"Communications Minister Pat Rabbitte has said we have no choice but to adopt "Is Feidir Linn" as our new national motto.

Mr Rabbitte described the last week in Ireland as "extraordinary", hailing the visits of Queen Elizabeth II and US President Barack Obama as huge successes.

He said the open-air concert and speech by Mr Obama last night in Dublin's College Green will live in our memories forever, and that Mr Obama's Irish translation of his famous campaign catchphrase 'Yes we can' should be adopted by us all.

Minister Rabbitte also said he got a chance to speak to the US President yesterday and asked him whether he had enjoyed his pint of Guinness in Hayes' pub in Moneygall.

"He said it was delicious," Mr Rabbitte said.

I'm pretty sure we do have a choice.

Just because he's Communications Minister does he automatically think he gets to win the Suggest A Motto Competition?

    What about my suggestion?

"Ireland. Sure everything will be grand!"

What a ridiculous thing to propose. Irish politicians once again prove themselves devoid of creativity.

    That or "Yes We Can't"

In years to come, the last week will be known as the Great Era Of Haymaking.

The bigwigs have gone now, lads. Put away the flags and get back to the job you were elected to do.

    BAH to all of ye,

I think its funny and nice, sure why not use it? Its better than "sure the country's fukced"

Its easier to listen to than all of the anti-Irish bolox that's been spilling out lately.

    FOOK the begrudgers.

    Is Feidir Linn

Ah now this isn't begrudgery. It was a good speech and all but a suggestion that we make it our national motto is only sh*te talk.

Actually - do we have an official national motto?

A good question and the best I can find is wikipedia

No offical moto but we have
    Éire go deo (Ireland forever)
Fé Mhóid Bheith Saor (Sworn to be free)

I'm dubious, I've never heard either of these

Surprise surprise, local politician piggybacking on the goodwill generated by Obama.

He can go and shove his 'national motto'.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,889 ✭✭✭evercloserunion

Not nearly cynical enough for Ireland. With an attitude like that we could eventually get back on our feet, and what would we have to complain about then?

jesus h christ on a f'ucking bike - i just spent the last hour arguing for the level of hype surrounding the Obama visit, now i have to come in here and state:

It's gone too far - stop the madness!!!

    Neither have I.

Do all countries have a national motto?

What's the USA's one? "Everything's bigger over here."

What's England's? "We'll colonise you but we don't want you here."

    What's Andorra's? "Hey! We're a country too!"

A lot of negative neddies around here.

Mr.O'Bama and Roger Rabbitte are just trying to instil a positive attitude on us, whether it be "is feidir linn", "i.m.fooked" or "we've got our lipstick on", it's just an attempt to restore some national pride and remove the total negative attitude and outlook that we've been clouded with lately.

Look at all the negative threads on here, You dont half see many praising stuff.

Im jumping on this positive attitude bandwagon anyways. Sick of negativity.

And if you disagree, dont worry the gloom and doom will be back soon.

Don't worry we will always have the weather to complain about.

It's a bit like hearing the 'cool' kid at school say something and you copy it hoping you will be cool too. But you're not cool. You're lame.

To be honest I think it is about time we started thinking more positively. This country far too fond of this 'woe is us' crap.

We never going to make things better if we spend our time feeling sorry for ourselves and begrudging every positive thing that happens.

It's nice, but a little too long.

    Lol.

Tbh I think we need to start thinking 'Yes We Can' instead of the usual 'No We Can't And We Never Will'.
