I've just reported their posts. One thing is posting an odd comment that might not be relevant, but they've been asked more than once by a few people.

We've invested in ETF for a while now, and peer-to-peer lending and we also had 'quick access' savings sitting in the bank...but we're sick of earning nothing in interest in the bank so we decided to thow some of the cash savings into prizebonds.

So we've jumped on the prizebonds bandwagon and invested €40k. Will be curious to see how these compare to the eft and peer-to-peer...

I have an income accumulating back in Ireland (I live abroad) as well remittances and want to have it somewhere it can be making money or at least improving on deposit rates for my wife and I with low risk. Can I buy a four figure worth every month or am I limited to a certain amount of transactions per year.

If you're abroad it may be difficult to purchase, unless you are coming back... as your initial purchase has to be done in-person at the PO to verify identity etc. Also, purchasing online they only accept Debit cards, and again the maximum amount I have been able to purchase online is €2500  so again, any subsequent big purchases need to be done in the post office. I couldn't find a Bank Transfer option when we were getting our funds in... had to do a Bank Draft.

I'll be home over the Christmas period so can wait until then. I will be home roughly every 6 months for extended periods so I can do them in one lump every so often. In truth, what I am looking for is a way to keep savings intact, liquid but still get a better rate of return than leaving them on deposit.

In truth, what I am looking for is a way to keep savings intact, liquid but still get a better rate of return than leaving them on deposit.

Your initial purchase can be by post, see details of the application process on the website. You will need to include a cheque/draft and a full set of AML documentation, including evidence of PPSN.

Once the initial purchase is complete and you have an SSCN (State Savings Customer Number) you can purchase a fixed number of bonds monthly by direct debit. There is no limit on this as far as I know, other than the aggregate limit of 250,000 eur per person.

Also, once you have your SSCN, you can purchase ad hoc amounts online using your debit card. I have purchased 50,000 eur worth on a number of occasions in this way. Obviously you will need to have the money in the account your debit card is linked to in order for the purchase transaction to go through, or sufficient overdraft facility.

Be aware that An Post have “tightened up” the documentation requirements in recent years and made the whole process extremely frustrating, especially for first time and online buyers.

    Some Tips:
    • If you can I would suggest the use of an Irish address and Irish bank account.
    • Suggest you select the “Reinvest winnings” option on the application form, otherwise you will receive a 50eur cheque in the post every time you win and be left with the chore of cashing it.
    • Set up a prize bond tracker account to track your holdings/winnings online.

    Best of luck !

That's interesting about the Debit card, cos my card has a €2500 limit on card per day  and when I rang the Bank to ask, even if they could lift it or authorise a once-off TX they said it was a Mastercard security thing. Which was a right pain in the behind for us.

Is your card a Visa debit?

    BTW, week 2: nadda

€50 for me today from my March 2009 Small Medium Bunch which last won exactly 9 months ago on January 4th.

October €50 prizes 4868 per draw up from 4832 in September.

  • Registered Users Posts: 20,846 ✭✭✭✭dxhound2005

It's been exactly a year since I last did some figures on the PB's , so as of this weeks draw there is €3,465,680,000 in the fund
That's up by €256,880,000 from last March , giving a average net growth of €1,019,365 for every working day last year
There are now some 554,508,800 bonds in each draw, up from last year by roughly 41,100,800 bonds
And their chasing 4655 weekly prizes which is only up from 4161 last March by 494 extra €50 prizes

So my guesstimation of wins per holdings per year hasn't really changed since July '17 but I've added two extra guesses for the smaller bond holders

    €100,000 = 7 wins
    €50,000 = 3 wins
    €25,000 = 2 wins
    €10,000 = 1 win every 2 years
    €5,000 = 1 win every 3 years
    €1,000 = 1 win every 14 years
    €100 = 1 win every 143 years
    €6.25 = 1 win every 2291 years

I dragged this up from March to make a comparison with what actually happens in the draws, and it largely works out. Any set of one million bonds, worth €6.25 million, will win 468 prizes in 52 draws. I derived this from a count of how different sets of 10 million bonds performed in various draws. It converts to 7.5 wins for €100K (4.5 wins for €60K, referring to a previous post). But at that sort of level, and a lot higher, there can be losers and winners compared to the average.

The reason that €100K does not get 10 prizes (0.5% return) is that 99.5% of the prizes by number are €50 prizes. But the bigger value prizes get a lot more than 0.5% of the prize fund.

More counts would refine the numbers, but it is good enough to prove the figures we have been working with.

Your figures are broadly in line with my actual experience. Thank you.
