Emergency question - Super glue

Genuine emergency question.

Have a relative that has managed to let their kids get their fingers stuck with super glue.
(Thats kids for ya)

Besides going to the hospital - whats the best way of getting their fingers separated?

Something acetone like nail varnish remover or even that stuff for cleaning gloss paint out of paint brushes. If you have a Caredoc or similar service locally, maybe give them a ring??

My mom once mistook a bottle of superglue for her eyedrops!!! Not a good thing to do....

at they have accidentally glued two fingers together, or found that that small piece of balsa wood or plastic from a model they were building has completely bonded to their skin! Not to worry, for even though Super Glue is incredibly strong, it has one weakness: acetone.

Acetone is often found in household nail polish remover, and a small amount on the end of a Q-tip or cotton swab applied directly to the glue should dissolve the bond without damaging the skin. Be very cautious in gently peeling the skin apart as in removing a bandage from the skin; pulling the skin apart may rip the skin! Read the label to make sure that the remover actually contains acetone, as more and more manufacturers are turning away from the chemical because of the growing popularity of acrylic nails (which are loosened by acetone)

Skin
Immerse bonded areas in warm, soapy water. Peel or roll skin apart; a spatula or teaspoon handle or even a pencil will help. Remove cured adhesive with warm, soapy water (may take several applications). Fingernail polish remover with an acetone base has also been successful for removal of cured adhesive from skin.

tried superglue remover yet? Wild shot in the dark I know, but it does exactly what it says on the tin. If there is no shop open, don't panic, cos there has never been a case of a kid dying from having their fingies stuck for a night. Treat it like an adventure.:) edit, if you cant wait that long, use warm water and a blunt butter knife/spoon to gently prise them apart. Takes time but works. Don't panic anyway, my kids have done the same to each other, and superglue is not as super as they let on. It de-bonds fairly easily over a shortish time.

We (wife and I) was going to advise her to check with her neighbours - but as the woman lives in Hackney, London and she says its pretty dodgy (I assume at night more so - I don't know), she's afraid to venture out.

I have used Super-Glue-remover before a lot and it is brilliant, you buy it in hardware stores like B&Q.
Maybe there is a 24 hour place over there ?


Kids skin is very delicate so I would go to the hospital with them to be really honest.

Use Vaseline to rub the hardened glue off their fingers.

Petrol will actualy work(seriously) but vaseline is a safer alternative, one glue has dried.

Many thanks for all the quick replies. She is trying hot water and liquid/soap as also suggested. She is replying to us via messenger that it seems to be having an effect. Hopefully a fully successful one.

Others can knock AH - but by god ye guys are great when it come to times like this.

Dude could she not call an ambulance if all else fails? Then the ambulance could take them straight hospital without her being worried about the neighbourhood.

Yea, will suggest that if she's not fully successful. She, living on her own with three other young kids as well, so you see getting them all dressed and lugging them with her at this time of the night is not easy to say the least.

Put more superglue on and then when it drys u can peel the whole lot off together in one easy motion like a plaster!

For future reference, tell your sis in law to use a local cab company. They'd pop to the shop but it would cost her the taxi fare too

Ouch. I did this to myself twice, and my Dad, (a geologist), poured farmer's petrol and warm water and sand from the playpen over me (I had it all over my body) to get rid of it. I remember it literally peeling away as he poured. Hopefully a similar method might help your relatives.
