Monkey stoned and burned to death for being a witch

Children traumatised as animal welfare group blames 'dreadful superstition' fuelled by ignorance
A monkey was pelted with stones, shot at and burned to death in a South African township because residents believed it was linked to witchcraft, an animal welfare agency has said.
A mob chanted "Kill that witch!" as the vervet monkey was put in a bucket, doused with petrol and set on fire, according to witnesses. Children who witnessed the killing last week were said to be traumatised.

One resident, Tebogo Moswetsi, admitted he had captured the monkey as it sought refuge up a tree in Kagiso, west of Johannesburg.
"I was curious to see this monkey that people claimed could talk, and when I saw a group of people chasing after it, I joined them," he told South Africa's Star newspaper. "When it went up the tree, I climbed after it and brought it down because I was curious as I found it unbelievable that a monkey could talk.

In Hartlepool they hung a monkey because they though the monkey was a French spy.

    Damn, beat me to it.

That's why Hartlepool people are known as monkey hangers (although I thought they believed it was a devil).

Must be, a local legend (that may well sadly refer to a child crew member rather than a primate) from England at the time of Napoleon is obviously on a par with some group with bones in their noses burning a monkey to death, last week.

Niall Mellon must be baffled. All those houses he and Paddy built for the poor black people, and this is how they behave. Tut tut. Next he'll be building houses for monkeys to save them.

And, what is with your racism jibe?

From all the posts, you are the only one mentioning racism. Insecure, are we?

In fairness though, getting the chap stoned first was pretty decent.

Though parts of Africa may still lie in relative 'darkness', they at least have the excuse of poverty, lack of education, isolation etc. Your ignorance, however, doesn't have such caveats attached.

I realise that for some reason you woke up today with a need to get a dig in at some charity and Mellons name was on the calendar, but chucking it in here is a bit off - even for you.

Why would it be "insecurity"? How is that even relevant? I reckoned you'd use this to look down on black people in general - and I was right. No biggie. Christ, you even implicate people whom you've no idea were involved or not. You've more than proven my point.

While this incident dosnt make me look down on all black people, it does make me look down on the black people involved.

No, I think it's quite apt. Considering it did occur in the "housing estates"
that he and Paddy built. Love to know what he thinks of it. And, I wonder how the renting of the houses is going?

Hmm, implicated whom? Black people? Eh, it did happen in the townships, didn't it? So, I am guessing it was black people who were involved.

So, care to explain the racism accusation? Is the word black a racist word or something?

I had no idea that life in a housing estate produced a certain standard of education and behaviour. Evidently the denizens of Darndale, St Marys and Moyross are dwelling in straw and mud huts. We should send Mr Mellon down there next, with his wondrous domiciles.

Can't miss an excuse to trot out the same oul whinge, can ye?

You still haven't explained this magical link between housing and education/behaviour.

What's ignorant about apportioning blame based on behaviour rather than skin colour?

People were queuing up (well, I think three did) to scoff at an 18th century folk tale, just because it involved supposed animal abuse, and the protaganists were white, using it as a parallel with these poor misguided souls and their monkey burning shenanigans.

Speaking of education, I gather South Africa, downhill and all as it has gone in the last couple of decades, is still one of the more affluent African countries. Which isn't saying a lot, but even so...

Personally, I don't care what colour your skin is, but if you act like a primitive twat, that's pretty much the inference I'll draw.

And if every story I read from a particular part of the world throws up similiar savagery of one form or another, then I'll tend to draw a pattern, and lose the initial surprise when yet another such story appears.

I can still treat people as I find them, though, and tend not to indulge in over compensation. In either direction.

I might add that story from hartlepool was a perfect parallel given the lack of socio-economic development of large parts of SA society.

Not you, Nodin, for fecks sake. Don't be obtuse.

The Hartlepool story is unproven, of course the locals love it, because it's a colourful tale.

    Oops, there I go again.
