It looks like ill be getting permission on two farms to shoot deer, theres 11 on one and 8 on the other all sika. So im looking into getting a rifle. I will only be shooting between 3-5 deer a year so dont need anything special.
I will be selling my .22 till i upgrade security, and should get around 300 for it. my budget will be aronud 500 for just the rifle.
So does anyone know of something suitable in 6.5 or .308

doubt it yal get anything new for that price
but i got my savagg accu trigger .243 or 550 i think second hand from paul haloran

you should get a CZ550 .308 for that. Is it just the rifle or do you need a scope, mounts, etc?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,096 ✭✭✭bunny shooter

I know it might not be what you want BUT you should get a decent Lee Enfield .303 for that kind of money and a scope mount would cost ya in the region of €50. A few dealers, Duffys in Galway have/had hunting ammo in .303 and you can even enter Classic rifle shoots with it too

If you were interested in this route give JK in Fingal Sports a shout

i know agun dealer in mayo who was selling a brand new marlin .308 for three hundred euro it was an extremely light rifle though, would be very severe on shoulder.

+1 on Fingal sports john will find you something cheap in .243 and privi ammo @ €15ish a box and you'll be flying it!

its just the rifle i need ill sort mounts when i get it, but if there with it then well and good.
Whats the story with importing from the uk, would it cost me much? i see a lot of parker-hale and midland gun co. in 308 and 243 for little money

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,034 ✭✭✭✭It wasn't me!

The Parker Hales are quite nice. Shipping here can cost a decent chunk. For the money you're talking about, I wouldn't bother. There are enough of them around here anyway. I'd go for a CZ550 in the budget you're talking about or something similar. No mod, fixed power scope and you're away.

i have a .25 cal pred 8 mod that i could get a different cal insert for and swop it from my .223 and back.

anyone know a dealer that regularly has secondhand deer rifles

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,898 ✭✭✭poulo6.5

Any dealer worth his salt will have a few second hand rifles in stock. Try Mick dougan in killerney he has a good few rifles in stock. Or Paul halleron in Dangon or Sean in atlantick shooting and fishing in Carlow or Sean in steaklums thurles.

I chose .308 for a good range of ammo from cheap plinking and target ammo to expensive hunting and everything in-between.

But any cal you choose will do the job for you on our deer here in Ireland no need for big magnums or anything.
If you want to experience a .308 let me know and we can go for a shot when the season comes in. There is always room for a lad willing to carry a deer down a hill

Try John Lambert in Camolin in Wexford,he has alot of second hand stalking calibers, you should get something half decent for 500 bucks.

I think landers in tralee has ceased trading in firearms but all that is there is stuff that has be collected by people waiting for licences to the best of my knowledge. i deal with mike duggan myself in killarney and here is his no: 0872616185 and i know you have a budget €500 but if you put a few quid more with it i gaurantee ya you get a good decent rifle. Was down this road cheap and cheerful and went away got something good and expensive and havent looked back to be honest.

The first thing you need to do is get a deer licence, go into your nearet gun dealer and get a serial no and caliber for a rifle to put on the NWPS application form and submit it. Once you get your deer licence you can apply for the gun. I was in the same boat as you last year and just kept calling in to my local dealers, eventually I found a decent enough gun for the kind of money i had available but my deer licence to ages to come throguh but the gun licence only took two weeks!!

IMO Privi is grand ammo for plinking and practice but not at all suitable for kill shots on deer, they wont do the necessary damage to bring down the deer unless they hit something hard i.e bone............ This will lead to runs- unretreivable kills - and unnecessary suffering........ why do u think they can be sold for 15euro? cc30 ( + 1 on john - sound)

    Same gun.

As i said on another thread its a grand cheap rifle, but it is ULTRA light. Too light actually. The barrel is so thin that the gunsmith i seen it in said threading it is a "challenge". I could hold the rifle extended out with one hand and it was effortless.

Not saying not to consider it, but i would look at something with a little more "body". Your shoulder will thank you for it.

i actually thought about buying it,but there wouldn't be much fun in havin to ice your shoulder after every stalk.the stock seemed very flimsy on it too.i read a review on some american site and the reckoned the cussioned pad was very good for recoil

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 28,697 Mod ✭✭✭✭Cass

It would want to be as its going to get the full effect of the shot. I'd sooner have a heavier rifle.

    jay'us its only a 308:rolleyes:

Recoil is only a small part of the obvious problems.

The barrel is not fully floated. The barrel itself is stupidly thin. The stock is like something made from left over plastic. Its flimsy and cheap both in looks and feel.

All in all the price reflects the quality.

There were loads of zastava rifles on dealers shelves a few years ago , they were cheap , less then €500 and looked good , just a bit plain, there were also loads of lee enfields converted to sporters by churchills or cogswell and harrison or someone like that , they were less then €250 as far as i can remember and i don't see why they wouldn't drop deer all day long.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,777 ✭✭✭meathstevie

Zastava actually made fairly good yokes. Back in the day the Yugoslavian AK's were among the best circulating in the Warsaw pact countries and guess who made a lot of them.

You are Way off the mark on that!
PRVI are a Lead-tipped soft nosed Hunting round.
I have taken medium sized deer, medium/Very large goats and foxes all using PRVI ammunition. On all it caused devasting damage...

HunterPajero on this site can testify how PRVI can drop deer.

I wasn't even aware there was any debate on the effectiveness of this round? The expansion of the round is Very impressive... The only thing I noticed was the odd hot-round wich caused the POI to shift a little higher.

Relaying info and advice as provided by the distributor - 'Fingal Sports'
What i can testify to is fliers and their POI inconsistancy @ 100m in 100g..........................I personaly am happy to spend the extra for a proven quality round for my 1-2 deer killshots per year.

Some people get very good results. But I agree they throw the odd flier- mainly on the vertical axis as there seems to be the odd hot load. But there is no doubting their hunting capabilities. I am changing from them myself... But my mind was not put off by their killing power!
