More sterling work MayoMick, could'nt make it down to Ballina today.:(

Cold enough but was expecting worse. At least the rain held off, pitch in great condition too. Good game today, good to see new players. Looked good and we could have a few more options for later in the year hopefully.

Lyons has pace to burn alright, he done alright today. Very unlucky to see his shot hit the post after a great run through the centre.
Patrick Durcan and Michael Hall also had good games at half back. Durcan could be a a useful addition to the panel. He's full of running.

Evan Regan done well again, got a couple of scores and had the beating of his man.
Mikey Sweeney and Alan Freeman caused the IT Sligo defence problems.
Donie Vaughan was solid in a unfamiliar full back role.
MOTM was Kevin McLoughin. He really is a superb player.

Also, good to see Davie Clarke back between the posts. Not that he had an awful lot for doing.

Still very raw alright and when things don't go for him (like in Connacht semi for Haunis) he can fade out of games. Heaps of potential though no more than Durcan who I was surprised didnt get a run out last year after the year he had with Castlebar at 7. Could be another Keegan in the making.

Fair play to ye all for making it out today. Serious commitment in a dirty day. Unfortunately college project work for tomorrow meant I couldn't make it to Ballina. First outing of the season for myself is normally gainst the Rossies anyhow:pac:

Very interesting choice for full back...chatting to a few lads today. We were all agreed that Donie has possibly the attributes to be a viable alternative to Ger Caff if the need arose....

Messed up paperwork meant Duffy couldn't tog. If thats sorted for the weekend I'd say he will get a run.

He must have been tried in every central position at this stage, he's like Mayo's Fellaini, only good!:P They should give him a run-out between the sticks, just for completion...

Maybe they're seriously looking at him for full-back, as a guy with more physical presence than Caff who can carry the ball out of defence. IMO they need to do this: shake things up, look at leftfield options, even in 'settled' positions...

Would all the paperwork not have been sorted last year? Horan would have had all above board before Duffy was added to the panel or am I presuming incorrectly?

The "paperwork malfunction" seemingly is from 15 years ago! I would have thought any paperwork would have been sorted, or at least if anything was amiss would have been done last year?

There was nearly a riot in the stand in Ballina when he didn't take to the field.

County Board have spoken on the Duffy paperwork issue:

So last year was a "bedding in" year for Duffy it seems. Still can't see him making it to the summer panel but stranger things have happened. Hopefully we will see him on Sunday

Where was the sense having retired rugby player on senior panel for year knowing he wasn't allowed to play while other lads bursting a gut make it onto to match day 24 but dropped off panel without given a chance.

Freeman seems to be enjoying the more direct approach that C&H prefer. For all that was good about the James Horan era by God were Mayo predictable - almost everything was run down the centre - get runners on the ball like Vaughan and Aidan O'Shea, men who are hard to stop at full tilt but none the less, very predictable and large parts of the game seemed to pass by talented passers like Dillon and Andy Moran.

Holmes liked to use Barry Moran at full forward, O'Connor is already an exceptional target man so you would presume that a more direct brand of football is on the cards for the new season. The tools are there.

Well that was a disappointing day at the office,Roscommon were worthy winners.Fair sharper, won the lion's share of the breaking ball at midfield and kicked a far greater percentage of scores from general play.

The game developed a very nasty undercurrent,Roscommon were extremely physical. The referee certainly did'nt help the situation, extremely poor performance.

Kenneth O Malley made a couple of very decent saves in the first half but his kickouts were very poor.

David Drake did'nt bring forth a great case for inclusion in the panel when it is inevitably cut.

Stephen Coen continues to impress in the centre, the Vaughan experiment continues at full back,he needs to hold back on those urges he has to join the attack.Other than that he's a solid option for consideration.

Up front was very underwhelming with little return from general play.Jason Doherty was our most effective attacker, most especially in the first half.I saw little of the lightning speed/promise of Morgan Lyons.

    I think we only scored 2 from play, 1 in 1st & 1 in 2nd?

One of the worst Mayo performances in MacHale park for a very long time. If the rossies had won by 10 points their could be little complaints. Mayo defence cut open time and time again O Malley kept Mayo in the game with a number of fine saves and you won't win many matches with just 0-2 from play.

Without stating the obvious big improvement needed from Mayo before the Kerry game on Feb 1st.

1st time Roscommon have beaten Mayo in McHale Park since 1986.
Very poor from Mayo to only score two from play.

Didn't deserve anything from that, poor performances all over the pitch.
Really wonder what Enda Varley brings to the panel, was slow to the ball, was overpowered on every ocassion and ended up on the ground time after time. Doc had a good game, his usual quite productive self. Coen will need time and needs to get a few games.
Midfield was poor, lacking any decision and no able to follow their men, again B Morans form has gone backwards.
Vaughan at the back will be interesting, presume he was instructed to follow his man up the field, I'd still stay with him on it.

Rossies looked much sharper and fitter and took some lovely scores.

Ref was a shocker, never had control or seemed interested in putting his foot down. Boiled over too many times.

some people were adamant he was suspended for first championship game despite it being in a different calendar year
so that most likely would have been against a galway team with games under their belt in Salthill!
