I guess iTunes Match is basically just a way for Apple to save bandwidth and they don't care if half your library is pirated. So even though you'll get an iTunes version of the song, it's still not legit because there's no record of you purchasing it. But I wonder if they are sharing the info they get from scanning your library with the record companies.

Also, it seems a free @me.com email address will be part of iCloud:
    Mail that delivers. Free.
When you set up iCloud, you get a free me.com email account. iCloud automatically pushes new email messages to all your devices, so your inbox is up to date everywhere you check it. And iCloud keeps all your folders in sync, no matter which device you’re using.

Well they had to do it. They just about copied all the idea's out there all ready in terms of the cloud. Excluding music, apps and video which is new ground. Unusual for apple. But they needed to do it. To compete with Android. Of course Apple will do it better.
I use google for all my docs/calendar at the moment. Synced with my gf.
Ironic I was also using tabbed browsing with terra, plus there hide all button too. To look at the various blogs doing the keynote. The twitter thing is very interesting.
Overall the keynote was great. They are starting to listen to what people want. Now it's going to be hard to wait for ios5.

Google Music launched last week, google has been synching your apps settings to the cloud for eons now, and https://market.android.com/ allows you to sync and zing apps with all your presets between android devices. Apple basically ripped off everyone else to make ios5 and its cloud service relevant. Apple used to innovate, now they imitate....

Apple are rather clever. They have a database of 18 Million songs already, so I'm guessing all they have to do is "match" your songs to their library of 18 Million songs. This, I'm sure, will save them alot of storage space and money. But the likes of Google do not have this library of music, so have to store each users on their servers which takes up alot of capacity on their servers. I believe Google also allow you to Stream the songs which is also strenuous on their servers.

Have to say I much prefer the locker method, as in you download the music to whatever device. I have no interest in streaming my music. It's no use if your in another country.

Don't get too excited about iTunes Match:

That could be just the pricing.

iTunes match is a great idea, is it cross platform? or iOS only? I would probably lob them $25 a year for a great service like that if it could be used on my iPad and my Android phone...........if it ever makes it's way to our shores.

iTunes Match monetises piracy, I'm guessing the labels are happy that they're getting SOME money for the pirated music.

I have noticed tonight in the App Store updates page, there is a purchased tab that shows you all apps you have downloaded and I can reload them onto my phone.

Is this the new over the air updates kicking in already?

Thought that was a quite interesting keynote for Apple, some good stuff. Most of the iOS 5 improvements should be long here or have taken 'inspiration' from Android (eg. copied). Nonetheless, nice to see them at last. Or at least soon!

iCloud looks great in terms of syncing everything and I am delighted that its free. iTunes Match seems like it could be a great service, IF everything is as it seems. Hopefully they will have time to get the licences to get UK, Ireland and Europe included as soon as possible, US only at the moment.

Overall, I think we should be pleased.

Roll on the next iPhone announcement though!! :D

    For existing MobileMe customers:
Effective June 6, 2011, if you had an active MobileMe account, your service has been automatically extended through June 30, 2012, at no additional charge. After this, the MobileMe service will no longer be available.

    Taken from 9to5mac:

Not sure if this applies outside the US.

Google's music launched last week because the WWDC was on today. So that trolls could say "Google did this last week". Apple probably didnt code this in a week.

Apple's service is better because they have so much more information about everybody's tunes.

    What sucks is US only.

Not getting it on my iPad just iPhone, however any app I download on my iPhone appears on the iPad straight away.

roll out of it is probably staggered depending on what apple server farm you're hitting.

I wonder if iMessage is only for their service or if it pushes network based SMS too?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,534 ✭✭✭Dman001

I don't understand how iMessages work. When sending a message, is it all based on Email addresses? Or could a send it a message to a phone, and it works similar to Webtexts?

I presume it relies on users' Apple ID's? Good question though, I hadn't really thought about it too much. I was just disappointed it wasn't pushing normal SMS to my iPad. :(

so..you just swipe down from the top to access the notifications list ??....i can imagine it would be easy to accidently do that while in a game that has you touching that part of the screen.

Noticed this last night on my iPad2 also. Interesting that they have the little cloud icon also...

If you go into Settings > Store you can turn on automatic downloads for newly purchased apps not on other devices.
