My experience has been very positive. I had very little pain, and what discomfort there was didn't last long.

I would say go ahead with good confidence, but err on the side of caution in terms of recovery. I think that Sync covered a lot with his post.

Regarding pain killers, Dr. McCormick said to me (and i have heard it before from pain specialists) that it is easier to stop pain starting than to address it when it has started. So take the nurofen and paracetamol according to the maximum amount you can take/day over the first few days. Don't wait until you are in pain.

There are a very small number of people who experience chronic pain after a vasectomy. In those very small number of cases it can be difficult to resolve. That is probably the most significant risk with the operation (significant as in it would be a big problem - but the chances of it happening are very low). But it is better to stop those pain pathways getting established in the first few days after the operation. Hence, take the painkillers!

I did get a jockstrap. If you do a search for vasectomy and jockstrap, you will see that it is recommended as standard. The level of support is significantly different from briefs or boxer briefs - I really noticed that when I stopped wearing the jock and changed to briefs. Wearing tight pairs of briefs/boxers has a different effect, as they kind of squash your balls. The jockstrap lifts and supports them - a bit like a bra for your balls. Dr. McCormick used to supply the jockstrap after the vasectomy, but he said that after brexit/covid etc., it was hard to source them and people used to complain that they are uncomfortable, so he stopped and now just leaves it up to people to either get their own or go with tight underwear. It is true - they are a bit uncomfortable, particularly at night. But as with the painkillers, I figured that it is better to err on the side of caution in this. As an aside, if you search amazon for jockstraps, you will enter a whole other world, as they popular for both sports (mainly in US, but also over here for martial arts etc.) and as kinky underwear. Some of them are basically just briefs with the backside cut out of them - that is not what you are looking for! Boards won't allow me to post links, but if you send a pm, i can send you on a link of the one I got.

Last thing, about a week or so after it, i started to feel some discomfort, and regular ejaculation seemed to help with it. I guess it relieves the pressure or something like that. So a good excuse for more sex!

He sends the letters out in batches. I waited ages so emailed him and he confirmed result over email, then sent letter a while later.

Got my letter last week to confirm that I have the all clear. Delighted I went ahead with this and thanks to all on here for their recommendations for Dr. John.

Ouch, sounds sore. Was it the no-scalpel method?

  • Registered Users Posts: 118 ✭✭Trondheim

From my experience, the wound (which was tiny) healed really well. Not surprising to have blood stains on the first day. I think i left the dressing (which was just a folded piece of gauze) off from the second day, and i didn't notice any blood stains after that.

Sorry, can't see any way of searching within a thread anymore. Anyone aware of places over here doing this under a general? Zero interest in any other method.

I have been thinking of doing one myself recently having finally had all the children we planned to.

Despite not being entirely adverse to minor discomfort and pain I also think I am way too squeamish about that particular area of my body to do it with anything but General too!

Somewhat paranoid about the whole area of pain afterwards and complications - even though rare. But I suppose thems the risks if you want it done.

Yeah I had a cytoscopy about two years back which was one of the more hellish experiences imaginable, and will never willingly let anyone near that area again unless I'm unconscious.

I imagine if you contact any of the clinics to ask about getting it done under a general, they can talk you through the options.

It'll end up coming out expensive. You'll have to pay for the cost of the theatre, anaesthetist, a couple of nurses, medication, a recovery bed, and some other stuff on top of the regular fee. And your health insurance won't cover it.

So suddenly a €300 procedure that takes an hour of your day becomes a €3000 one that needs a whole day.

The heart wants what it wants, but if you lie back and think of Ireland, stick some headphones in and close your eyes you can get through it.

Think I'd only be paying the excess either way based on my insurance policy. Most of the clinics seem to be set up for local anesthetic only so didn't think they'd be able to facilitate. Not a pressing issue at the moment anyway - will stay intact if its not an option!

Had mine yesterday with Dr Killian Bates in Sandymount.

Only problem whatsoever was finding somewhere to park.

In and out in 30 minutes. Took 2 panadol immediately after and going to bed but none today, but have them in my pocket. No trouble getting to work as working from desk in my bedroom anyway.

#Would recommend him to anyone. vasectomy.ie

like having a tooth out. no need for referral - no need to take time off work - no need for painkillers - maybe a fortnight before getting back to activesport

Anyone had discomfort with playing football ?, i.e kicking a ball ? 3 months later, still feeling it slightly , like a sensitive sharp pain when booting a ball.

  • Registered Users Posts: 68,317 ✭✭✭✭seamus

Can't say I've experienced anything as specific as that, but I have been on-and-off more "aware" of twinges and pains down there since having it done. I don't know if this is psychosomatic, or actual pain :D

Yours sounds really specific, might be worth asking the doctor who did it, or your GP for advice.

