Should be an interesting year for the Butler Bulldogs. After coming off the worst shooting performance in championship game history, they tip off their season tonight against Evansville. Like any other contending division program they'll need to adjust quickly after losing two very good players. Shelvin Mack to the Wizards and Matt Howard to Greece but freshman Jackson Aldridge is supposed to be one to watch.

Edit: Butler loses to Evansville 80-77

Also some games coming up on ESPN America the next couple of days. I'd love to watch Harrison Barnes play and all today but it clashes with the 49ers game :(

Kentucky Beats Kansas 75-65 At Madison Square Garden

NEW YORK — Looking for his family soon after a loss, Tyshawn Taylor tried to keep things in perspective for this young Kansas team.

Tied at halftime, No. 2 Kentucky ran off 11 straight points in 3 1/2 minutes early in the second half to beat the 12th-ranked Jayhawks 75-65 on Tuesday night.

"It's only two games in," the senior guard from just over the river in New Jersey said philosophically. "It sucks to lose like this, especially when you're right there and you feel you can win the game. It's a learning experience. We're just going to build. We've still got a tough schedule."

Kansas was set to arrive home early Wednesday morning then leave for Maui two days later. Their first opponent there is Georgetown, and later matchups could include Duke, Memphis, Michigan and UCLA.

"It probably won't get tougher than the No. 2 team in the country," Taylor said. "We competed. We played good defense at times. We just didn't really take care of the ball how we wanted to and how we practiced."

Taylor scored 22 points to lead the Jayhawks (1-1), going 15 for 17 at the line but just 3 of 13 from the field. Thomas Robinson added 11 points and 12 rebounds before fouling out with 3:31 to go.

With the score tied at 30 a minute into the second half, the Wildcats quickly turned a close game into a laugher. Terrence Jones flashed a fierce stare right at a television camera following a thunderous dunk. Marquis Teague broke into a big grin after a 3-pointer from the left side, then added a floater to give Kentucky a 41-30 lead.

Doron Lamb scored 17 points, and Jones had 15 in a matchup between the two winningest programs in college basketball.

Anthony Davis added 14 points and seven blocks for the balanced Wildcats (2-0), an impressive winner at Madison Square Garden in the State Farm Champions Classic. Starting three highly touted freshmen, Kentucky gave John Calipari his first career win against Kansas, a school that brings up both fond and painful memories for the third-year Wildcats coach.

On almost any other night, a matchup between these two basketball blue bloods in the center of New York City would be the headline act. After all, the last time the two elite coaches squared off, Bill Self led Kansas to a comeback victory over Calipari and Memphis in the 2008 national title game.

But this one was overshadowed by the doubleheader opener, when Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski earned his record-setting 903rd career win with a 74-69 victory over Michigan State.

The Jayhawks held Kentucky to 38.5 percent shooting in the first half when they led by as many as seven points. But 10 Kansas turnovers helped the Wildcats stay in it. In the second half, Kentucky's mix of size and speed proved too much.

"Their best offense for a long period of time was our offense," Self said. "Our bad shots and turnovers led to run-outs and dunks and easy baskets that you're going to have a hard time defending. So I really think that we helped them, but they were also a lot better in the second half than the first half."

Calipari improved to 1-3 against Kansas, where he began his coaching career as a volunteer assistant in 1982. Calipari came out onto the court to lead his players away when there was a brief scuffle on the baseline with 6:11 left.

The Wildcats haven't won it all since 1998, but this year they boast an enviable mix of new talent and tournament experience that makes them a legitimate contender.

Kentucky owns the most wins in Division I with 2,054, while Kansas is second with 2,038. The Wildcats lead the series 20-6, but Kansas had won three in a row.

Long Beach State stuns No. 9 Pittsburgh 86-76
    AP Sports Writer
    By WILL GRAVES
PITTSBURGH (AP) Pittsburgh coach Jamie Dixon knew it would take time for his young team to grow up.

He just didn't expect the growing pains to be so, well, painful.

Long Beach State became just the second non-Big East team to win at the Petersen Events Center, stunning the ninth-ranked Panthers 86-76 on Wednesday night.

``We got beat every which way,'' Dixon said.

    Repeatedly.

