BBC AMERICA ORDERS FIRST ORIGINAL SCRIPTED SERIES FOR SUMMER 2012

Channel announces COPPER – A Cineflix Studios production, in association with Levinson/Fontana

New York, July 28, 2011 – In its most significant original programming commitment to date, BBC AMERICA has announced its first original scripted drama series, Copper. The 10 episode series, which centers on a young Irish cop operating in the immigrant communities of 19th century New York, is co-created by Tom Fontana (OZ, Homicide: Life on the Street, St. Elsewhere) and Will Rokos (Monster’s Ball, Southland). The executive producers include Fontana, Rokos, Barry Levinson (Good Morning, Vietnam, Rain Man, You Don’t Know Jack) and Christina Wayne (Broken Trail and executive in charge of Mad Men at AMC) of Cineflix Studios.

Copper is set in the Five Points Irish neighborhood of New York City in the 1860’s. The series focuses on a rugged young Irish cop who has to navigate the unruly and sometimes violent currents of his immigrant neighborhood, while simultaneously interacting with uptown Manhattan high society and the emerging black community in Harlem.

Copper will commence production in the fall of 2011 in Toronto and premiere on BBC AMERICA in Summer 2012.

Perry Simon, General Manager, BBC AMERICA says: “Copper is a great fit for BBC AMERICA, capturing the early American multicultural experience in provocative, ground-breaking fashion. In the spirit of great BBC drama it’s brimming with fascinating and complex characters giving us the opportunity to cast the best actors from both sides of the Atlantic. I’m delighted to be working with Tom and Barry again, together with Will, Christina and the talented team at Cineflix Studios. We could not be in better hands for BBC AMERICA’s first dramatic series”.

“BBC AMERICA is the ideal home for Copper in the U.S.,” said Glen Salzman, CEO, Cineflix. “Cineflix Studios has put together an amazing team for this series, some of the best in the business, who will produce compelling television with widespread international appeal. We look forward to starting production in a few months and continuing to ramp up our scripted programming slate.”

BBC AMERICA has a history of co-producing and acquiring acclaimed, award-winning drama. The channel recently announced Dramaville – a new weekly slot launching August 17, as a home to series such as The Hour and Luther, which recently scored an Emmy nomination for lead actor Idris Elba.

Irish actor Kevin Ryan has been cast in a major role in the BBC's new 19th century New York Irish police drama Copper.

The Hollywood Reporter, which broke the story, says that the series also stars Franka Potente (The Bourne Identity and The Bourne Supremacy) and Tom Weston-Jones (Spooks) and begins shooting this month in Toronto.

The trade daily says that Ryan will play Detective Francis Maguire, who works with Weston-Jones' character, Kevin Corcoran.
Created by Oscar winner Barry Levinson (Rain Man), Tom Fontana (Oz) and Will Rokos (Southland), Copper looks at the lives of Irish immigrants in Manhattan's Five Points neighbourhood in the 1860s, with Weston-Jones' character Corcoran trying to uncover the truth about his missing wife and dead daughter.

Copper will premiere on BBC America this summer and is the channel's first scripted series.

Dublin-born and Los Angeles-based Ryan's other credits include the upcoming thriller Tripping Tommy and the new series of RAW, in which he appears in episode four.

I think the above is a bit harsh ^^^

It's no award winner but it's decent

This weeks story was interesting about the two sisters and realy something that did happen a lot to vulnerable young girls

Acting is ok, nothing special about the music, the backgrounds and scenery are good, decent script

    5.5/10

I'll stick with this one for some more weeks

but we've seen this story so many times, certainly reminds you of sherlock holmes, we didn't know who anybody was, the guy with the eye, the posh paedo, somebody being hit with something distinguishable, zzzzz, didn't care, it was so decent to be just dull, dull, dull.

Overall I enjoyed the two episodes but the bit where he appeared behind the curtain after breaking his leg and being off his head on morphine was beyond ridiculous but I'm willing to let it slide this time seeing as I enoyed the rest of the show.

I honestly thought it was going to be a big hallucination scene. (Remember the madam gave her something to help her relax) She thinks Corky her Knight came to rescue her but then she snaps out of it and realises she's toast and the peado gets her.

I was hoping that girl got killed off anyway she was f annoying. Lying little bitch. Reckon she's gonna be a handful for the peado's wife.

I thought it had great characters and acting. Ok writing is a bit formulatic but who cares. I don't think eastern United States of that period has been done much it's always about the West

ok so watched the first 3 and the which ever ep the red head gets killed, then went to imdb to find out what happened in the end, from what i can gather this must be the most f'd up depressing joyless show ever, so it turns out his colleague cop, was having an affair with his wife while he was at war got her pregnant made her have abortion, she then went insane and pushed over and killed her kid!

all the while they act as pals, and we have paedo baiting annie continuing her tricks, god has they ever been a more depressing and joyless show, even sons of anarchy there's some fun to be had, but jax would have left the club had he been in coppers

This is getting a lot of advertising in Germany, every ad break on the Sky channels I see it. They are airing it on Sky Atlantic so they might end up doing the same in the UK/Ire?

Decided after seeing it for the 100th time that I would give it a go, I've watched the first two so far. It's nothing amazing but worth a watch! Good to know that there is another season coming as well.

Just watched the first episode, pretty good and it has an authentic enough Irish feeling to it, obviously shot on a set but it doesnt look too bad, no faker looking than "Boardwalk Empire" anyway.

Judging from the first episode, seems like this season we're going to be seeing more of Anastasia Griffith... if you know what I mean.

Decided to finly get started on this. Was one of those shows I meant to watch but there was always a sense that it wasn't going to last very long.

The first episode is a hodgepodge of every genre cliche imaginable. Corcoran is played like some hard boiled antihero and a real maverick whose constantly being told not to "be so clever". The writers seem to mistake hard bitten dialogue and machoism as a way if creating a deep and layered character but honestly it just feels like its been ripped out of the idiots guide to writing hard boiled pulp fiction.

The prostitution ring story was so old hat that the second we saw the villains we know he was the killer. There was no sense of mystery or intrigue to any of it. The implications of Corcoran's past and the baggage it entails doesn't fill me with awe. The cop with a past and emotional issues is so bland that it's hard to care about any of it. I'd love a cop who wasn't defined by either his job or his poor dead family.

Given how short the two series are and how much I love Oz, ill most likely watch this till the end. Hioefully the show will evolve into something more interesting than the sum of its parts as it really is full of potential.

Bah Humbug ... just watched both seasons of this over the last two weeks and while it took me a small while to get into it by midway through season 1 I was hooked . Enjoyed it and am now disappointed to see that it has been cancelled , oh well , I am sure it will be succeeded by some high quality reality TV show about people who are constipated or something .
