Boards A/R/T 8 week loss challenge - Part two

Now unlike those on the fitness forum we will have guideline and not rules as those training for larger races have different needs and a naughty reward can help focus us towards finishing that extra mile etc in training or a race.

Also there is no point doing anything today that you can't see yourself doing in 6 months or a year. We are all trying to create a new us and some lifestyle changes will get us there quicker than a list of RULES !

So we'll weigh in each tuesday and try to do it at the same time each week. As in morning or evening.

We'll ask you to post at the start with a short bio, fitness goal and starting weight in total pounds.

Then a weekly update with starting weight and current and how your week went training wise etc. We'll then do a table each week showing how all are doing ( not a leaderboard as this isn't the biggest loser )

Also you must measure each week as muscle weighs more than fat and if you lose fat and replace it with muscle you can gain on the sacle but lose inches off your body. We'll just do 2 inches updates in the middle and at the end.

Below you'll find some help on measuring, how to prepare and on diet ( these are thanks to g'ems )

    How to Prepare
    Measurement Guidelines
    Diet I
    Diet II
    Diet III

You may want to reference the Fitness:The Basics (Incl Diet and Nutrition) thread aswell as it's another great thread put together by the fitness forum guys. Transform has some good videos on that thread too which might have people more inclined to follow the no junk food guideline.

    Here are the guidelines

    1. eat healthy - take the healthy option when possible
    2. keep well hydrated
    3. keep a food diary and read labels on food to see what in your food.
    2. exercise and prepare properly for your race
    3. Limited booze, junk food and caffine
    4. don't starve yourself the day of/before a weigh in
    5. Measure your body as you can stay the same on the scales but can loose inches
    6. Weigh yourself at the same day and time each week were possible as your weight can change a lot during the day.
    7. Your only in competition with yourself so jut because someone loses 2 pounds more than you don't get down over it.
    8. Never mind "no pain no gain".......i rather "no effort to gain"
    9. Share youe experiences, good and bad. They can help others and we can help you.

So let the fun begin !

You can join in anytime over the peroid and remember your doing this for yourself in the long run ( excuse the pun )

Right I'm in. I hadn't weighed myself in Months but I weighed myself this morning with this in mind expecting to see about 167lbs. A bit shocked to see i have skyrocketed up to 171 . The problem is since the Conn Ultra I still eat like i was doing 70 miles a week.

The goal is to get back to my racing weight (somewhere close to 160lbs) for the Berlin marathon in September.

I'm in too. Lost 5 stone since start of 2008 resulting in doing Dublin Marathon last year. Currently about 5lbs lighter than I was when I ran Dublin last year. Would like to get below 175 in the next 8 weeks if possible. The training will take care of itself but just need to focus on the nutrition end of things and stop saying to myself your doing lots of training so doesn't matter what you eat.

Good luck to everyone with the challenge.

p.s. I'll update the measurement to cm later.

Hi all, newbie here! Saw the great results on your other thread and decided to join in this time. I'm a mother of a 3 yr old, and weight has been up and down like a yoyo since I had him. I guess I'm lucky in some ways, as I can lose weight quite easily with a little effort, problem is it goes back on just as easily. I guess what I hoping to get from this is small changes that I can stick with, a change in lifestyle without the drastic overhaul that lasts a few weeks before it's back to square one. Mainly I want to be more active, I was a very fit and healthy person a few years ago, and hate the way I feel lately, lethargic and irritable!:(

If I lose 1lb a week I'll be happy.

Unfortunately, this week I'm not going to be able to excercise at all due to a medical issue, so relying on diet alone. But come this weekend I should be well enough to ease myself back into excercising! :)

    Good luck everyone!:D

Got from 192 down to 186 last time so I'm going to keep that progress motoring along. My end-goal is 12 stone (168lbs) so there's 18lbs in total to shift. I'm on sick leave for the next three weeks which means I'm going to be eating very little (but also doing very little exercise), so I actually think I'll lose alot of this weight in the next three weeks, with maybe a few pounds to go.

