Worst refereeing decision you've ever seen?

First off lets not mention The Henry incident because it's too obvious and I'd imagine most posters are sick of hearing about it.

The worst decision I've seen this season was in the St Johnstone vs Celtic game where Michael Duberry clearly handled the ball inside the box, looked at the referee MR. Ian Brines who did nothing. Unbelievable stuff.

    paranoid.jpg

Trying to select the worst of all time is more difficult. We've all seen some howlers down through the years. I don't know why but the Man United vs Tottenham game from a few years back springs to mind. Pedro Mendes goal from the halfway line should have won the game for Spurs. Unbelievable how the referee and linesman missed it.

An honourary mention to Graham Poll who managed to hand out three yellow cards to one player in the Australia vs Croatia game at the 2006 World Cup.

On a bias note it'd have to be the Luis Garcia goal in the CL semis in 2005, or any of Ovrebo's 6 or so decisions in the 2009 semis. Stuart Attwell's ghost goal in the Watford - Reading game a couple of years ago comes to mind.

Chelsea v Barca semi final, two or three years back.

IIRC If the goal wasn't given then wouldn't it have been a straight red and a penalty?

    http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/football/2364256/Collina-denies-Everton-at-the-death.html

Everton’s 4th place finish in 2005 looked to be in vain when they lost the first leg of their Champions League qualifier against Villareal 2-1 at Goodison Park. In the return game in Spain, Villareal looked to have it all sewn up when they took a first-half lead, but a 70th minute Mikel Arteta free-kick gave the Toffees hope. On they pressed, and they looked to have turned the tie completely on its head when Ferguson nodded in a corner soon afterwards. For reasons best known to himself, scary-faced referee Pierluigi Collina – officiating his last game before retirement – disallowed it, leaving a desperately-attacking Everton open to a last-minute Diego Forlan winner

There is no such thing as the worst, there are millions of them that have been equally as bad.

If I had to pick one, I'd say its Fifa not going for goal-line technology. While its strictly not a refereeing decision its does affect the ability to correctly referee for all of them.

    Behind the linesman.

I don't see how you get that wrong!!!

    Rivaldo diving

The referee sent off the Turkish player but what was the linesman doing and why didn't he speak up?
He could not have been closer

    Absolutely ridiculous! :pac:

No way should that decision even be in the running. Lets say for a moment that it wasnt over the line and it shouldnt have been a goal - it was still very close to call and most people needed a number of replays. Theres still a fair amount of people who believe it was over the line so it cant be considered as a terrible refereeing decision.

Even looking at it now its hard to tell.

You guys can't blame attwell, it was the linseman being really insistent.

Back when I played under 15's or 16's I think, the other team had the ball in our box, took a shot and it trickled wide of the post.It had gone as far as the net pulls back where the stakes are,I picked it up,ran onto the pitch and gave it to our goalkeeper and was running back into position.I had reached the peno spot or so and the ref gave a peno for handball by me and I got a yellow card!!

Sadly there are no videos on youtube

Ah well, at least Germany got them back in 2010 .... 1970, 1990, 1996 and several other times too I'm sure.

Almost every decision that goes for Barca in the CL against the teams that look like they might win.

Chelsea a few times and more recently V.P getting sent off.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,957 ✭✭✭The Volt

A whole host of them in the game known as the Clattenberg Derby. He hasn't refereed a game at Goodison since.

Poor decision but players get booked all the time for kicking the ball away.

Plus the alternative was a penalty and red card, so either way, we had them by the balls. :)

Seen a couple incidents where referees call offside on a throw in!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 28,710 ✭✭✭✭Paully D

Stuart Atwell letting Liverpool play on when Sunderland were flicking the ball bacl to bring Mignolet forward to take a free-kick is up there.

    Also, the beachball incident too.

Might as well mention Graham Poll and his three yellow cards. Getting a call wrong can always be excused as a matter of opinion, but booking a guy three times and not even noticing just screams incompetence.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,957 ✭✭✭The Volt

Another Graham Poll special here, he blows the final whistle before the balls crosses the line. He wasn't called Mr. Liverpool for nothing, you know.

