After reading about them here, I ordered 3 pairs just over a week ago.
Got them on Wednesday morning. Very happy would be an understatement.
Quality is superb, better than my previous Hugo Boss frames imho.
I've a high prescription -5.75 in both eyes so I went for the 1.67 high index frame and also the anti glare coating even then the 3 pairs were cheaper than 1 pair without thin lenses in my bricks and mortar shop :)

Thanks to bargain alerts again for saving me A LOT of money :D

before i found out about zenni and goggles4u my average pair cost 100-150 euro, now it is around 25-35 and i can't see any difference :P

I spent 350 euro 3 years ago on a pair of glasses... received two pairs with 1.67 high index lenses (+5.75 and +6.00 prescription) and anti glare coating for 110 euro all in last Thursday, delighted with them!

and I thought I was the only one round here with a white stick:D

Getting eye test soon must get copy of my prescription, think I'm at the max end about 7.5 would that be right.

Question if anyone can help, where would be a good place to do an eye test in Dublin where they would give you a copy of your results?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,395 ✭✭✭danjo-xx

They have to give you a copy by law so I heard.

My daughter has high prescription (-8.25 ) and has a small face, so its very difficult to find frames in high street stores. I ordered two pairs from zenni for her with 1.74 lenses and anti glare. Both pairs were E100.00 and perfect. I went to get a quote picking the same non designer frames, lenses etc and for one pair was quoted E425.00 :eek:

I would recommend Zenni. Your optician has to give you a copy of your prescription, make sure your pupil distance ratio is on it (PD).

They tried to not give me a copy of my prescription because they were claiming for it on my PRSI, so I just paid for the test instead. Make sure to ask for your Pupil distance because they don't do it as standard.

Ordered a pair two days ago, I'm used to buying from goggles4u and waiting a few weeks for delivery, but from the OP it seems Zenni are a lot quicker? Will post back when they arrive.

Got John Lennonish ones, probably look tacky as ****e but for 18 euro or thereabouts, will do the job for hippy fancy dress if nothing else :P

Mine took two weeks but that was probably because my prescription is high... it says to allow extra time if your prescription is high. They are delivered by Fedex though so you can track them all the way from Singapore through Kazahkstan and France to Ireland

just ordered a pair, i'm -6.5 in both eyes and the pair I got cost me 50 euro all in with 1.67 & anti glare...

I was addicted to googles4u at one point but they seem to have gone seriously downhill in my opinion... i hate the way that they sell out of a frame and never get them back in... if they sell out they must be good sellers so why not restock them!!! /rant

Of course, but some people are not too used to the ways of a computer and all that. On the contrary to your point, if you put in the wrong url with the www and .com you will still end up at the deliberately fake website that tries to make money from you entering the wrong url for a popular site =)

    OK, fair enough.

tatranska, install this, Web Of Trust, everyone who uses it can give sites a rating so if you come across a bad one you give it a red rating to warn other users the site is/could be dodgy. It can be set up to stop dodgy ones from opening.

Works on most browsers. Firefox, explorer, chrome, safari, opera.

    Anyway, back on Topic......

guys can someone type up exactly what zenni need to know to get glasses made from them?
as in what figures from the eye tests results i havent a clue.

    thanks.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 23,862 ✭✭✭✭January

Your pupil distance, and the numbers on your prescription that correspond with your sph, cyl and axis in each eye. For instance mine goes something like:

    Pupil Distance: 58mm

    Right eye: SPH = +6.50, CYL = -3.00, AXIS = 12
    Left eye: SPH = +5.75, CYL = -3.75, AXIS = 160

If you go to Vision Express in Liffey Valley, you will get a great EyeTest but be prepared for a angry look and a bark which says "We dont normally give the pupil distance out!" from the large blondish yoke,

Yelp! Zenni Optical is amazing! My prescription is slight, but I still have to pay hundreds of dollars for a single pair of glasses at local optical center. While in Zenni, the free 1.57 lens can meet all the requirements. And I love their memory titanium frames which are quite durable and affordable. Totally satisfied!

