Linux is magnificent if you give it time. You can't beat a 40 second power button to Internet boot. (Well you can, but not with windows). The reason ubuntu isn't boxed is because it is free which wouldn't be possible with the cost of retail packaging. If you go onto the ubuntu website, they will post you a cd of it in pretty packaging to free if that is what is needed to make you try it.
