Jack Russell missing after hunting please read

im just posting here hoping someone with a knowledge of hunting might give me some insight.

we've two jack russell's a male and female. the female has 5 pups 3 weeks old. the other day both dogs got together and ran off hunting in the fields around us, they would normally do this if by mistake they were out at the same time. The male came back but the female didnt, they were gone from midday till 9.30 that night, which is unusual.

if the female happened to get stuck down a rabbit/other hole, would she try to dig herself out or what do you think?

please any info would be great. we've walked the fields looking for her.

Anything could have happened. Take the other jack russel out with you and walk everywhere and with luck he could lead you to where she may be.

Hi Fodda, i know. We have brought him but he's not leading us anywhere.

I would just keep looking as long as possible. If the other dog is with you he could lead you to rabbits or foxes where your dog may be but she could be anywhere and the only way is keep looking. If she is lost she will come when she hears friendly voices.

Try local dog warden and animal charities :(

    And the local halting site/s

This happened to me a few years ago. My brother brought the dogs for a walk and let them off the lead. They made a run after a Doe. We searched the forest for 4 days. Just as we gave up, the dogs were standing next to the car in the car park of the forest.

It just shows that the dog will try to find its way home. It was a miracle that they stayed together and found the car. Hope the same happens for you. Best of luck!

It does sound like she could be stuck im sure she would have made her way back by now unless she has rambled into a house or something so get the word out, but dnt give up hope all the best in finding her .

Go to where you think she is and leave a coat or her blanket, something with scent and if shes in the area she will end up sleeping on it until you return;)

Is there any badger setts, fox holes or rabbit holes around you? If so stick your head in and shout the dogs name;)If shes there you will here her whimpering or barking

If shes stuck down a hole she will starve until she can fit back out of it, sounds harsh but heard of it before where working terriers got stuck or thought to be dead in the hole, then to reappear a few days later skin and bone. If she does return like this, re-hydration is key or Vet asap!!!!!

Someone could of took her? i.e dog warden, kids or someone out hunting etc

Ive had dogs that where sold and stolen from me to return months and even a year later, they always remember where they live, same as a cat!

Something similar happened to us years ago. 2 dogs went off about the farm hunting but only 1 came back. Dad gave days walking all the bounds of the farm. he finally found her stuck in a burrow. He had to dig her out. How he came upon her was the other dog showed a lot of interest the burrow when they came to it.

I lost a russel out hunting before he was gone near four weeks and I had given up hope of finding him. One evening when I was in the yard he just turned up as if he was never gone. Dont lose hope as if he is around he will come home eventually.

    Thanks everyone for your replies

Still no sign of her. but your stories of dogs turning up some time later has made us hopeful.

We've phoned the dog warden, spca, asked neighbours and ive put posts up on facebook.

The other terrier isnt leading us anywhere, we've walked the fields everyday with him hoping he will lead us to her. There's plenty of rabbit and fox holes around us but havent come across any badger setts, we are calling into them but not hearing anything and cant see any fresh clay where the dogs might have dug.

If only dogs could talk eh :)

Was the dog covered in earth when he came back? If he was then it's a distinct possibility that she's in ground.
Get onto the local harriers and foxhounds - chances are they'll have gotten a call if there's a terrier spotted. They may even help in the search - they'll know every burrow in the place.

    Spunk84 is speaking sense.
She's probably close enough to you - under a mile.
It's unlikely that they ran a fox to ground ;) so try the places where there's a vixen rearing cubs - they'll be obvious enough if you walk the hedges.

Get a GPS Collar for her next time ;)

Because she shrunk from lack of food where she was stuck became not so tight after a few days.
Terriers are devils for getting stuck.
Good result, I was afraid she was (a) Robbed or (b) Brown Bread!

It is great to get feedback on this thread that the dog is found.
There are threads like this every now and then that just fade in to the lost pages of boards.ie as the OP never updates it.
    Thank you.

is there anyway to secure the area they are let out in so it doesnt happen again?glad you found her theres nothing worse than loosing a dog!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 23 kyia

We're delighted she's back, really thought she was dead or taken. the night before she came back we were walking the fields again and had said that it was our last night out looking for her as we'd given up hope.

we have them in a run but because the female has the pups we let her out for a run around and to get a break from them, it just happened that the male was out at the same time and off they went. but we're going to get one of those fences where they wear a collar and get a shock if they pass it, cant think of the name.

the radio fences are handy alright. we've had spaniels, german shepards and rottie's on them for years. just be sure to take the time to train them to it.

i once had the the jacker out with me with my springer, she bolted a rabbit from cover and the jacker darted after it. the rabbit only moved a total of three metres, i couldn't see the jacker anywhere, he didn't return to the whistle, then the springer was about ten yards further up from me digging like a jcb at this hole, i looked in and there was the jacker trying to squeeze out. i had to move a bit of earth to help him out.
we've all heard of greyhound ferrets but i've never heard of a ferret jacker. :D
glad you got your dog back :)
