By that stage only the night mail and some freight used the route

Everything got diverted through Portarlington in the 1970's

I just found these photos today on transportsceneireland on smugmug.

Are the NTA planning to redesign the IE branding once again? They were taken at Dublin Pearse in late August.

Why waste money on confusing "temporary signs"?

Why waste money on cluttered bilingual signage. By all means, keep the station nameboards bilingual - perhaps even using the old and more attractive Gaelic script - and keep important signage in English. I know it might hurt the feelings of some gaelgoirs but the majority of people in the country, including newcomers, understand basic English instruction

They are still roiling out new blue signs and now looking at new options. Remove the American language for a start. Green and Blue or just Blue looks best.

  • Registered Users Posts: 167 ✭✭Jem72

There needs to be some visual cue to enable you tell which language is which - italics for Irish is best since that's how road signs are done but the grey English text also works. If the English and Irish text are the same style, you waste time trying to figure out which version to use.

I don't understand why they have done this - none of the designs seem to even vaguely compliant with the TFI design guidelines. Admittedly, all of them are a more more readable than the bizarre colour choices in the TFI document but at least TFI are trying to bring an element of consistency into all public transport information design.

The evening/early morning you can get a clear run if your lucky, they addressed the issue at Fleet Street but probally cannot do it there without causing mass disruption.

Last Friday another line ticked off.
Back in the day, I would have been on the first tram, the pre-opening trial runs....not much of an enthusiast anymore. Still to do the WRC and Midleton! :D

That national railway museum in York is just unbelievable. Those A4s are my personal favourite steam locomotive. They have that instantly recognisable streamlining which makes them stand out and I just think they show power and one of them holds the record for a steam locomotive.

On this day in 1958 the Great Northern Railway ceased to be, ending over a century of private international railway operations, mainly between Dublin and Belfast. One of it's more curious corners was Belturbet, where a short branch of the line met the narrow gauge Cavan and Leitrim Railway. Branches like this soon fell by the wayside, with both the broad and narrow closing just six months later.

Here we see the last scheduled broad gauge service to leave the station on 31st March, 1959. The photo was taken by my uncle, apologies for the less that stellar quality of same.

GNR ceased to be private in 1953, when it was nationalised jointly by the two governments.

Some would be reluctant to describe cross-border operation as international, but even accepting this, it only was thus from 1922.

Otherwise, thank you for an excellent post.

I unexpectedly found myself in Thurles late this afternoon and photographed 22033 which had been earlier failed while working the 1400 Heuston - Cork. It was waiting to head back to Laois Traincare Depot. The 1725 Cork - Heuston was cancelled as a result.

can i just throw in a question here, whats up with the (imo) hideous dark green commuter type trains? saw one at grand canal dock. to me it seems like a very dated color

That livery was introduced a number of years ago. I don't think it looks too bad myself nice and simple livery if you ask me.

It's a horrible, relatively 'new' livery introduced a couple (?) of years ago which many in the railway enthusiast fraternity thought wonderful. It has just about everything wrong with it that it can. A proper green colour scheme can look the bee's knees but not this mess. Add in that they are noisy, uncomfortable and belching out fumes....aghh!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    20070513_2421_dromod.jpg

1950's CIE livery on a preserved carriage shows how a bit of thought can produce a pleasing result at no greater cost than the mess on the current commuter stock.

Below is a 1950s British DMU - look at the difference painting the roof another colour from the bodywork makes - not to mention an all over body colour with a little bit of lining.

    u-cl105.jpg

Given IE's record on liveries, we will probably have to wait until the commuter vehicles are relegated to permanent way use before they get a decent colour scheme.

    Evening folks,

Last weekend I visited Berlin, Warsaw and Prague with a group of friends for a weekend away. Of course there was plenty of time for pictures and we traveled from Berlin to Warsaw by the Warsaw Express and then onto Prague by the overnight Choplin sleeper train.

Pictures from Warsaw include a visit to the railway museum in the city.
