Stay away from the folding knives when it comes to gralloching deer.

I have heard one too many stories of lads cutting themselves badly on a knife after it folded on them.

    I like this set.

All you really need is the gut hook knife. The fine detail is a nice luxury. The saw is nice as well. I get use out of all three whenever I gralloch, but the gut hook is the one that goes into my Get Out Of Dodge (Goodie) bag.

Get rubber grips. I love the look of the wood, bone, ivory, and all. However, when it is cold and your hands are covered in blood, the rubber grips will be the safest.

    Actually a useful father's day present!:D

+ 1 . Not a fan of folding knives for the reasons mentioned.

If its something cheap, cheerful and does the job try Muela. They are a decent knife, good edge and fairly relaible. i have a good few of them and they come in multiple sizes, shapes, lengths, etc. They run around €25 - €95 for the lowest to highest priced one.

I picked up a few of these in Cabelas and brought them home.

At $8.00 a knife, they have paid for themselves over and over. Comes in handy when you have to cut something that may damage the blade.

Turns out, I love it. Sharp and doesn't easily dull.

Get yourself a buck 110 folder. They are a brilliant all round knife for the tasks you describe. If your only going to be doing the odd deer pick up an inexpensive fixed blade. Maybe a Mora clipper or hunter.
This is a good site to buy off:

I bought my buck 110 and a mora clipper from them and they were very good to deal with.

I have to say, I am very impressed with my leatherman MUT, but I paid €156 for it in Jan sales and they are gone up now AFAIK.

But a lesser leatherman will get what you want for teh price you are willing to pay i reckon.
They have a lock blade too as well as a pliers which has sooooooooo many uses, including rescuing your ATM card from the Drinklink if it gets stuck ;)

    Just one example

I have a Muela fixed blade and find them a very good knife for the money. Great to take & keep an edge.

I also have a Buck 110 folding lock knife for the past 29 years.....brilliant knife.....very solid and also great to take & keep an edge.

As Fathers Day is next Sunday Week shops in U.S. will not suit your needs if present is to be guaranteed to arrive on time.

Both of the above knives are available here in Ireland on-line

For basic work any of the swedish Carbon Steel knives are very good!

    http://www.heinnie.com/Knives/Mora-Knives/c-1-92-304/

For a folder fillet knife I like the Opinel

    http://www.heinnie.com/Knives/Opinel-Knives/Opinel-Slim/p-92-469-4205/

and you can receive both for very little outlay by the kids/missus! The babies love to make Dad happy, and two knives are more than one in kids math!

Get your nearest and dearest to get you any knives and I will sharpen them for you for nothing. Any decent steel I can make shaving sharp but still durable, drop it in the post and I'll send back a good working knife.

(Was gonna send back a razor, but they are brittle and **** for skinning game!)

No I have had many knifes of all descriptions sent to me over the years, I have never had any problem. Most knifes are not illegal to own, it's only if you are in possession of you when you have no good reason to be in possession of it at that time, that you can run into problems.

I had one of these for ages as my stalking knife, kept a very sharp edge for ages, lost it out in the field one day after gralloching a red hind, raging

Searched everywhere for it but couldnt find it, must get a new one for this year

Mora 2000. Check out the reviews - everyone loves it & superb value.

The comments regarding folders are odd in that you would be mad to use one that doesn't lock & most do. Luckily lock knives are not illegal here as there are in the UK - lots of controversy over whether a leatherman constitutes a lock knife in the UK.

I am not into hunting (as many here know :D) but a friend has one of these monsters & it's a work of art.

I used my leatherman MUT to cut a deers throat the other night, and the saw to cut through his tib so I could fit the leg in the fridge :D

They are quite sharp from new

My replacement Wave arrived razor sharp. Leatherman's incredible warranty is a good reason to buy one. I snapped the file on my old wave - entirely my fault. Peterson's sent me a brand new one & even better it was the newer model.

I carry a Wave, bit kit, bit extender & a small adjustable spanner. The lot fits in the Wave pouch. I also have twenty year old Puma Master - fabulous knife & still as good as new.

For a "proper" knife this I use every day:

I have to say I can not give enough praise to leatherman
I want to get a few more bits to correspond with the torx on my Burris mounts
