Ah Religion is sooo hard! I got some tips that my grind teacher did from examining the past papers and from what was said at 3 conferences earlier this year:
Section A: He said that Socrates is very likely to come up as the philosopher or they might repeat Aristotle this year to throw a curve balll!proofs of good such as Anselm and Aquinas too. Cosmologies and non-religious response to the search for meaning would be worth a look over aswell
Section B: Conflict with the Establishment, Christology and Messianic expectations
Section C: Other main living traditions!!!! I.e. Confucianism or Baha'i you only need to know one
Section I: Two patterns in religous trends in Ireland

This is just a guide, but if you cover this in depth you should be sorted:D
    Best of luck guys!

I think that's the only LC religion book. :P Unfortunately.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 452 ✭✭Platinum2010

We have 3 books one for the Irish experience one for the search for meaning and then the hob knobbed book

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 369 ✭✭Violafy

Oh yeah, I forgot there were different books for the different sections , shows how prepared I am for religion! I think it's the Christianity one that's divided in loads of sections with the same page numbers - what a joke.

Hey guys, back when I did the LC Religion wasn't an exam, just a waste of time. What do you actually learn for it?

They should just reform the course and call it Philosophy.

I did it two years ago and we did 4 sections; Philosophy, Early Christian Communities (Something else in there.... I forget >_<), World Religions and then an optional section on Science and Religion (These sections vary from year to year, I'd have preferred a section on Religion in Ireland, because I'd have been less likely to rant about religion being wrong >_>)

    How to waffle. :D
Seriously - philosophy, "the search for meaning", christianity (worst part), morality, gender roles, stuff like that. Some parts are a real headache, some are interesting and some are just ridiculous. The exam itself is also atrocious.

I don't understand why they should tbh, religious studies is not a bad idea, it is one of the single biggest influences on culture, a separate leaving cert philosophy exam wouldn't be a bad idea though.

Either way, that's kinda off topic...

Philosophy (Ancient Greek/ Medieval/ Enlightenment/ Existentialism), Mythology, Ancient/ Primal Religion, Cosmologies, Humanism/ Atheism/ Agnosticism/ Reductionism etc, Religious and Secular Values, World Religions= Judaism, Islam, Christianity, Hinduism, Buddhism, Baha'i Faith, Sikhism, African Traditional Religions, Taoism, Confucianism, NRMs etc. (don't do all, get some choice), Morality (Ancient Civilisations/ World Religions), Celtic Ireland (religion, practices, burial sites etc.), Religion In Ireland (development: christianisation, reformation, ecumenism etc.), religion and science etc. etc. etc.
A very broad course but with various options/ choices:)

This list depresses me, as I've just realised how much I have to learn in the next week. Still taking a full day off tomorrow after german though. :D

Have to say it sounds quite interesting and a lot more diverse than I'd expected it to be, best of luck to anyone taking the exam =)

Really hope human rights come up. Christology is a must but if it comes up it will only be 40 marks. Kingdom of god as preached by jesus better not show hate doing it.

Hopefully I get my A1, religion is a sybject that really depends on the teacher regarding the outcome of your result in it.

I think it was 2007 when charateristics of Kingdom of God came up so I'd really doubt it would come up again!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,545 ✭✭✭Geo10

I'd say for this year you could completely leave out what came up last year, if that even barely skims the course down!:D Because of the lack of choice in the paper they have never repeated the same topic 2 years in a row ( although I only have about 6 papers to go on! :D)
So if you feel learning everything is impossible I'd leave out:
Section A: All Chap 1 (Search for Meaning in Music/Literature, Factors Blocking Search), Aristotle, Evidence of Religious Behaviour in Ancient Society
Section B: Early Christian Communities (Corinth/ Philippi/ Thessalonica), Jesus coming into Conflict with Authority
Section C: Inter-Faith Dialogue, Distribution of Religion
Section D: Influences on Development of Moral Maturity, Jesus' Law of Love
I'm not sure about the options, the same thing really comes up a lot in the them!

I'd say focus on (I know it's a lot but...):
Section A:Plato, Sophists, (maybe Socrates), One key moment in development of philosophy, One key myth about meaning of life, Spirituality in Contemporary Culture, "Proofs" of God (), Divine Revelation, Non-Religious Responses to Search for Meaning and Cosmologies!
Section B:Kingdom of God (characteristics + Jewish understanding at time), "Evidence" () for Jesus, Key Moment in Return to Origins (e.g. Reformation), Christology, Jesus in Film or Art, Christian Unity/ work towards ecumenism (against sectarianism) and Effect of Resurrection
Section C:Contemporary Experience of a World Religion (Judaism/Islam etc.), Primal Religion (characteristics + influence on one contemp. religion), Other Religion or NRM (depending on what one you studied- go Baha'i!:D), religious festival or rite of initiation/ passage in World Religion (maybe compare Jewish festival with Islamic one), vision of salvation in diff. religions and structure of community of believers in 2 religions!
Section I: Everything! (sorry but usually very broad 80m Qs!) However it is worth noting that pre-Christian Ireland didn't come up in the longest!