Does health insurance cover for any or this? We are with laya healthcare.

Just had our third so am relatively comfortable getting this done. I enjoy cycling though and worry about the effect it may have on that?

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,039 ✭✭✭lg123

I'm with laya and they didn't.

The best part is, after you get it done you will be still paying for maternity cover with Laya, you can't take it off!!!

  • Registered Users Posts: 68,317 ✭✭✭✭seamus

Health insurance won't cover it, but you can submit a tax claim for it.

I enjoy cycling too and it makes no difference. The very, insanely tiny incisions are made on the front of the sack, so no real risk of injury. In the first 3 days you might feel a bit too protective to go cycling anyway.

During the first 6 months or so I got two or three bouts of epididymitis which is pretty common. NGL, it's uncomfortable and I wouldn't be mad on cycling on those days, but it never lasted more than a day or two.

Booked in to have this done with Dr. John McCormick (Vasectomy Ireland) next week. Just wanted to say cheers to those of you who shared your stories and opinions so far. Much appreciated.

Had mine almost 4 years ago.

I was 39 at the time & we had decided that we were finished with having children.

My left testicle was straightforward, the right was extremely painful & not a nice experience at all, it took a while afterwards for the incision to heal, after that I've never looked back, a friend who knows about it gives digs about me firing blanks now, that's more his issue being a dickhead than anything though.

Sex feels the same, ejaculation feels the same, just without the worry of an unplanned pregnancy.

I'd have no hesitation advising someone to have a vasectomy if they are sure they are finished having children, just be careful who you tell about it.

I had mine done on Wednesday afternoon with Dr John McCormick (vasectomyireland).

I don't know if it's just that I'm a bit of an outlier here, but I took two Solpadeine before going in, and afterwards, took one Solpadeine every 2 hours for the rest of the day. The following day (Thursday) I started the day with one Solpadeine, and took one every 3 hours until I'd taken about 3 and I stopped. I haven't taken any since then.

At no point have I felt pain, sore, numb, itchy, tender... or anything really. I can see where he did the procedure (much lower down than I pictured it being - I thought it was at the bast of the penis where the penis/testicles meet. but it's lower on the testicles, near the bottom at the front).

Only downside was I managed to faint after getting it done, whilst still in the office. That's happened me in the past with giving blood etc. but didn't anticipate it would happen here. Didn't feel particularly nervous going in, so it caught me off guard. He dealt with it quite well, and I wandered over to McDondalds (I was in Dublin) for a cup of tea and a chicken salad before driving home, to waken myself up a bit and get some energy flowing through me.

But yeah.. I'm hoping it's not a case of the 'calm before the storm' but I've had no issues at all. I even spent an hour on the motorbike this evening and nothing at all. I feel very fortunate, I have to say, cos this doesn't seem typical at all of most people's experience. I just have to hope that the sample I send in, in a few months, shows it to have been effective.

anyone able to recommend a clinic in Galway city who carries this out ?

A lot of people here (and myself) seem to have used Dr. John McCormick of VasectomyIreland.ie. I got mine in Dublin, but he apparently has a Galway clinic, too.

As an update to myself, although I managed to be totally and completely pain free after the procedure (which i had on a wednesday morning), since yesterday (monday, 5 days later) I've had a bit of a tender feeling down there if i move around too much. It's something that I am noticing, but it's not actually painful or sore insofar as I'm not actually bothering to take pain killers or ice it or such.

Try clearing the pipes. I found it relieved the pressure.

I'll give it a shot, but I'll have difficulty getting a plumber on a bank holiday weekend.

(ah no, in all seriousness, I have done that, and it does seem to help a little, but I think I may possibly just have a little internal swelling or such. Can feel it if i feel around down there, but it's not actually sore, hasn't stopped me from doing anything and isn't causing issues, so I'll leave it be for a few days and see how I am then).

having one of these next week , to those who have already underwent the procedure , did you carry out the preperations yourself and was the doctor fussy ? , Im a tad reluctant to embark on a big lawn mowing exercise , especially with a razor , anyone recommend a particular strimmer , tik tok is full of adds for them

  • Registered Users Posts: 6,637 ✭✭✭SuperBowserWorld

I would imagine that's all part of the service. And they know exactly where to do it.

  • Registered Users Posts: 13,505 ✭✭✭✭Mad_maxx

you imagine incorrectly , the clinic told me in writing that I needed to come prepared

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,533 ✭✭✭A2LUE42

Mach3 or similar and take your time. Don't leave it until the day before either. Do it this week and then do it again next week, nothing to worry about.
