30gr 6's are good to 30/40 yards, think ill leave the clay rounds for clays because they are crap unless up close

I always used Remington 6s or the Old Winchester 6s when I only had a shotty.

I still think it's hard to beat a 6 as an all rounder

They are great on running rabbits

ya the 30 gram 6's would probaly be the best. really though i wouldn't get too worked up about it because if your accurate enough, you'll drop them with any shot unless they're really far away. Also the lighter the cartridge the greater spread it has

Yup, a good shot is a good shot. Although the only way to be sure of the pattern is to do a pattern test, you'd be suprised. I had 36 grams that didn't pattern as well as 32 grams, they were differant brands though

Brands vary, I said I pay between €6 and 10 a box of shells.
I shoot Remington and Eley only as they run better in my shotty.

I normally buy a couple of hundred and it does me a long time
Niall Lynch is who I buy off :p

I have paid €25+ a box for copper coated shells for birds I intend eating

If your licence says 100 and you buy that amount and then in into the shop down the road and buy 100 and you get caught you will NEVER own a gun in Ireland again! Stick to what you can get legally cos it aint worth the risk... I don't know if this is your first licence, but when you renew it,you can up your quota. Shooting is one of the most enjoyable things you will ever do,don't fück it up by trying to save yourself a couple of extra trips to the gun shop to buy ammo when the going is good. Happy hunting:)

Thanks for the heads up lads I didn't know about uping the quota I'll do that next time thanks

My license says the same which is kind of stupid considering if your clay shooting for a day you'd more than likely need more than a hundred cartridges. Id like to buy my game cartridges by the slab because it works out cheaper.

trying get 100 .22lr round on your licence and trying for weeks to get it increased to no avail.
my local fo even gave a mate 100 pellets for his air rifle, makes you wonder

I usually use a variety of shells, but my two most popular ones are 32g 6's (Eley) and 36g 5's. Cost €72 per 250 and €88 per 250.

    There are preset guidelines (in the commissioner's guidelines) as to what they deem enough depending on the activity. They are;

    • Farmer (one shotgun for vermin/pest control) – 100 rounds.
    • Deer Gun – 200 to 260 rounds.
    • Shotgun for clay pigeon, pheasant/pigeon/woodcock – 500 to 750 rounds.
    • Target Shooter (member of authorised club) – 750 to 1,000 rounds.
Again these are only guidelines and are not an entitlement, but i would argue for more as your license covers you for only the amount on it including all rounds on you, your car, home, anywhere. Its the maximum you can have at any one time. And the other silly bit being a fired round is still classed as a round so dispose of your empties regularly.
