Seen them alright, 24 month contract for a start. I'll give it a miss after reading the T&C.

No support for torrents or peer to peer,if used will result in disconnection. Something about charging daily interest on late payments. I know for.some people it may be the only option coverage wise but the prices aren't great

D/load limits? How much for the 'upgrade' to nightsaver and what d/load limit is there on that?

Had another browse through, didn't see anything mentioning allowances, cost of night saver etc.you can email them on their website with any questions.

It said on night saver add on that there is unlimited bandwidth but theres probly an FUP

    1mB download/512kbps upload for €24.99

Compare that with UPC's 12mb download and 1.2mb upload for €25 euro even and you have got to be ****ting me.

Now that's a suprise. I wasn't expecting Niall Quinn to be the guy behind it all:)

    2.6.
The broadband service being offered does not support file sharing applications of any type. Neither does it support “peer to peer” operations. The use of “torrents” for the illegal downloading of copyrighted material is also not supported in any way. Any customer found to be using our service to perform illegal acts of this nature will have their broadband service cut off without notice.

Aside from this part of their T&Cs I am very keen to try their services. I wonder if the comments (above) are there to covers their backs and perhaps they don't really care; they can hardly say outright "go ahead and download copyrighted material."

An unfair comparison. UPC isn't providing a satellite service; if they were at that price then the comparison would be justifiable.

Terrible comparison, a person who could receive UPC would never look at this service. Satellite broadband is for many a last chance option for receiving broadband.

and even then it barely qualifies as broadband...

This of course should be in the midband forum where these questions belong

The money back guarentee seems very fair and straight forward. From what I can tell no other satellite company gives such a promise. All I have seen is a cooling off period providing the equipment hasn't been installed.
14 DAY NO QUIBBLE GUARANTEE. We have so much faith in our next generation state of the art satellite broadband. television and telephone service offering, that we are prepared to guarantee you, the purchaser, that if you are not entirely satisfied with the product up to 14 days of the signed installation date and you advise us of such, either by e mail or by registered post within the stipulated 14 days, we will remove the equipment from your premises and return your money to you in full.

Not looking as good as i first thought.

I spoke to a Q-Sat rep this morning and got the following info:

Download allowance is 2 gig pm regardless of package ..... but for €10 extra per month (for Nightsaver option) you can download to your heart's content between 11pm and 6am. They provide links to sites you can download movies from, so you can't simply use the likes of BTJUNKIE or any site they don't have an agreement with.

Use a wireless router for multiple PC? Yes.

How soon could they install? 4-6 weeks wait at the moment but they expect this to be less in time.

    That's basically it.

Wonder will it be better than mobile midband? Is contention ever a factor for satillite BB?

That's shooting themselves right there, if you never went near any other site except boards in the month you'd use 2gigs, crazy limit.

All sat packages are roughly the same...All the sat bandwidth is about the same as one small eircom exchange but it is shared among 1000's of subscribers so it can never deliver anything like basic broadband even if it is crap:)

The 2 gig a month allowance seems ridiculous in this day and age. They'll have to come up with something more generous if they wish to attract more business.

exactly - I live in the sticks. No P2P, no torrents, that means a no no for me, I don't have a TV and do watch Eurosport, BBC and sometimes P2P streams.

Does anyone know what the contention rate is? That is my main problem with my current provider eircom, between 5pm to 10pm i literally have NO internet at all; I live at the end of the line (the house next door has no service).

Thanks for all the advice peeps :D

Broadband is useless with a 2GB limit
And torrents banned, would it even be worth your while having this over dial up?

€199 installation aswell as €190 for the hardware, thats almost €400 before you've even started using it, are they for real?

Neighbour had the Digiweb's Tooway satellite service installed during the week and its unreal. Super fast (compared to 3G dongle) Two of us in the area seen it working and ordered it that day. As the 2 jobs are on the same road they gave us amount €25 off the install each.:)

Just to say that according to their rep on Facebook the installation and equipment is now down to €99.00.

    Here the full quote:

"We have just heard some great news - satellite Broadband is now available at an unbelievably low price of just €99 (Equipment and Install)
Monthly cost of just €39.99 per month for 6mb Broadband!

It is terrible. If they were to increase the limit to around 20 gigs a month I'd gladly use their services.

Incidentally, I suggested to the rep guy from Q Sat I spoke to last Saturday that they update their website with the information that they only allow 2 gigs download limit a month on all their packages, but the response was they’d look into it. So far nothing has been changed, which tells me they are not interested in being up front.

There are small rural exchanges in the wilds of Donegal with the approx capacity of the entire Tooway system on the biggest satellite Tooway use...and many times the capacity of smaller sats used by Tooway in the past.

There is no capacity for decent allowances. Any provider with a hidden 2GB limit is just a chancer, avoid like the plague.

Absolutely. The 2 gig allowance is beyond a joke in this day and age. And as bad as Eircom is - in my particular situation - they at least allow a confirmed 10 gig monthly download allowance; and have never once chased me down when I have gone over, and sometimes significantly so. In comparison the 2 gig monthly allowance by Q-Sat, regardless of which package is chosen, is but a pittance when compared to other such providers.

Now, it has to be mentioned again that they do offer a night-time 11pm to 6am unlimited monthly allowance for an additional €10 regardless of package. They say you can download movies all night long, as long as the movies are from specific links they provide. This might work, but what if the links they provide do not “stock” the movies you’re after?

I got talking to a rep also, installation is €99. For their Broadband Gold (8MB), TV and phone it's €85.95 per month. Better sticking with my VF 8MB package and Sky as it works out near €10 cheaper and I have a 300GB monthly allowance.

