saw it in the evening herald today pg.26. the guy was having an argument with rail staff and he said to officers that ireland was a banana republic and should be cut off from europe.
It is kind of offensive to an irish person but it goes to show how we're viewed. He was obviously an arrogant d*ckhead in the first place looking for trouble.

    It sure is.

Banana republic is a pejorative term that refers to a politically unstable country dependent upon limited primary productions (e.g. bananas), and ruled by a small, self-elected, wealthy, corrupt politico-economic plutocracy or oligarchy.[1] The term banana republic originally denoted the fictional “Republic of Anchuria”, a “servile dictatorship” that abetted (or supported for kickbacks) the exploitation of large-scale plantation agriculture, especially banana cultivation.[1] As a political science term banana republic is a descriptor first used by the American writer O. Henry in Cabbages and Kings (1904), a book of thematically related short stories derived from his 1896–97 residence in Honduras, where he was hiding from U.S. law for bank embezzlement.[2]
A banana republic is a commercial enterprise for profit by collusion between the State and favoured monopolies, whereby the profits derived from private exploitation of public lands is private property, and the debts incurred are public responsibility. Such an imbalanced economy reduces the national currency to devalued paper-money, hence, the country is ineligible for international development credit and remains limited by the uneven economic development of town and country. Kleptocracy, government by thieves, features influential government employees exploiting their posts for personal gain (embezzlement, fraud, bribery, etc.), with the resultant deficit repaid by the native working people who “earn money”, rather than “make money”. Because of foreign (corporate) manipulation, the government is unaccountable to its nation, the country’s private sector–public sector corruption operates the banana republic, thus, the national legislature usually are for sale, and function mostly as ceremonial government.[3]

Well the country is a banana-republic so he got that much right.

As for calling a garda a monkey, if it is true, then he was a mouthy prat and wouldn't be nearly as brave doing the same around German police. Although I have seen worse right here on boards, so no need for a lot of posters to get indignant now.

Same happened in 2007 from ze German Ambassador
THE German Embassy in Ireland has moved to defuse a diplomatic row after the German Ambassador described Ireland as 'coarse' and criticised our public service system.

Christian Pauls was given a firm diplomatic reprimand

In his 15-minute speech the ambassador said:

    Ireland was a "coarse place".
Junior ministers here earned more than the German Chancellor.
Some 20pc of the population were public servants.
Our "chaotic" hospital waiting lists would not be tolerated anywhere else.
    Wage demands were too high.
Our immigration policy was wrong and we had learned nothing from Germany or the Nordic countries.
He also cited the doctors' rejection of €200,000 a year posts on the basis that this sum was "Mickey Mouse" money and referred to the former dominant position of the Catholic Church within the country.

His listeners, mainly members of the German Federation of Buying and Marketing groups, representing medium-sized businesses, loved his delivery.

    How dare him
Oh wait a minute, he was right

Who cares what is thought of Ireland? And yeah, much of it is true - I'm just not sure about the "banana republic" label. It's something I'd associate more with extremely poor South American dictatorships.

Criticism of a country is perfectly reasonable - it's when that criticism is extended to anonymous individuals from that country that the line is crossed. Neither German guy mentioned here did that.

Not when you're staying or visiting someone elses country. Its a bit like going to someones house and calling it a ****hole. Its unmannerly.

He had a previous conviction for harassment and had been given a 9 month sentence according to the article.
I know what would've happened had this occured in Germany.
He should've been deported a long time ago.

The way I look at it he wanted an argument! He argued about our nation as a whole to some everyday people doing their job. What good is that? He probably has a psychiatric issue
If he thinks that way about here he should leave as we dont need a jerk like that causing trouble and wasting garda time!

They paid our bills to get the US/European banks off our collective backs.. Letting one of 'em call a Gard a 'monkey' is getting off pretty light if I may say so..

Well, now to pay them back! (That was the real insult :D ) *even though we can't*

Paid our bills? Christ! Surely people have grasped the simple concept by now? Reckless Irish banks, were recklessly loaned money by the German and French banks. Now we have to bail them out and cover their losses. It was not 'our' bill in the first place. It's amazing how some think, that the ordinary Irish taxpayer is somehow responsible for the financial incompetence and latent greed of European and Irish banks.

That's all true CM, I was just having some fun with this story ;)

And no, as a seasoned political/cultural activist (no, not a silly once-off protester) I think Irish people haven't really grasped the concept or reality at all, but in saying that they do know we have been manhandled and coerced into accepting the unacceptable, namely paying debts that aren't really ours.

How much longer will an insurmountable greed champion over Irish apathy and laziness? That's the real question. Action, beyond inane rambling and petty political infighting, seems to be something foreign entirely to us.

    Not to go of topic..

Inselaffen is directed at the English in Germany. They tend to think of the Ireland as slightly charming messers and don't apply island monkey much to non-English people (in my experience).
