Call the station and ask for the Immigration officer, they'll take details off you and take it from there.

It's worth noting that the GNIB would be likely to do very little in this case as this person would be one of many. A huge proportion of the Chinese population would be here on student visas which allow them work 20 hours per week. Most work full time and there are a large amount of them that have opened chinese restaurants even though they are not permitted to do so. I'm sure this person is overstaying because he/she cannot renew on student visa as they have been here over 3 years on student visa.

On a more positive note, these businesses are contributing to the economy through taxes, purchasing raw materials, etc. It would be likely that if they were caught, they'll just leave the State, leaving more unemployed and less money flowing through our economy. I'm not condoning this person breaching the terms of their visa but it is an unfortunate fact that it is probably better financially for the state to turn a blind eye otherwise most chinese takeaways / restaurants would have to close. The Chinese population in general do not have access to social welfare as they often have no status in the State or only student visa status so they are (in general) not a direct burden on the State.

Hate to break it to you, but they (GNIB) already fingerprint us (legal) immigrants. I've been legal here in Ireland since 2000, in 2006/7 they started fingerprinting us whenever we went to renew visa's etc.

I don't see a problem with it, they need to keep track and this is one way they do it.

That's not correct. It most likely will be followed up.

As for your example of restaurant owners. What makes you think they pay tax when they refuse to register themselves properly? Generally the illegals work out of sight in the kitchen and cannot pay tax or are paid illegally low rates. Once caught they are often given time to get their stuff in order and often end up being registered properly meaning that they get paid properly and pay tax.

I stand corrected. I was definitely under the impression that it was ONLY asylum seekers that got fingerprinted. Everyone else they kept track of via passport. Seems excessive to me.

I've seen these things reported before and not investigated. I presume it's because of the sheer numbers of persons involved and the fact that many people often would have a mistaken belief that a particular individual is an illegal immigrant. people may overstay their visa but may have another application in being. It's not a criminal offence to be in the State without a visa or permission so the options for the Gardaí are to notify the INIS who then issue a Notice of intention to deport, which generally takes time (although they will require strict reporting requirements on the individuals).

When referring to tax and revenue generated, I was referring to the restaurant owners and revenue generated from the business, although I agree that very often there is a problem with staff wages and cash in hand payments and that is a loss of revenue to the State.

This is a good question but, here in Ireland there a lot of people who forgot about the law.
First of all I`m not agree with the rules when you go to make a new PPS number - there is to small querries to make such an important document. (only a bill or something to proof the adress and the ID or passport of the person who wants that PPS) .
There is also , a lot of people who work on fake documents (passport,etc) ... they sad it`s only for work . I think in Ireland should change a lot of things . When you want to hire someone, after my oppinion is not enough to prove only a paper of your name (i mean for that people who are not irish citizen) because if they have an fake document as a pasport they don`t have a birth certificate or driving license to prove .

I would like to report someone I know. Its not knives in the back. This person has been sponging off the State for nigh on 10 years now. Never worked legally or illegally, hates Ireland and finds Irish people dumb. Especially the immigrations officials, he thinks that a extra stupid for letting him back in to the country after been deported 5 years ago. He was served with a new deportation order some time ago but has absconded and is living with a friend. The friend knows he is illegal here too. I would like to do my duty and report this person but once that happens he will know that I did it. If the proper authorities do not take action against him and actually deport him immediatly, he will come after me. He is a drug addict and alcoholic and has a history of violent behavior. Cant I get a guarantee in this country that my report will be takes seriously and that necessary action will be done?
Just for the record, I am not a racist, I have many foriegn friends, good honest law abiding people but when I see how this person just flaunts the law every day it just make my blood boil. I have had to work 60 hours a week for the last 25 years just to make ends meet and this person gets everything for nothing. Its just not fair.

How would anyone know you reported him?

Go to the GNIB and tell them you have information about the whereabouts of a person against whom a deportation order has been made but you cannot disclose it for fear of reprisal. If they can't deal with that appropriately, write to the dept of justice and failing that, the minister.

Yes, unfortunately some people use false information to get welfare. Sometimes this false information is issued by their home government and is therefore "official" for all intents and purposes, so it can cause immigration officials and the DSP real problems.

For starters they are Always tapping off the electricity illegally, every address they were at they did it until the landlord sussed them. The have false documents to get whatever they want. They use them for to get a driving licence, etc. A friend of his is self-employed, advertises all around the place and never paid a penny tax in his life.
