually finished myself off thinking about that.

An image of slugs squirming around in mashed potatoes comes to mind.

I'm surprised so many people like them! I don't mind if they're used to flavour sauce but I couldn't eat one on its own.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,598 ✭✭✭✭prinz

Oh and the little roast to a crisp onion pieces ya get. I used to have to buy them on the continent but they are stocking them in Tesco now, Danish they are. Bloody gorgeous, sprinkled over anything. Add a bit of crunch to sandwiches, onto spuds, over a fry up, into a sauce, it's all good.

I used to wear an onion on my belt, it was the fashion at the time.

I'm a bit extreme but I really hate the feckers.
Dont like their smell but it's the texture that makes me gag. If I was to bite into even the smallest piece unsuspectingly I'm not sure I could stop myself from vomitting.
When I order Chinese (which I love) I have to make it clear that it should be onion free and I also check when the order arrives, if there are onions present I wont eat it and I go into a sulk for a couple of hours.
It's a real pain because it's a basic ingredient in most dishes I love, especial curries.
I wish I could like or even tolerate but I cant. Damn you God!!!:mad::mad::mad::mad:

    Raw - NEVER.

Trying to show off one time I ate a half onion raw like an apple. Served me right as I had stomach cramps for a full day afterwards. Gobsh*te.

You know you could just remove them from the curry if you don't like them. I mean there's no sense in putting a whole meal to waste when there's only one ingredient you don't like (the onions), which can be easily removed.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 22,080 ✭✭✭✭Big Nasty

Here's one for you - wrap an onion up in tin foil and feck it into the open fire for a good twenty minutes. Take it out with the fire tongs, let cool until you can touch it, remove foil and first layer or two of onion, chop in quarters or eighths, ad salt and butter and eat. Nyom, nyom, nyom! :)

Done that too many times but you cant always get the feckers plus it spoils the enjoyment of something I've been looking forward too.
I know it's a first world problem and a pretty specific one but I really really dislike the *****.

Heh. I could top that one - someone once told me of a guy that 'enjoyed' a bowl of onions and milk, as though it were a cereal. He's probably enjoying them in an asylum now.

Wait, wait! Ireland and Europe are in economic chaos, most of Ireland is unemployed and saving up every penny they have, Italy and Spain are about to get a bailout, all of Europe will soon default followed by the US, which will drive the first world into another Great Depression, and YOU'RE throwing away meals just because they contain onions!!

What is the world coming to?

If you don't like the onions, put them in a envelope and send them to Somalia. If you don't, you're a monster.

I don't mind them when they're chopped up nice and small and used to flavour food, especially a sauce. They give things a nice little kick of flavour.
But I hate just eating them, or big chunks of them, on their own. I remember having curry once in a friend's house as a kid. There were loads of onions in it, in huge pieces, which I wasn't used to at home. I very carefully avoided eating them (they seemed to make up about half the dish) until the end, when I mistook a huge chunk with lots of sauce on it for a piece of chicken. I gagged and tried to simultaneously avoid vomiting and hide my disgust.

I feel similarly about tomatoes. Great for adding flavour, especially to pasta dishes, and I love a good Italian tomato sauce, but eating a sizeable piece of raw tomato is just disgusting for me. Same with most mushrooms too.

i hate them, i cant eat any food if onions are in it

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,271 ✭✭✭annascott

I would use them as a base for a lot of dishes but always cooked and NEVER raw. I wear gloves when chopping them and also have a seperate chopping board. I am extra careful to ensure that nothing ever touches where raw onion has been.

While I would gladly ban raw onions. I really don't understand people eating raw onions when they are out or during a work lunch. Can't understand why they aren't embarassed that their breath smells of raw onions. Dam anti-social of them. I'll leave the horrors of garlic for the R&R page...

Onions, mixed peppers, sweetcorn, mayo and spicy chicken in a wrap... ****in' delicious! :p

I hate the feckers. I had a mad painful one on my foot a while ago....

Oh Sorry....I thought you said bunions !!

Lets put it this way. I made a shopping list last week with 5 dinners listed for the remainder of the week. When I started collating the ingredients needed I ended up writing down

10x 250g packs of Closed Cup Mushrooms
    3x Bags of Cooking Onions
2x Net of 3 big White Onions
1x Net of 3 Big Red Onions

I'd decided on all our Mushroom and Onion dinners in a row. (Feeding 7 People)

    We likes our Onions! :D

Eh, how could you make a mistake like that? I mean this thread clearly refers to 'onion', not 'bunions'. When was the last time anyone said 'onions' to refer to 'bunions'? Jeez.

As my name suggests -- Cheese & Onion.

Love onions with steak or raw red onions in a salad. They give flavour to a meal.