Many thanks to you all for recommending Zenni. Decided to order a pair of varifocals, they have just arrived and are great - better than the ones that cost 4 times as much at Specsavers.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,506 ✭✭✭dowtchaboy

    I am impressed.
Ordered Nov 1st, delivered by FedEx from China today 9th.
Note they state "samples" on the documents - so maybe someone else could be caught for VAT/duty.

Quality seems good - time will tell. My Specsavers pairs have both lost screws or dropped lenses by now after less than 18 months.

These are light and fit well. I measured the width of an old pair I have that are very comfortable and made sure the Zenni ones were similar.

    Total cost was $46.80 - about €34.
That was for 2 x $15.95 frames of different styles, and one with extra reflection coating (4.95), plus shipping.

I got one set of reading glasses and one for computer work.
Zenni say the computer ones should use just half the "add" figure from the prescription and I think they are right.
I put a printed sheet with small text about 24 inches from my face and I could not read it without glasses (text too small) nor with the reading glasses (text larger but blurry) - with the "computer" glasses they were just right. I am looking forward to working on computer (laptop) screens with these - using ordinary "reading" glasses always seemed a bit "in your face"!

Reading a book with the "reading" glasses was excellent.

Note Zenni also recommend reducing the PD by 3mm when ordering purely reading glasses - seems we naturally scrunch our eyes a bit closer when reading books.

My only disappointment is that one of the sets is not quite as "cool" as I thought it would be - guess that's one advantage of being able to try on various frames in a shop.

All in all - very pleased. Thanks, OP.

I'm finally going to order glasses from them :)

I availed of the free eye test in specsavers today and got a copy of my prescription.

To get a pair of varifocals there would cost over 300€. Zeni will cost a third of that.

How have people who got varifocals found them?
Its my first time getting them. I was using reading glasses
    thanks

Just order 2 pairs of glasses from Zenni

The first is a pair of computer glasses with 1.57 index lenses(free) and finger print AR coat. cost $34
The second , a pair of varifocals with a 1.67 index lens. cost $105
Total price including postage was $148.

Specsavers wanted over €300 for 1 pair of varifocals

Now its a case of wait and see....no pun intended :D

I was thinking about a pair of goggles for Airsoft, does anyone know if any of their range is certified for that sort of thing? I'm probably gonna fire them off an email anyway, but no harm in asking here.

Do you have to pay customs duty on glasses bought from these guys seeing as they're coming from outside the EU?

I've never had to pay, most of the time my glasses are about €28 including delivery (3 pairs) so just about over the limit....

I have gotten more expensive ones though and not been stung either, in theory you do (as far as i know) but I've never had to.

Is there anyone who's bought glasses from both Zenni and Goggles4u and could comment on the difference in build quality (if any)?

I've had a good few pairs from G4u over the years but the last couple weren't great (the frames, I mean). Might try a change...

I have bought a few pairs from Goggles4you,I have always found the frames very light & break very easily,I would suggest having a look at this Irish Company Buy New Specs ,very reasonable prices, delivery in a few days, quality of frames & lenses far superior, keeps you updated on progress of order & is contactable by phone if the need be.I have no connection with this company but I am a very satisfied customer of them.:)

prices for basic frames and lenses seems ok, but i just received 3 pairs from zenni promotion for around 65 euro delivered so i doubt there is any chance for me buying more glasses untill 2014 ;)

How do you judge the sizing of the frame buying online?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 273 ✭✭meg3178

go onto you tube and look up zenni optical fitting and there's a few good videos showing you what to do and how to avoid choosing too wide frames. Also measure your frame width of the frames you already have.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 18,268 ✭✭✭✭uck51js9zml2yt

just got my order from zenni.:D
i got 2 pairs of glasses. one was distance with a 1.67 index. the other were reading with their free 1.57 index all for 90 euro.

its the same price as my local optician was looking for to supply me reading lenses with a 1.50 index and my supplying the frames.

Can I just ask those in the know ,can one go to an optician and get a eye test and walk out with just the prescription from that test,or are you obliged to purchase a pair of glasses from them.

They may not be happy about it, but they're legally obliged to give you your prescription after the test. They don't legally have to measure your pupil distance, but it's easy enough to do yourself if they won't do it for you.

I did this a week ago! Make sure you get the PD on your prescription they have to give it to you, I had to argue to get mine (Specsavers!) You don't have to buy anything!