Obviously starving myself while on sick leave isn't the healthiest way to lose weight, but once I'm fit and healthy again the goal is to ditch the last few pounds but also get my running/fitness back up to speed (no pun intended). I'll need to regain some muscle but I'm determined I won't be regaining any of the weight.

I have no idea why the tables won't work for me - it just says "no code has to be inserted here" or it just all appears with the (table) and (/table) tags but doesn't turn into an actual table. If someone could add me or link me to a tutorial that works, that'd be great.

Im a newbie here and like the above poster I saw how well the previous thread worked and wanted to try it. I'm only 5ft 2 so I'd like to lose around 7-8lbs during the challege and hopefully another 2 or 3 after it finishes. I've been running for about 6 months and I'm not really training for anything in particular, I just like to feel fit and healthy and I enjoy running :)

Em I hope the table worked, not entirely sure if I did it right!

Edit: Ok sorry I have no idea how to do the table properly!

    Hi all
Im 6ft 1 and 182lbs I would like to get down to 168lbs but I'm probably more concerned about getting my body fat % down a bit (currently 20%) I will have to add the waist measurements tomorrow morning, I think its 38in but better check first

Run 5-10k and Cycle 20k most days, best of luck everyone

Im a newbie here too and once I came across this thread I was definitely signing up for the next round. Nothing like a bit of accountability to keep yerself on track! Hoping to shed a few pounds/inches over the course of the challenge and continue afterwards with an end goal of 12 stone (168lbs). I like to run and cycle on and off road. I've done a few 10k's and half marathons but always feel my running would really benefit from me shedding some of this excess weight. So here goes! :)

I was reading this thinking of joining, but why is weight in US Pounds, where everyone in this fair land works in Stone and/or KG :)

No huge worries, as I have been weight obsessed for so long I know my weight in all 3, but I betcha most people have to convert..

I prefer to use pounds rather than kilo's as it's easier to lose a pound than a kilo :D

I'm up for this again. I'm going to aim to lose 1 st again. That way my goal is to be well below 17st for the Dublin City Triathlon which is my main race of the year, and also well on my way to hitting my 15st target. I put a couple fo pounds on in the last week whilst on holiday but would expect them to go pretty soon.

    exactly :D

@vagga don't you follow your running pace in miles instead of km :D
You can do it in whatever format you like, some also use inches instead of cms but each to their own.

Right am going to give this a crack, have a target to hit the 12 stone mark so am looking to lose about 8lbs.

Main reason for it is to be able to drag myself to do the Galway Bay Half Marathon on the 1st October.

This is also the reason for using cm's rather than inches for the waist size :D It's not like we are being anti-metric.

PS: Just to be awkward, should we add in a new column to track our weight loss so far?

I know personally I'm not that bothered about measuring inches coming off.

I started to lose weight last year managed to get down to 172 pounds from 224. Put on 10 pounds this year because i got injured and ate for ireland. I want to be in the 154 - 161 bracket. But for the next 8 weeks if i lost 6-8 pounds i would be happy but wouldnt cry if i dont. It is a long proccess that must be done slowly.

I've quite a bit of weight to ditch myself ultimately, but for the next 8 weeks I think I will set myself a goal of at least a 7 lb weigh loss. Obviously if it's more than that, even better.

Kg will work out at .xx the whole time and its easier to read pounds whole off a normal scales than .xxkg ( i bet a majority don't use digital scales ). I'll glady convert for you if its going to be that difficult to manage:rolleyes:;)

    Go on join :)

The inches are important because you can replace fat with muscle and stay the same on the scales even when you have changed your body shape and fat percentage. It can be an important motivator, i only lost 8 pounds in 8 weeks the last time but took 2 inches off my waist so i could relate to that more.