Casper Ware scored a career-high 28 points, James Ennis added 19, and Larry Anderson had 12 points and seven assists for the 49ers (2-0), who emphatically ended Pitt's 58-game nonconference home winning streak.

``All teams, they try to do a lot to stop us from running, but we were just too fast today,'' Ware said. ``We were clicking on offense and it was too fast (for them) to stop us.''

Ashton Gibbs led the Panthers (2-1) with 20 points and Nasir Robinson added 19, but the Panthers simply couldn't keep up with the 49ers.

``''They wanted it more than us,'' Robinson said. ``They worked harder. They ran harder. They got to loose balls. They executed better than us. They outsmarted us.''

    Mostly, they outplayed the Panthers.

Long Beach State took a nine-point halftime lead and never let up.

Pitt drew within six points on a few occasions but each time the 49ers answered to become the first non-Big East team to beat the Panthers at home since Bucknell in 2005.

The victory was Long Beach State's first over a top-10 team since beating then-No. 1 Kansas on Jan. 25, 1993, when most of the current 49ers were in diapers.

    This was no fluke, however.

Long Beach State never trailed after taking the lead less than 8 minutes in, attacking Pitt from the opening tip. If Ware wasn't knocking down 3-pointers, he, Ennis and Anderson were splitting Pitt's zone and finding open teammates.

The 49ers shot 59 percent from the floor, collected 24 assists on 32 baskets and turned it over just 10 times, beating the Panthers both outside and inside.

``It's a big win but we expected to win this,'' Ware said. ``Everybody in the locker room knew we were going to win this game.''

Long Beach State went out and played like it, outscoring Pitt 25-5 on the break and 48-31 in the paint, even slightly out-rebounding the bigger, stronger defending Big East regular season champions.

Dixon has preached patience while his team searches for a new identity behind Gibbs, the Big East preseason player of the year.

The Panthers looked lethargic at times in a win over Rider on Sunday. Dixon stressed the need to get more tenacious on defense, a hallmark of the program since he replaced Ben Howland in 2003.

There's still plenty to work on. Long Beach State wasn't intimidated by the long cross-country trip, the late tipoff or one of the country's toughest places to play.

Pitt came in unbeaten in 80 home nonconference games in November and December at ``the Pete.''

Most of the wins have been laughers. When asked to answer the bell for the first time this season, the Panthers responded too late.

Pitt's best chance to get back in it came on back-to-back 3-pointers by Travon Woodall and Gibbs that pulled the Panthers to 62-56. The 49ers responded with a pull-up from Edis Dervisevic and a steal and dunk by Ennis, who flexed after flushing it to push the lead back to 10.

The Panthers crept within six twice more but couldn't get key stops.

``We knew they were very good and we wanted to play someone very good,'' Dixon said. ``They're an experienced team. I had anticipated us being a much better team this time and, obviously, we're not where I'd like us to be.''

The 49ers, by contrast, are right on schedule.

The game marked the start of a daunting stretch for the 49ers, who play at defending Mountain West champion San Diego State, No. 8 Louisville, No. 12 Kansas, No. 1 North Carolina and in Hawaii against No. 13 Xavier all before Christmas.

It's all part of coach Dan Monson's plan to have his team tested by the time Big West Conference play starts in January.

It's a method he worked expertly while at Gonzaga in the 1990s, putting the Washington school on the map with a series of deep NCAA tournament runs.

He has yet to get Long Beach State to the tournament, though he knows this is his best shot.

``I told `em the first meeting of the year that playing this schedule is unacceptable,'' he said. ``It's time for this team to stop playing the toughest schedule and start competing against the toughest schedule.''

The 49ers certainly looked ready for the challenge to come, racing to a 45-36 halftime lead by lulling the Panthers into playing the kind of up-tempo style that is out of place in leagues such as the Big East.

Long Beach ran, and ran, and then ran some more behind the speedy Ware. Beating Pitt down the floor with stunning regularity, the 49ers turned every Panther mistake into points at the other end of the floor.

Confidence grew with each basket and by the time the horn sounded all Pitt could do is trudge off the floor as the shouts of about two dozen Long Beach State supporters echoed throughout the quiet arena.

Sophomore Doron Lamb had 26 points and the Wildcats routed Penn State 85-47 in the Hall of Fame Tip-Off tournament in Connecticut.