    T42 wrote: »
Tooway now offer triple allowance on all packages, so the 6/1 has 12gb, 8/2 has 24gb, etc.

I have the 8/2 installed with VOIP and it works very well.
If you are downloading large videos or movies, if you use it between 12.00am to 6.00am then you only use 50% of your allowance. If that doesn't suit, go to the movies I'd say.

It is not competing with ADSL, aimed at people with no service or poor service, rural areas, at last a real service for people that Waited for years, listened to broken promises. Doubt if the government or Eircom or UPC will ever reach rural Ireland. We can now work at home, reduce our costs, avoid those mad council rates and hopefully stay in business. All I can say this is the best thing I have purchased in the last 10 years.

QSAT seems to be limited to 2gb, which would be poor and the Hylas1 satellite has a capacity of 200,000 customers, so if it's to cater for all of Europe, this will be used up quickly.

Interesting comments. Thanks for making them.

My understanding is the triple allowance is only for the first few months, then things revert to normal.

The install and equipment price quoted by http://www.toowaysatellitebroadband.ie/purchase/
is almost twice the price of Digiweb's offer

I'm not sure why you'd sign up to pay more?

Installation was 250e, 12 month contract, I recommended 2 friends so I got 2 months free airtime. I know it was a bit costly to install, but after years of rubbish service I was happy to pay this if it worked ok, since I cancelled my landline with Eircom, this saved me 250e so the cost balanced out and I had 14days cooling off period, so as I still have it, it worked as I had hoped. One bill of 66.00e per month for BB and voice has helped big time.

Using your existing phoneline for voice calls or skype-type service?

Going by that, definitely Toowaysat.ie is the better option and the one I’d chose if deciding between the two. It is just a shame, however, the download allowance - from both providers mentioned - isn't yet comparable or even close to the likes of UPC, or even 3, who, for €29.99 a month advertise a generous 60 Gigs download a month! Granted they are not Satellite, and are not as readily available as companies that provide Tooway, but they are certainly an option in those areas where offered.

Rang vodafone to see if I could cancel my contract for the slow as feck mobile broadband and found out it was up anyway so I bit the bullet and ordered Q-Sat a few hours ago.

€99 up front for installation, then €59.95 per month for the Gold package (8mb down / 2mb up), sounds alright. Anything's gotta be better than that bloody mobile broadband

The only downside is I'll be waiting 4-6 weeks for installation thanks to the waiting list.

Poor Niall Quinn, he will never see a penny of his money again if he is fronting that lot. I hope he realises what he has gotten himself into.

The people behind those companies listed above were complete chancers who double charged their customers regularly and then shut down more or less every year as soon as they had the next phoenix company on the go leaving everybody out of pocket.

This time they seem to have burnt their bridges with Astra and gone to Hylas.....who won't see a penny of their money either given how this lot carry on.

Plenty of other threads on IrishIsptest and on Boards about the companies listed by Board Member. Grim and Grimmer the lot of them.

They haven't given me a date yet, but they'll be phoning me back tomorrow for bank details and such so I suppose they might have some sort of date or week in mind.

I don't mind the download limit to be honest, cause the only thing I download is music so it shouldn't be much of a problem. The lady who took the order did say though that if I found I had a lot of stuff to download one particular day, there was an option to buy an extra Gig off their site for €14.95.

I'm excited about it, tbh, cause the only broadband available to me was the Vodafone mobile broadband which was painfully slow. I'll be giving feedback anyway, what ever the result.

    Thanks for that.

When I called them last Friday I was told there was a 4-6 week wait for installation, but that things would speed up as they got busier, perhaps it means they'd employ more installers.

The €14.95 for an extra Gig a month seems particularly excessive, but perhaps you won't need it if you're a light user as you say.

Anyhow, good luck with that and please do keep us informed.

In reply to speeding up the waiting time for installation, she told me the same thing. She said that at the moment that was the time scale, but that they were trying to get to people as fast as possible.

There also seems to be quite an interest in the product as she told me that the reason she couldn't take my payment information was because of back logged calls and someone would have to get back to be tomorrow.

Hey guys, before I state this I must say I'm not an expert on the advanced internals of this company or of the services they are providing. I do however happen to be able to get into touch with a senior member of the sales department. I did so because the above information just didn't make sense.

As it stands there has, it would seem, been a monumental ***k up in the call center where I have been told false information has been given out, an issue which should be rectified shortly. I don't have an explanation for this. I do however have a revised list of bandwidth allowances for the various packages and it is as follows:

    2mb 2Gb
    4mb 3Gb
    6mb 4Gb
    8mb 5Gb

The 'nightsaver' option still stands, as does the option to purchase an extra Gb of bandwidth allowance.

    Hope this helps.

15Gbyte to 20Gbyte is a minimum useful broadband bandband package.

Most decent packages are 30G to 240G.

The fact is that satellite has horrifically high contention and low capacity (the entire capacity available to Ireland on ALL services added together is less than one fibre!) so caps are very low and tightly controlled.

Also can't have less than 650ms latency, typically 700ms to 900ms. Real Broadband is 8ms to 60ms latency!

Many applications won't even work on Satellite.

Satellite is for people with no alternative. It's the fault of policy of successive Governments, the Civil Service and Comreg that so many people (should be no more than about 450 total) have to consider it.

Thanks Sean for this much needed clarification. It is certainly much better than what I was told last Friday, but still, it is not great. Even the 5 Gig allowance would be soon used up with light users I know. If there was around 20 Gig for the top package it would be worth considering.

Do you know anything more about the 11pm to 6am deal, is it for example restricted to only those websites QSat direct you to. I am hoping this too was an error and if it was and customers could use whatever sites they felt comfortable with, then I would be very interested.

    Thanks in advance.