Good luck to all and remember to state your exercise goal for the 8 week period !!!! As in 5km in X time or to finish your 1st 10km race...........

I'm back in too. 207lb starting weight is due to buying a digital weighing scales and they don't agree with the old one - there is about 3lbs in the difference so I'm actaully down a lb from the end of the last session. I've set myself two challenges for the next 8 weeks:
Firstly: my main aim with this is weight loss and I aim to get under 200lbs. If things go well, I would ideally like to get to under 196 (it's a VERY long time since I weighed in under 14 stone)
Secondly: I've signed up for the Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown 10k on August 1st which I'm aiming to complete in under an hour (last weekends 10k LSR was 1hr 5 mins and 33sec which is the fastest I've run that distance so far). I'll see how training goes over the next 4 weeks and may push this down closer to sub 55 mins.

Im back too!:) Last time round I lost 5lbs in the 8 weeks even though I went on holidays for a week and fell of the wagon another week so I was delighted with the 5lbs in the end. Would be very happy with another 5 this time round. My ultimate goal is to be 126lbs. Im starting the training for DCM next week. Last time I put on weight in the first few weeks as I ate more to make up for the training. This time round Ill eat more but more healthy type stuff.

Hope it's OK for me to join in with this, even though I'm only new here! Was a long-time lurker, going to start posting now. :)

I'm 24, female, fairly new to running. I'm very very slow ... fastest 5k time is around 36 minutes, fastest 10k time is around 79 minutes.

I'm 5'5 ... just weighed and measured myself, and it's not good! I weigh 168 pounds, and my waistline is 97cm.

My aim for the next eight weeks is to drop at least eight pounds - hopefully more - and to bring down those times for my 5k and 10k runs.

Could someone possibly update the table for my times? - I can't work out how to update it myself! Thanks!

I weighed myself this morning and I'm still 236 lbs exactly which is good in a way as I haven't put anything on, but bad in that I haven't lost more. I really want to get that first stone off and I should have done so by now. I have lost 10.2 lbs so far which is good but not enough. Ideally I want to be a maximum of 12 stone exactly which is 168 lbs but after doing some research online, the heaviest I should be is either 12 stone 6lbs or 12 stone 8lbs, I can't remember which, but it's one of those two. My initial goal weight is 12 stone max but when I get there, I might try and get down to 11 stone. Will see how it goes. I have a lot of flab to get rid of.

I think I'm going to try and eat healthy all week, no junk, no choc/sweets etc, proper portion sizes. Then I think for one meal per week, I will allow myself to eat whatever I want. However for the rest of that day and the rest of the week, I need to eat well.

Am walking to and from work every day now too which is about 4.5k per day. I'm planning on starting my Dublin Half Marathon training in about 2 weeks so dropping some weight can only help me. Will be using the Hal Higdon Half Marathon Novice plan. Not quite sure how I will combine it with two sessions per week at the running club but we'll see how it goes. I still haven't joined it yet but hoping to before the end of the month.

Following Hal's program is the way to go !

Just eat healthy and exercise and you'll see results ! You should also try a 10KM or similar race along the way.

Yeah I actually have done 3 races this year, a 5k, 4 mile and 10k. I was half considering doing the 5 and/or 10 mile race in the Phoenix park this summer as a build up to the half marathon in September but I will see how it goes. Want to check that training programme again and see how the races would fit in to the programme.

My diet is really what's letting me down. I watched an interview the BBC did with Ian Thorpe who's making he return to swimming. He was talking about how he had put on weight since he stopped swimming and how he was trying to lose it. He was saying that fixing your diet is the quickest way to lose weight rather than exercise, and for some reason what he said really stuck in my head. Combining the both is ideal but it just kind of re-inforces in my mind that you shouldn't use doing lots of exercise as an excuse to slack off on diet control. Am talking about myself here :)

    Actually found the interview:

The problem is that people tend to get stuck into the "I've been for a run today so I can have a mars bar and a snickers" routine which means you end up stayig the same or if you do still lose weight then as soon as the excercise gets put on hold then weight piles back on.

