The Tara serves all the usual like roast dinners etc. traditional enough but very tasty and good value. Their gravy is to die for.

There's Mitchel House as well, only been there once but the food was really nice.

The Shimla Indian resteraunt is good too.

    Hi Sigma,

The Tara appeared to be closed. Went to Mitchell House and had a lovely meal there. Early Bird Menu. Lovely place to eat. Thanks for the recommendations. Just as well you gave some extra ones besides The Tara:)

I'd say Mitchel House is one of the best restaurants in Thurles! The food is to die for. You get a really great early bird menu. Usually all you'd get on an early bird menu in a restaurant in Thurles is the usual 'turkey and ham' or beef and spuds etc, just regular meals. However, Mitchel House go all out! Fabulous restaurant.

Depends on what you are after - there is a little place in the homevalu hardware store, in by the ford dealership, on the Nenagh road that I have poped into a few times. Wraps baps that kinda stuff nice cakes and gateau but for me if on the road they do lovely coffee.
The last time I was in they seemed to know most customers names - often a good sign that have a lot of regulars which often indicates a nice place

Sous le Vent does very nice food.

I'm not sure that it's an open all day venue though.

Been a few years since I ate there and it's definitely on the list for a return visit.

And, no, it's not open during the day, or even every day.

Times are Tue-Sat, 5.30-9 (Sun - bank hol weekends only).

Maybe because today is Monday, and the poster above says it only opens Tuesday to Saturday?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 987 ✭✭✭mikep

Nope...has been reported closed for a while now, a few people have found it closed on different days...

I dunno if I'll be able to eat there when the new owners take over. I'm gonna miss Brendan and Marcus lol

The Shimla Indian resteraunt is good too.

The food in Stars of Indian is much better in my opinion, have you tried them?
All the Chinese restaurants in Thurles are awful :(

It was an excellent eatery I have to say.

I'll be happy to keep putting business the way of the new owners if they can maintain the standards.
I always try my best to support local business if I can.

Will be visiting Thurles soon. Shame all the Chinese are so bad as a poster mentioned as hubby loves his asian food, no chance of a Thai restaurant I suppose?

Might be staying in the Anner unless someone can recommend something better?

What is the Anner like for evening dinner?

So far it looks like Mitchells is the best yea?

    Thanks all:)

Well like I said Stars of India is really good for Indian so perfect if he likes asian food. It's across the road from the GAA shop on Slievenamon Road. If you wanted to drive 10 minutes outside the town to Holycross I have heard there are some good places to eat out there. Nice area to visit too.

I have only been in the function room in the Anner Hotel. It's not a nice place at all but there is no other option for hotels in the area(Won't even go into why Hayes Hotel should be avoided.) There are probably some good B&B's that might would out better for you.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 202 ✭✭Puzzle35

Thanks Tuxy. I love indian but he doesn't like hot food so refuses to try it.

    The Anner it is so:)

Do the same people not own all the hotes in Thurles............I think I read that somewhere today.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,228 ✭✭✭mrsbyrne

Parkers in Holycross getting rave reviews and fantastic value at the moment. Ate in Mitchel House week before last, gorgeous. Ate in the Four Seas Chinese last week also gorgeous. Heard a very lukewarm report from the Horse and Jockey at the weekend, service in particular, shocking. Service in the Monks pub just as shocking. Anner Hotel dining room only so-so (think Fawltey Towers including Manuel Basil and the old gentleman). The food in the bar (wraps, toasted sandwiches, chips, salad, steak sandwich etc. ) much better and good value. The Anner Hotel itself is under the care of NAMA.Its best days are over for the time being.

That's a shame there are many Indian dishs that are not hot.
Yes same owners for the Anner and Hayes. There is a busy Nite club in Hayes on the weekend and you defiantly do not want to be there if you hope to get any sleep.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 987 ✭✭✭mikep

    Hi Puzzle35

    I wouldn't go near the Anner...ever.....

I think Four Seas chinese is a very good, I particularly like the lamb schezuan (sitr fried lamb slivers in spicy sauce...I go for extra chilli!!:D)
They also do lots of milder stuff..

I think Shimla is the better of the 2 indian places, and thier chicken garlic bhuna is mild and delicious...

All this talk is making me hungry and its only 8.30....

We have recomended the hourse and jockey to stay but not to eat...as mentioned the service in the restaurant/bar is terrible, however the hotel has only gotten positive reviews form those who have stayed there...they also have an elemis spa, which my wife says is good...

