The overwhelming bulk of the fighting in WW1 was in Europe was it not ?

I don't know if it is "bulk" of fighting on Europe that makes it a world war. It was spread all over. The Pacific and Asia were involved. Gallipoli in Turkey can be viewed as Asia. Africa saw clashes as did India.

No, it wouldn't. It'd be our greatest downfall.

We've picked sides for quite some time now... We just haven't had the bottle to come out and actually say it.

I'd be playing FIFA, if soldiers invaded I'd say "Yeah go ahead lads, I'll leave you to it. What? You want me to help destroy everything so it can be rebuilt? Nah you're grand" *bang* I'm dead so it doesn't bother me any more.

Shannon was never a nuclear target during the Cold War. Bantry Bay was the only nuclear target in Ireland.

Our tutor (granted, a little odd) told us that in the event of such a conflict being launched, Cork's port facilities would be attacked by a nuke as it was a deep-sea port. Whether this holds any sway is absolutely beyond me.

I think I remember there being some target in Donegal too, remember thinking it was odd

And all the major world powers were involved

Unless someone has unearthed any cold war era documents from the Kremlin this stuff is pure speculation.

Ive heard figures for the number of targets in Ireland ranging from 0 - 30

I assume one of those targets would be the government bunker in the middle of the county.

Shannon has a very long runway capable of handling large military type aircraft. To think it wouldn't be a target is wishful thinking, perched as it is right on the Atlantic with a deep water port (Foynes) not far away..

I'd guess nearer the 30 figure you quote. If a war broke out or had broken out in the 1980's between NATO and the Warsaw Pact we are/were doomed by our location, as we are in the middle of the air and sea routes between the USA and Western Europe.

If NATO even glanced at our airports and seaports as potential alternative re-supply centres, the Russians would have taken them out. In fact they probably would have been targeted at the same time along with similar facilities in NATO countries if WW3 had gone nuclear.