I think it really is as simple as calories in < calories out = weight loss. It's up to us to decide how we decrease the calories in and/or increase the calories out and to keep the balance tipped the right way.

    /sermon :)

Not sure I'll be able to weigh in on Tuesdays for the next couple of weeks, that weight is from Sunday, currently living in a hotel midweek so only have a scales at weekends.

Started at 213 in April, weight loss has been slower than I'd like but at least it's moving. Currently training for GaelForceWest, using a modified version of Jeff Galloway's Half Marathon plan

    hi
want to sign up to this. I am 139lbs and 75cm waist. Fairly happy with the exercise - do bootcamp twice a week, also try to get out for 15min interval running 3 days week.
Eating - isnt too bad, have 3 good meals but the snacking on chocolate and diet coke really lets me down, i'd have at least one of each every day if not two!! keep trying to kick the habit and keep falling off the wagon, its annoying!!
    Goals:
    weight:126lbs
Fitness: Do a 10k in 50min(this was my time last June, but I was also a stone lighter)
Health:work on beating my sugar addiction!!
Motivation: to keep this log up!! I did start one before and gave up after a week!! Also couerdelion, I have to agree I'm of the "i've done bootcamp, so I can have a bar of choc" brigade!! think if I could work on this one small way of thinking it would make a huge difference!! thanks

can someone put me on the list too...

Time to give this a go again. Lost a few pound in the previous one but not as much as I would have liked... As someone said I fell into the trap
"I ran today so I can eat what I want"
Exercise is taking care of itself so now I need to work on the diet and not eat as much crap.
Aim for next 8 weeks in 10lbs anything lower is a bonus on my way to a goal of 200lbs which is only lose 20% of my current body weight..

And I'm in. I reckon if I lose 10lbs I'd be happy enough. I've yoyo'ed up and down for years, I'm in better shape than I was 10 years ago but heavier. I've a big birthday this year and NYC marathon in November to look forward to. 10lbs would make a difference and make me comfy in my clothes, as opposed to a bit too tight. Sweets and biccies are my downfall, must be good!

I know the feeling Bally. I love choc, and crisps, and sweets and pretty much any sort of food that is bad for me. I recently got this chocolate from Lidl and it came seperated into little bars inside the pack. I thought to myself "Ah, one piece per day won't hurt". But of course I'd have to eat 4 or 5 at least. To be honest I find it very hard to have chocolate in my place and not eat it. So it's just easier not to have it here at all.

I've noticed that I don't miss it that much either. I think it's harder to have it here and not eat it, than to not have it here at all and not eat it. Occasionally I still do get pangs for it, but I kind of just let myself have one or two bars once a week and that's it. Usually after a chinese on a Saturday night :D

Or I guess you could have a healthier sweet thing to eat. Perhaps a cereal bar of some sort. I've started taking those Flora Pro-Activ drinks and they are nice. Plus I made some wholemeal scones with sultana's in them at the weekend and they are quite nice. Not sure how healthy they are though!

Those so called 'healthy' cereal bars are pure muck. All of the unheathiness with none of the taste of a nice chocolate bar. Just read the ingredients and the calorie totals if you don't believe me. I'd rather just have the real thing (best to have neither though).

Are there any of these which are any way decent??

Anyway after reading this I've decided to sign up. My target race this year is the Dublin Marathon, I did it two years ago and was happy to get round but this year I have a more ambitious target. I definitely want sub 4 but not ruling out 3:50 and I think diet is a big thing for me. At the moment I'm 175 but the target for DCM is 168 but for these 8weeks I'm going to aim for 170. Current waist is 85cm.

    Hi birdsong
You have to quote the most recent post with a table in it and then remove the quote tags [/QUOTE] at the start and end of the post and then insert yourself in the table.