    Hey Guys,

Thanks a million for all the recomendations. We will probably try the Four Seas for Dinner as we both like Chinese. Is the meat good quality, as in is the fillet of Beef really fillet? Any dish we should avoid?

Would stay in horse and Jockey but that would limit us to driving into Thurles for dinner and back out there for a few drinks afterwards. We might just have to take our chances with the Anner so we can walk back after :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 987 ✭✭✭mikep

As I mentioned previously the lamb is good, I think the fillet beef is also nice...(amber fire fillet steak is lovely) They do this stuff called chicken japenese style, (I think) which is also lovely and not spicy, lots of chicken and mushrooms in a soy based sauce....yum!

    Enjoy!

Four seas is nice, but as one poster said there are no nice Chinese's in Thurles, i have to say i LOVE Kambo's over Kickeys pub. They are really friendly in their and the food is so tasty. Each to their own tho i suppose!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,357 ✭✭✭jprboy

Passed what was formerly Sous le Vent earlier today and there was some work going on with new paintwork and signage over the front. All I was able to see while passing was the word "Restaurant" and a phone no. Any update on re-opening plans?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,357 ✭✭✭jprboy

    ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
Restaurant named New St seems to have opened in the last few days where Sous le Vent used to be. Anyone been yet?

Havent been yet but a few people I work with have been and said that they are refusing to honour SLV vouchers.

I walked past it this morning....

It's no replacement for SLV as it is a sambo type place that is only open 'till 5.

Looks like we are heading back to the old days of only the chinese/indian option for eating out.

Must give Mitchell Hse another go...

You claimed earlier on this thread that all SLV vouchers would be honoured by the new owners?

Kambo's isn't great food wise. But the staff are good and friendly, bonus points for them going to the pub for you and bringing up drinks :)
Food is average to below average, but the service is good.

I'd be a fan of their food. Love their Duck, sweet and sour chicken, bbq ribs and agree with ya that you can't beat having a few pints with your dinner if your on a night out.

I used to like Kambo about 2 years ago but have found their chicken to be of poor quality recently. But as said the staff are really friendly.

I spoke to Tom (the new proprietor) and the condensed version of the story re the vouchers is as follows .....

While negotiations were ongoing Tom was told by Brendan that they (he and Marcus) had 2 bank accounts, one for the normal stuff and one for the vouchers.

Brendan said the voucher money would be transferred over to the new owners, hence the promises that the vouchers would be honoured.

The money was never handed over and in fact the second bank account never even existed.

And another plus for any of you heading in there you will be pleased to hear that the kitchen is now spotless and all the broken equipment has been fixed.

    :)

    thanks for the update.

Personally I don't a give a flying fig who is responsible.

If the new owner refuses to honour the SLV vouchers that his decision.
He will not get any business from me going forward.
(and I put a considerable amount of business SLV's way).

Also I hope the previous owners don't cross my path in the future:mad:

That doesn't make any sense to me.

The previous owner lied to you, took your voucher money even though he knew he was closing and then fu(ked off with your money in his pocket and you blame the new owner?

Maybe I'm missing something here and perhaps you can explain .....

    :)

Apparently old owners also left a local butcher with a substantial bill unpaid....

Seems to fit with the voucher issue....

    It's quite simple.

When the new owner was buying the existing business, the asking price for the business would have been determined by how much turnover the business had, how much the business owed (creditors = suppliers, voucher holders etc)
and how much the business was owed (credit extended to customers etc).

The values of what was owed by the business would have been factored in to whatever selling price was agreed with the new owner.
The new owner bought the business factoring in what was owed by the previous owner to existing customers.

or else he's been ripped off too : which doesn't augur well:rolleyes:(and that's being charitable).

The country is full of people with vouchers for businesses that no longer exist. Vouchers for any business were always very vulnerable in that they have no standing in law. The previous proprieter of this business sold you a voucher and now its useless. I would draw a line under it and give the new proprieter a chance to bulid their business. Bitterness and vindictive sniping will achieve nothing.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 586 ✭✭✭jonnybravo

I'd imagine the new owner didn't buy the old business but is just renting the premises after the other one closed so they wouldn't have any obligation to the old business but I could be wrong.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 371 ✭✭Cerbera

There's more to this than can, or will, be posted on here.

Basically the previous proprietor got your money, took it and ran.

    Face it, he screwed you.
