Surprise, surprise €50 for me today, I'm not even sure how long it's been since my last win, think it was July or August last year

  • Registered Users Posts: 67 ✭✭The Gibmiester

€50 for me today. My first ever win on €10k, which I have been saving sporadically for the last two years. Based on previous posts here, I was starting not to expect any return until I had at least double that.

    Congratulations!

5 blanks in a row for me on €101,150. Still averaging just under 0.5% p.a. net over the 3 years and 1 month since I purchased the bonds.

Register the bonds on the site tracker. They sent my mam out a cheque before Christmas, on bonds she got in the 70's. These days, they transfer the money to your bank account.

Still without a win here. Sticking in 50 a month the past while, on €2800 now.

You could get lucky and win two prizes in the same draw with less than that, like these people in Kildare today. Since they did away with cheques, the default is to give winners new bonds if their previous payment option was cheque.

Prize Value Winning Prize Bond Location

    €50 AOB857022 Kildare
    €50 AOB857307 Kildare

    €50 AOF042973 Kildare
    €50 AOF043356 Kildare

    Nothing for me today.

I found prize bonds from 30-40 years ago, can you still cash them in? If so how do I do it?

No issue encasing them so long as they are in your name. Repayment form is here:

You might also want to check for unclaimed prizes ! Follow the links to check both recent and unclaimed prizes on this page.

Am I right in believing that they have their next biannual €1,000,000 prize draw on June 26th?

I don't have a Prize Bonds account (yet) but I'm tempted to get one setup in time for this draw; have I left it too late for the million draw?

They have been dealing with much more than normal purchase applications over the last few months. Possibly more than normal withdrawals as well.

    https://www.statesavings.ie/help-support/help-articles/coronavirus-(covid-19)-message-from-state-savings

They don't offer any set number of days to process applications. I think you are probably too late for the €1 million which will be 26 June.

    5. (1) As soon as may be after receipt of the purchase money in respect of bonds, the Operator shall allocate an individual serial number to each bond and a bond certificate showing the relevant serial numbers shall be issued by the Operator to the holder.

Congratulations. That’s a return of 12% approx, or 1.25% AER. Not bad. But had you known you would be leaving the money alone for that length of time you could have stuck it in a 10 year National Solidarity Bond issue 1 in 2011. This offered a 50% gross return over 10 years or 4.14% AER. After DIRT this comes to 3.96% AER.

Of course if you win the €1m next week all that changes.....

Someone recently said (on the radio I think) that the odds are close to 300million to 1 (it might have been 700, they were comparing it to the odds of winning the euro millions which is 140million to 1) on winning that, and while it seems high, I don't understand, does that mean there's only 300million (or 700) "entries" in the draw, or is that some quirk of statistics that I'm not getting, or was the guy just wrong.

    It depends.....

Currently there are approx 600million prize bond numbers active, so the chances of a specific number winning are 1:600million

The purchase unit is 4 numbers and multiples thereof and has been for a long time, so for the majority of holders the chances of a unit of 4 numbers winning is more relevant and this is 1:150million

Of course, for any prize bond holder the real question is what are the chances of me winning, and that is a factor of the number of bonds held. e.g. the chances of the owner of 800 numbers (€5,000 holding) winning are 1:760,000

In other words, odds so long that they are almost irrelevant.

Would being owner of 800 out of the 600 million prize bonds not be a 1/750,000 chance of winning?

Same here. I got 50 euro back about 2 months ago on a 50 euro investment made 11 years ago!

You have to write to them/fill out a form and request your PB numbers afaik.

You are right, thanks. I’ve corrected the original. Shouldn’t be doing statistics early on a Saturday morning.

Question:what happens if I was to lose my bond? Can't see anything online to say I've bought so much of prize bonds? Would the money be lost?

Ask because I bought prize bonds almost 3 weeks ago and have not received the bond in the post. My account on state savings does not mention any such purchase?