i have never heard of half of the things you said! i have 3 books 'The search for meaning and values' 'faith seeking understanding' and 'religion and science' They are all as bad as eachother! full of irrelevant info. You are expected to wirte an 80mark essay on a topic that has only 5 lines on it in the book!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 348 ✭✭xclw

ahh i've totally neglected religion, i've only got my notes on section a done :/ may start soon, i've still got accounting too.

i have a set of papers and for sec a anselm and newton and the "proofs" haven't come up since the fisrt year religion was an exam subject. to be honest its the hardest subject to predict cos its so broad and new

does anyone elses teacher give them notes and extra things like personal responses and all every 5 minutes so much learning

oh and the syllabus is here

normally you have to discuss 2 points @ 40 each so I'd say 4 pages in total

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 348 ✭✭xclw

religion is so hard to know with, our class do
    Sec A, B, C and I
but in the mocks one of my friends answered Sec D even though we've never done it before and got higher marks in that than anything else

when answering questions try make links between sections because they seemingly love that, and also my teacher said that if you've time write down anything that you think may be relevant to the question because they won't mark you down it willl only bring up your grade.
he said repeat the question in each paragraph too to try convince the examiner you are answering the question.
I'm lucky i had a brilliant teacher who wrote books on religion and all but he never once gave us tests not even for christmas so do you think we studied it at all?

    canto464 wrote: »

    as much as possible!
usually questions are 40 marks or 20 marks, so generally for the 40 mark questions you should aim for 4/5 paragraphs, an opening, 2 middle ones with the main answer and and a closing where you write something personal.
so approximately 2 and a half pages for a 40 mark q depending on your writing, if its small 2 would do

its all like peace as an alternative to violence, sharing goods as an alternative to wealth, a god of the powerless as opposed to one of the powerful and inclusion as an alternative to the emergence of the elites

Latin and Religion. . .christian brothers school, by any chance?

Classical school :p They're getting rid of Latin though...

Nice to know that the mod made my thread more appealing :D

Religion is rock-hard. Its very difficult to understand and you have to have a serious grasp of essay-writing and to do some extra work outside of school on the topics. I got 97% per cent in the Mocks but I was pure lucky and I thought I was going to get a B2. AND I ran outta time on the last question and had to rush it. The books are not enough for the religion course...just look at Christology. Its hotly tipped to come up and we're supposed to study two, but only one is done in the book, with a paragraph about him thrown in as an afterthought in the Christology section. Plus, there's no resources online like on skoool.ie, there's no revision books like ReviseWise and you're expected to elaborate on the scarce information that you are given to begin with. Not to mention that we only get two and a half hours to do basically 4 essays on demand with about 4 or 5 pages each!

Plato and Cosmologies are tipped to come up for Section A, Christology for B, Common Good for D and changing Gender Roles/gender roles in two religions could come up for E. Didn't do C but primal religion or NRMs might come up, I heard. I'm screwed if Nano Nagle and Gately comes up :/

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 348 ✭✭xclw

yeah they should really make it a 3 hour exam and give a choice on every topic, my teacher said they complain about that to the department every year but they won't change it.

Plus, I haven't even mentioned the fact that we have to answer on set questions...no choice as in history. If you don't study Messianic expectations, and it comes up, you have no other choice but to do it.

btw, can someone please give me a rundown on the messianic expectations? In my book its not done all that well! I know about Priestly, Davidic, Prophetic etc. but I've no idea on Jesus' awareness of them. Someone help! :pac:

We should all just pray and we'll get through this!

It came up in 2009. Go to the 2009 marking scheme on examinations.ie. I find it explains the 3 expectations and his awareness to them way better than the crappy textbook (albeit short). I look at the marking schemes of various years to get more info on the diff. topics that have came up e.g 2010 for Aristotle's philosophical ideas.
Btw, I highly doubt that will come up this year because it came up in 2009 but with the lack of choice we get I suppose we'll have to learn it anyway.

You must have done nothing in the last two years so. It's so easy when you put the work in it's a walk in the park.

I don't know about anyone else but the journal work which many think helps them, might drag me down a grade (Down to A2 or B1)

Don't bother looking at the curriculum just take out your notes and use postets to break down every topic and ofcourse:

    Expand, Expand, Expand,Expand,Expand,Expand!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 452 ✭✭Platinum2010

Or if you go through the book you could break down the sections for those of you who dint receive notes

I can't decide whether or not to study what's come up in the last few years or not. I've got a lot to do so need to prioritise. Do you think it's likely they'd repeat questions when the course is still so new?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 452 ✭✭Platinum2010

I'm going through past papers because they pretty much coincide with the syllabus . And everything that's on that Is what were supposed to know
