    Hey,
Yesterday I was doing deliverys with my friend for a local Chinese take away. I was amazed at the amount of people who didn't tip. I thought that everyone always tipped the drivers but apparently not!

So do you tip your delivery driver?

I tip them through their €188 social welfare payment!

No - They get paid already.

There not all on the Social Welfare. The person I was with is a Student. They don't get social welfare.

Pah, where is the option for people too poor to have fast food delivered?
I always tip the delivery boy, if they make it past the hounds and barbed wire mantraps they deserve that extra €2.

In my area, they all have full time jobs and have to do it to earn enough to keep afloat.

    yeah...for the driver

I'd say it goes towards paying him minimum wage. I would imagine that after paying the drivers, most take away's still profit from the delivery charge

I've done delivery driving and I can you that I made 120euro on busy nights - had to put 25quid petrol in so 95euro profit for 6 hours work -

    on a bad night you'd make 60 quid -

From what I know about it, drivers get a fixed fee of €20/€30 per night, plus the delivery charges from Chinese/Indian takeaways. In takeaways that offer free delivery, drivers are paid a set fee per night. Usually Pizza joints.

I honestly don't know for definite how it works, but for the sake of 2e, Id prefer for the people handling my food not to dislike me

Also, pizza joint? Were you in saved by the bell?

How long has it been since you done deliveries? yes things use to be this good but not lately, especially since the new year. Ive been doing deliveries for quite a while now and lately I consider it a good nite if I go home with even near min wage. And thats only taking into account the cost of petrol and not the extra wear and tear on the car!

For those that don't tip, the driver will always remember you. I always give preferential teatment to tipping customers. The most common is when I have to do multiple drops in one trip, I will always drop last to a customer that doesn't tip. Whether there order was in first or not!

bout 3 years ago when i did it properly - done one for a family member 2 weeks ago and got 70quid. - 6 hours minus €20 for petrol.

Also the same people normally just order and you'd know the non tippers - if their house was first then they'd get their food first and I would just have their change ready like I would with everyones order -

I was a student with a part time job as well as doing it so i had plenty of money so maybe it'll be different for a driver thats struggling.

If the drivers received minimum wage per hour off the employer, would you tip? It appears most people tip out of sympathy, when quality of service is what I relate tipping to. Why do we pay the wage the overcharging fast food place could easily afford?

Never tipped and don't plan on starting any time soon.

The american min wage is terrible, and the drivers need tips to get by, it is standard practice to pay 15 % at any food establishment as their income and wages are based on this.

Ireland has a high minimum wage, and 'tipping' is a redundant practice there and purely an american cultural import. It is ridiculous here in the US but necessary as it is ingrained economically as part of the service industry, it is NOT in Ireland, and is pointless.

Don't get this ridiculous sh1t started there too.

My opinion on this would be that most delivery drivers do this job because they need the money (don't we all?)
I would think that the drivers would have set routes from their base (clockwise/ anticlockwise or North/South - East/West) which would be interchangeable based on the specific customers ordering at the same time. I would think that the driver will favour a regular customer that gives a regular tip over a regular customer that doesn't, so I always have a €2 coin tip ready - if the delivery takes over 50 minutes = no tip but if the delivery is within the stated time = driver gets €2.
In my personal experience only once have I withheld the tip, so it would seem that my theory may hold some credibity.

Not a scientific diagnosis so results may have been affected by the lovely pizza I had delivered last night

If I like the driver and theyre nice/on time/my food is hot, then Ill always tell him to keep the change of whatever I give him-which is usually €1.50-€3.

The one thing a driver can do to make me not leave a tip is take ages getting the change together in the hope Ill say feckit it, keep the change. I will happily stand there uncomfortably for five minutes while they root through their pockets pretending not to have any change purely because if I want to leave you my change I will, dont try and coerce me into it. Pet hate :p

i will NOT tip in the hopes that i'll be treated as a proper - 'paying customer who tips' in the future. i dont do it for hairdressers either. i only tip for something im particularly happy with. someone else summed it up well ' i wont pay someone for doing their job when im already paying for the service'
ive heard all the reasons for tipping: crappy wages and trainees needing to get by etc. this isnt america
but i consider a tip to be for something special. not a wage subsidy

needless to say, i didnt get my romantic horse trip round central park!!

will tip myself, but only if i think it is deserved. glad ireland is not like usa

Yes but you have to declare it to your insurance company
And form I've seen asks if you're doing delivery work

    Might hike the premium

I give the Dominos delivery man a 50 cent tip. It's too dear to be giving any more than that

I tip my hat to him in gratitude,

Considering that there's a percentage (and I don't know the amount) of fast food delivery drivers that cash in hand per nigt plus their tips, then no I don't tip, cos they're probably earning more than I am.

On the other side of that, all you odd jobbers beware, Revenue have a massive new force ready to go out and snooker people, won't kick in just yet but I promise you, it's coming soon, including folk who have stalls, it will be incoming very soon.

Revenue cracked down on that years ago by visiting markets, taking names and ensuring stall holders were registered as self employed. So they are just repeating the exercise and rightly so.

However I will add that cracking down on odd jobbers, is in my opinion detrimental to the country in the long term, because it forces more reliance on the welfare system. When caught odd jobbing, I think the result should be incentive based and not punishment based. Odd jobbing has the potential to be a viable business.
