    Tonight @ 9pm, BBC1 NI.
They've been flogging the ad for this for a fortnight now, looks worth watching.

Check out the replica road hole bunker - I'd need a shovel to get a golf ball out of there!

I'd be playing back out of it!

That looks a lot deeper than the actual road hole bunker. Maybe it's just me.

Considereing it took me three attempts to get out of a far tamer bunker than that at St Margaret's today - I reckon I'd just pick the ball up ad put it in me pocket if I ended up in that Road Hole bunker :)

He really is a gentleman. A class act.

And his personal golf course is absolutely savage.

Really normal guy. I love his confidence in talking about the possibly of winning double digits majors. It makes a change from the carefully trained in media golfers who are afraid to say anything that may be misconstrued.

He's a world ahead of Tiger in Grace and Class.

My God, what a training facility he has in his back garden.

Breath of fresh air alright. Unbelievable setup with all the different types of greens, rough and sand.

Awful amateurish badly made program. It was like watching a poorly edited home movie.
If ‘Senna’, shows how great a sporting documentary can be – this useless pile of twaddle represents the other extreme of the scale.
The only interesting thing in the whole hour was that even the day after becoming a major champion he still had to ‘bitch-up’ and go kiss corporate ass at some cheesy function.

Ok I admit I did not watch the show , I only watched the 2 min clip about the back year on the BBC website.

But over the years I have noticed that BBC NI usually churn out 'folksee', 'colloquial' twaddle, so I am not suprised if this is the same, especially given the short time frame that is was made in.

I'm sure if BBC NI wanted and had the time to make a documentary of the alleged quality of 'Senna' (I have not see it either), then they could do so or commission someone to do so.

I know, but my point is why would one be surprised with 'twaddle' coming from a BBC NI production ?

Maybe you shouldn't be taking some dude from the Internets opinion. I watched it and I didn't think it was 'twaddle' whatever that word means.

I thought the low production value added to the programme and showed a real insight into behind the scenes for a pro.

Watch it and make your own mind up.

As lawman says watch it and make up your mind.

As for the troll saying Senna is how a sport documentary should be made do you think BBC NI have millions to throw away on a show about a golfer, who went the started making hadn't won any major

I guess for you a troll is someone who expresses an opinion you don’t agree with.
Maybe you should concentrate more on your grammar and less on the name calling.

No it wasn't that bad. I thought it quite a good documentary, made in a very short time span. Rory came across very well. Seems like a decent lad with his head well screwed on.

    Ok, pedantic pat

Trying to compare a multi-million pound sport's documentary to a BBC NI production is laughable. As I said, they started following him long before Augusta so I imagine their budget was not massive.

    +1

I think it was more a case of "we have all this footage, might as well put something together since he's just gone and won the US Open"!

Fair enough, the production team aren't going to win a BAFTA, but the fly-on-the-wall stuff made it intriguing.

His short game area is outrageous. Invest big, win big I guess.

You seem very quick to resort to name calling in your posts - you should ask yourself why this is - personally I don't think it's necessary in the context of expressing an alternative opinion.
As regards my problems with the documentary – I don’t think it’s acceptable to say ‘well they didn’t have millions to spend to it so it’s all right for it to be a bit rubbish’.
It may have made an interesting 20minute piece on his ‘Major Breakthrough’ but it seemed stretched out to me to fill an hour. Very boring in most parts and no sense of excitement conveyed. Could have been a lot better without spending extra money on it.

You seem to be only one who didn't enjoy it. I'm just taking you up on your point on Senna. That was a big budget documentary for a sporting legend. Maybe in 20 years if Rory has won numerous major's then maybe we might get something similar but golf and F1 are world's apart which is maybe why you enjoyed Senna more.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,338 ✭✭✭sunbabe08

i loved it. gotta say good timing by BBC NI :p that was my first thought when i saw February 2011.

btw sweet practice course in his back garden and the road hole bunker  mama mia

he's a classy kid alright, i look forward to watching more of him in the future. he obviously was in a state of shock afterwards. gained a lot more respect after he did the golf outing the following day. kudos. :D

i was gutted when i missed the sky sport special on Open, but i would have been more gutted if i missed this :(

And saying that McIlroy 'still had to ‘bitch-up’' isnt resorting to name calling? mmmm

That short game area is spectacular, and as always he came across as a guy with a great attitude to golf and life

Jesus I don't think you realize how much $$'s he gets for the ol "bitch up" kissing corporate ass.

It's easy take a production out of context and say it is below par.