That Roy Carroll one vs Spurs was not over the line.

    Conclusive Proof

De Jong not getting sent off in the WC final was another howler, most of the obvious/well known ones covered above.

With the Garcia v Chelsea goal, Chelsea got away with it lightly. If the referee didn't give the goal, he had to send the goalkeeper off and give a penalty.

  • Moderators, Music Moderators Posts: 11,382 Mod ✭✭✭✭lordgoat

Semi final of a 7 aside, the ref gave a penalty for someone falling over in the box with no one near him. They guy fell over goes to me no idea what that was about sorry. Turns out the ref was the brother of the opposition captain. Needless to say we lost. Still pisses me off and i still give the ref grief over it every time he refs me since.

The penalty in the Liverpool Chelsea game about 4/5 years ago when someone jumped into the back of Finnan.

It wouldn't be the worst but it's pretty bad and hasn't been mentioned yet so stick it on the list.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 17,918 ✭✭✭✭orourkeda

In the now famous world cup qualifier at Lansdown Road against the netherlands.

    Shay Given should have

    a) Conceded a penalty
    b) Been sent off

for THAT tackle on Ruud Van Nistlerooy in 2001

Anyone remember Emmanuel Petit getting sent off for touching the ref on his chest, the most petty thing I've seen.

This was also the time Keane and his mob were chasing the ref around the pitch and didn't even get booked.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,627 ✭✭✭Lawrence1895

West Germany against Austria in 1982. The 1:0 helped both teams into the next round on the expense of poor Algeria. The ref (can't remember his name, I was just 12 that day) should have called the game off, a shamble that was

Has to be 1982 world Cup game between France and Kuwait. France score. Ref allows goal. Kuwait decide they wont play anymore until goal is disallowed. Ref stands firm. Emir comes on Pitch. Calls Kuwiat team off and then suddenly ref chnges his mind and disallows goal. Here is edited version.

    Some pretty obvious one's.

Maradonna's hand of God in 1986

the penalty decision that won West Germany the 1990 World Cup final....followed by 2 red cards to Argentinian players for protesting. A pure fix!

Oh and just about every referee who refereed a game where England got knocked out of any tournament. Not least the one who disallowed Lampard's goal against Germany one year ago!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,656 ✭✭✭✭Mushy

Harold Schumacher tackle on Battison. To call it a tackle is even wide of the mark. On phone so no video.

Bit of a faulty memory there. Monzon was sent off 20 minutes before the penalty and Dezotti a few minutes after the penalty for a foul on Kohler.

For me, the worst decision has already been mentioned. Schumacher on Battiston in 1982.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,300 ✭✭✭✭razorblunt

Actually what about Ben Thatcher on Pedro Mendes and all he got was a yellow?

1982 world cup semi final between west germany and france , the notorious german keeper schumacher attempts to decapitate the incoming french striker ( cant remember his name ) and despite the fact tha the french attacker is knocked unconscious and minus a few dentures , not only does the man with the whistle not give a penalty , he doesnt even book the german no 1

Was that a bad refereeing decision though?

When I watch that goal on TV (at normal speed) I still can't see the handball. I think it's very difficult to see.

Brazil v Sweden, 1978 World Cup

1-1 as the game went into injury time and Brazil had a corner. With 90.08 on the clock Brazil scored from the corner, but the ref, Clive Thomas, had blown for full time while the ball was in the air. Absolutely ridiculous refereeing.

I remember a one from a Dundalk game about 4 years ago. Can't remember who they were playing, but Dundalk were on the break, their winger cut inside and was about 2 or 3 meters inside the box when he squared the ball to the striker who slotted it. But just after the winger passed the ball he was taken out of it. The ref never gave advantage, and called the play back for a free kick outside the box for the foul on the winger!
If there's any Dundalk fans that know where the video is, post the link!

Should've been a red, Lampard's sending off in that game was terrible as well.

This season the one that really irked me was this one

just a shocking tackle, how was it not a red?