Kyle Wiltjer added 19 points and Terrence Jones had 15 points, nine rebounds and five assists for Kentucky (3-0), which didn't put five players in double figures for the first time this season.

    They didn't need to.

"Anthony Davis' line, six rebounds, three points and three blocks, and it ain't close, he's the No. 1 pick in the NBA draft," Calipari said. "It doesn't matter. Just play because the next game he may go for 25. Today Doron went for 25. So it doesn't matter. Play."

    They did.

The Wildcats held Penn State without a field goal for more than 11 1/2 minutes during the first half, opening up a 34-point lead, and never looked back.

"We all believe in one another, and we play like it," Jones said. "No one cares who shoots the ball. We're just having fun."

Tim Frazier had 11 points, six rebounds and six assists to lead Penn State (3-1), which had opened the season with three wins.

The Nittany Lions shot 27 percent from the field, 16 percent in the first half.

The Wildcats, who struggled in the first half of their 75-65 win over No. 12 Kansas earlier in the week, had a much faster start on Saturday.

They opened the game in a full-court press and jumped out to a 16-5 lead, a run that included a four-point play when Michael Kidd-Gilchrist grabbed a missed free throw by Jones and then hit a 3-point shot from the corner.

It was 38-12 after three consecutive 3-pointers by Kentucky, one from Jones and two more by Lamb, part of a 14-0 run by the Wildcats.

"We had 12 turnovers at the half against (Kansas)," Calipari said. We competed with ourselves, we didn't compete against Kansas. Today, we passed to each other. We had 19 assists."

Lamb hit six of his first eight shots, and his driving layup pushed the lead to 30 points with just under 5 minutes left in the first half. At that point, he was outscoring Penn State 17-12.

"I think I played great," Lamb said. "Just like Coach said, my motor is getting better. I just wanted to come out and play hard and keep my motor going."

Frazier, who came in averaging almost 21 points and nine assists, hit a layup for Penn State with 11:34 left in the half. The Nittany Lions didn't get another field goal until Jon Graham tipped in his own missed dunk at the buzzer to make it 47-15 at the half.

Penn State, which started last season 4-0, opened this season with wins at home over Hartford, Radford and Long Island.

Penn State was 6 for 37 from the field in the first half, including 1 of 15 from behind the 3-point arc.

"My team is going to grow up," coach Patrick Chambers said. "We just got to keep tapping. We just have to use this as a learning experience."

Kentucky shot 53 percent from the floor. Penn State held its first three opponents to under 38 percent shooting and forced more than 18 turnovers per game. The Wildcats turned the ball over 10 times.

Kentucky, which has the most wins in Division I with 2,055, had never before played in the state of Connecticut.

This was just the fourth meeting between the two schools and Kentucky leads the series 3-1. Penn State won the previous meeting back in 2000.

The Nittany Lions are 1-10 all time against teams ranked second in the nation. Penn State's last win against a team ranked this high was a 65-63 victory over Michigan State in 2001.

Next up is Old Dominion which is currently in play, Kentucky lead by 2.

Watching a bit of Duke-Michigan, very exciting looking back-court for Duke with Seth Curry and Austin Rivers. Rivers is raw but has a devastating first step, can take you off the dribble or hit the outside shot. Curry (brother of Stephen) looks a very polished combo guard.

Trey Burke (freshman PG) also catching the eye for Michigan.

Favourite Wildcats player so far is freshman guard Nick Johnson (nephew of late great Dennis Johnson). He scored 19 points last night against New Mexico State.

NBA seems to have take the concentration off this. Kentucky gone 19-1 for the season so far.

Apologies I couldn't stick with this. Been very busy lately and the NBA has taken over whatever spare time I get to watch some ball.

I got the Kansas Jayhawks and they've been doing well this season. 16-3, a 16 game winning streak at home and a perfect 6-0 league record.

Thomas Robinson has been the main man so far, averaging 18 points and 12 rebounds a game. Tyshawn Taylor is right up there too.

Actually sat down to watch Kentucky vs Sth Carolina last night, it was men vs boys stuff.

However, Anthony Davis is being touted as a #1 draft pick this year and deservedly so, this kid is the real deal. Realisticly there could be 5 if not 6 UK players gone in the draft this year if they go deep in March.