It's comparison to "Senna" is also funny. As all the senna footage existed before the documentary was commissioned. Some skillful editing and a decent score was all that was needed to make that film great. Senna's story was already one of the most compelling story's of our time.

Anyway some poorly formed opinion you seem to have their.

Also dose anyone notice whenever Rory McIlroy is on TV things go a bit astray here.

Think of it more as a ‘descriptive turn of phrase’ – as I said it was the only interesting aspect of the program IMO as it showed the power that the money men have.
It’s hardly the same as personally attacking a poster.

Go on enlighten us? What would your angle haven been? Your approach? How would you have lead the viewer to be on the edge of their seat with excitement.

If your going to slag somethign off because you didn't like it the honourable thign to do would be to explain why you didn't like it then explain how you think it could be improved.

By "bit astray" I presume you mean someone posting something that doesn’t fit with the homogenous cozy consensus that seems to exist on here.
Apologies if the mere notion of not agreeing with your opinion has caused you to splutter you G&T over the keyboard in shock.
I’ll leave ye to it – I’m sure ye can fill up a few more pages going on about the practice facilities in his back garden and commenting on how he’s a really down to earth lad with his head screwed on.

enjoyed the programme very much last night, im surprised some have criticised bbc ni production here since rte never bothered doing a programme on rory or on graeme mcdowell last year

I actually liked it. Rory seems like a real nice guy.

His house is class and the practice facilities are amazing. Saying that he could surely afford to make his second greenkeeper fulltime.

He's got some lifestyle. Out of a jet into a cadillac police escort. Oh to have the money.

and i have no doubt is after buying mam and dad a couple nice things as well. seriously he's earned the right to buy the car and the house with the huge garden thats able to fit a decent size practice ground.

Ah I feel you can never begrudge sports people and money. Sometimes people don't realize the sacrifices sports people make to get as skillful as they do. Tiger Woods, Rory McIlroy down through the professional sports all the way down to our own local GAA stars. Rory has probably spent half his life hitting golf balls so if he wants to splash out on a nice car/house he might as well. Being as good as him is not a god giving talent, he worked hard for it.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,429 ✭✭✭Mr. Larson

He seems like a good kid, really enjoyed the programme as it got the viewer behind the scenes in his natural environment. Seems like family & friends are important to him, he seems to have learned some lessons, is willing to share it all with the public, he is determined to work harder than everyone else despite his obvious talent. Good kid with good attitude and good people around him, good on him. He can play a bit too.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 265 ✭✭Halfprice

thought it was very good myself. Is there anyone here that could say that if they had the money he had that they wouldnt have a lovely car, house etc... We all would and more.. His meltdown, how he handled it, and then the effort he puts in to get better and better.. He wins the open and then still heads off to play for his sponsors which wasnt a mad event or that and still had time to play with the kids, sign shirts, hats etc.. he just knows that he has to work harder and harder all the time. Really enjoyed it and look forward to more of him in the coming years. Compare him to the way Bubba waston melted down the other day in france... or how Tiger would think bad at signing etc.. Rory is like Mickhelson in a way... Likes to spend time with the people who support him all the time.. Great person and hope he keeps his style about him and doesnt change.

Personally I thought it was a good feature.

I thought that I had heard on BBC Newsline last week they were actually creating a documentary on NI Golfers following GMAC and Rory as they prepared for the Open next week. Instead Rory won the US Open and things had to be rejigged a bit to produce a special.

    .......I think.....

Thoroughly enjoyable. Even my better half enjoyed it and she doesn't play.

But we only enjoyed it so we could contribute to the ongoing cozy consensus on boards.ie. In reality we don't have valid individual opinions on the programme.

McIlroy is so well-trained and well-spoken in front of the camera,he seemed to come across as totally non-emotional and repetitive at times on last night's show.
I'm a big fan of his as a golfer, but I'm disappointed to see he's seems to be another mass-media made package.
Obviously he's very ambitious and driven and hopefully he does go on to achieve greater things,I just found him a bit stale and mundane.
Hoping it was heavily edited and he really is a bit more excitable and flambouyant in real life.

It's something that unfortunately comes with the fame. I'm sure as a professional sportsman it'd be part of the management company package to be trained in the do's and do not's of the media. Very hard to open up and not be a robot when every word you say is scrutinised. For example... Rory was sleeping in the car during the documentary while not wearing a seatbelt. You know there are people out there who would ring the BBC and complain that sort of thing. Sad sad b•••••d's
