Nothing head wrecking about it, you simply haven't got a TV thats compatible with saorview, your TV was made for UK DTT transmissions and is not compatible with the Mpeg4 transmissions that Saorview is using, You will need to get a compatible STB in order to avail of Saorview.

*** Mods I thinks a Sticky needs to be made for this a a new thread like this is starting every couple of days. And they don't seem able to search.

You have a TV designed for the now very old UK MPEG2 digital technology called "Freeview". Ireland like lot's of our European counterparts have chosen the modern MPEG4 digital technology. The UK itself has now adopted MPEG4 technology but only for it's HD broadcast service "FreeviewHD"

Your TV is useless for the new Irish digital TV service "Saorview" who's technical specs where published in 2008. If it's a recent purchase bring the TV back to the retailer and demand a refund as it's not fit for purpose. A digital TV sold in Ireland should work with the Irish Digital TV service, you have in affect been sold a monitor and not a TV.

EDIT - Agree with darth maul , this is a very common question and needs to be added to a sticky. We could do with some of the current stickies being removed as they run their course -"Saorview Content Speculation" , "TV's working with Saorview - The List" ... have long since lost the plot.

No, a replacement TV or STB will be required to receive Saorview.

And they are often from posters with tiny post counts. I suspect most of these posters know the reason already anyway, and are just disgruntled their MPEG2 TVs are not suitable. Some posters in the past possibly hoped RTE could be forced to change their mind and use MPEG2!

Let's abandon FM Radio too and just use AM. :(

The fact is that the whole MPEG2 vs MPEG4 thing is incomprehensible to most people. As is DVB-T vs DVB-T2 in UK.

Though RTE scrapping DAB and doing something else with the money would not hurt.

You probably need a compatible TV or set-top box and a 'w' for your head.

I agree. As a complete idiot, I've spent months on this forum trying to figure it out. A "Saorview - what do I need?" sticky would be really useful for absolute beginners with FAQ on the difference between it and Freeview, Freesat and FTA.

Content, not technology is the important thing. DAB is practically more obsolete than MPEG2 TV anyway.

I've listened to RTE Gold on DTT. Better similar Dutch radio FTA on Satellite. :)

    On Topic

Really everything people need to know about Saorview is covered better in dedicated websites than a sticky?

    www.saorview.ie (official)
    www.mpeg4ireland.com (very clean clear site)
www.saortv.info (hope to add more on Freesat, Freeview and Saorsat soon).

Further advice needed. I recently posted that a freeview box (Philips DTR220/05) is only downloading a few music stations for me but no TV stations. At first after reading this tread I took it my TV was not compatable due to it been a 5plus yrs old but then I got thinking, Shouldnt the box (not TV) still pull the stations in to it when I am doing a scan? I am thinking I should see them come up on the list as been uploaded but when I try to view I woldnt get to see them because of the TV.. Can anyone explain to me what the box is not picking up the stations? trying to work out if I should upgrade to a new TV and will only do it if I can get this issue fixed first.. Thanks .

    The freeview receiver isn't compatible.

Internal MPEG-4 (L4.0) video decoder required for the Saorview channels, that receiver has an MPEG-2 video decoder only.

With a non compatible TV you will require a compatible STB for the Irish DTT channels.

Ok so I am currently getting all the radio channels on my mpeg2 tv but no television channels. Does the fact that I am receiving the radio channels tell me that I am in an area where Saorview is receivable?

I'm asking because a neighbour told me I couldn't get Saorview because he couldn't get it.

Hi there, is a proper law for this issue, as I bought TV late 2009, a Samsung and dont have the digital tuner built in..

I've just installed an antenne on the roof. I have good clear TV3 reception. The wire goes straight to the TV. The TV gives me the radio stations PLUS the TV channels with sound only. I would have guessed this is a weak signal but there is one ironic exception, RTE+1 shows a card "This channel will resume at 7pm".

    Any thoughts?

Sound and no video indicates a non compatible digital TV for the Irish Saorview channels. Internal MPEG-4 video decoder required to decode the channels, the TV only has an MPEG-2 decoder it seems.

    Post the model no.

Also found on other thread that a CAM card is not a good solution either.
One more question... why then does the RTE+1 come in with picture?

Oh well. Do you think she'll let me spring for that 55" 3D Sony telly I've been eyeballing?

That's an MHEG-5 generated caption, it's on RTÉ1 +1 and RTÉjr when the channels are off-air.

MHEG-5 is an internal software application used for digital text at the moment and the on-screen captions above and may be used for other interactive features in future such as red button services or green button epg.

Do you get digital aertel on any of the channels?

Does digital teletext look exactly like the regular teletext? If so then yes it comes in on RTE1 and TV3. I also got subtitles on RTE1. And I got the TV Guide.

No, it doesn't look like regular teletext, it looks like the text page I linked to in my post above.

Select text on RTÉ2 or the RTÉ News Now channel, it may display the new digital aertel as these channels don't carry the traditional "analogue" text.

Subtitles and TV guide will be displayed as they are separate from MPEG-4 and MHEG-5.

Yup on RTE News Now it has the poshtext. Very spiffy.

So can I not get a good CAM card for this to sort me out for the RWC?

@The Cush - Thanks for all the help. No if you could help me convince the missus to let me buy the 55" 3D LED Sony that would be handy.

    No.

Saorview approved STB for that TV - http://www.saorview.ie/products-retailers/

The cheapest on the market at the moment I believe is this one from Argos - Bush €50

Hi - I think this question is answered by the fact that my Bravia KDL32V2000 is not listed on the 'approved list' on soarview site, but I want to double check. I get the radio channels but no TV, which I guess means that its not compatible with the Mpeg4 transmissions, correct?

If so, how much is the soarview set-top-box? Thanks!

    Hi

I'm getting 21 radio stations but no TV station it's that a problem with poor signal (Indoor TV Aerial) or that my TV is not Saorview. If I'm correct if the signal will be fine I need to get radio and Tv stations but TV chanels without picture ?

Audio and no pictures would indicate no MPEG-4 video decoder in the TV for the Irish digital TV channels. STB will be required with that TV.

What is the model no. of the TV?

Not sure what you're asking there. If you're asking about the received signal being OK for Saorview then the answer appears to be yes. Indoor aerials are OK in strong signal areas but can be prone to local interference.

Your TV is not compatible with the MPEG4 encoding used for Saorview TV pictures.
You will need a set top box, PVR or a new telly to get Saorview.

No video on the TV channels would be down to no MPEG-4 video decoding but cannot say why you get no audio.

What country/region did you use when you installed the TV? Suggest you try France or Norway as the country and see if it make any difference.

Have you tried a firmware upgrade? http://www.p4c.philips.com/cgi-bin/dcbint/cpindex.pl?ctn=37PF9731D/10&scy=gb&slg=en&mid=Link_Software

Just bring it back and get a refund or exchange for a working product. It wouldn't be the first time Argos sold a non-compliant TV as compliant - http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?p=70788358 .

The official Saorview product page lists some Alba TV's but instead of actual model numbers it appears to have Argos Catalogue numbers listed !!!! For example on the Saorview product page Alba product 5298343 = Argos 529/8343

The tv the op was sold was not a pup, It would work fine with sky or upc which most people in this country have already been using for years, I dont know why anybody is arsed with saorview and its one and half new stations.

Enda, you have to pay for those services, plus, generally, they'll only be on one TV in your average house, unless you've a couple of boxes, multiroom subs etc. Soarview has widescreen, free to air and (ok, one) HD. If you're in an area with UK Freeview overspill or have a DTT/Freesat combi box, it's very attractive indeed.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,852 ✭✭✭✭The Cush

I dont know why anybody is arsed with saorview and its one and half new stations.

Because 250,000 households don't want to or can't afford to pay an additional subscription over and above the TV Licence fee to watch our "free-to-air" public service channels. Over 600,000 (37%) households in the country receive TV through an aerial on at least one television in their home and in 12 months time if they don't switchover they will be looking at blank screens.

Saorview is not very different from analogue though, I mean 3E is the only full service you get thats not on analog, Sure Rte jr 12 hours of kids shows has been on RTE TWO for years expect it used to be called the den, You would swear that saorview is some kind of alternative to sky the way people are talking
