I don't think you're allowed on the Kilkenny train, too many hen & stag parties heading to the marble city and it was getting too messy

    The choo-choo train.

I think normal licensing hours don't apply at all, though I'm not certain.
I've heard stories of people staying on the train all day on Good Friday as they could get drink.
Definitely saw a guy drinking a can of Budweiser on the train at 8am once.

"can" being the operative word ;)

Drinking: the only thing that makes public transport superior to driving.

Pro Tip: get one of those blue cooler bags in tesco and some freezer slabs. Refrigerate cans. Freeze slabs. Stick em in the coolbag and keep it zipped shut except to take new cans out. I got 16 cans into one for a stag in cork. Took it out on the way back up and the remaining 4 cans were still ice cold.

If you're not a messy drunk then the ticket inspector won't mind.

Used to work on the Cork - Dublin train, was one of the guys who pushed the trolley with all the lovely snacks. Yes you can drink, but id recommend that you bring your own, that is unless you fancy paying a fiver for a can of heinekin thats been sitting in there for two months

Alcohol free trains on NI Railways services
    View All News

    21st April 2011
Translink NI Railways is reminding passengers planning to travel on the Bangor line over Easter or the May Day bank holiday weekend, that it operates a no-alcohol policy on all trains.
In order to curb the antisocial behaviour which has blighted several beauty spots in North Down during previous public holidays, Translink has formed a joint initiative with the PSNI to ensure that any alcohol being carried by passengers will be confiscated.
Rail Route Manager Gerry McAtarsney said, “In previous years, groups of young people have travelled to beauty spots such as Crawfordsburn Park and Helen’s Bay to consume alcohol. This has led to incidents of antisocial behaviour, which as well as disrupting local residents, can prevent families from enjoying days out.”
“We adopt a zero tolerance policy to alcohol on board and will be working with the PSNI to confiscate any alcohol being carried into stations or onto trains, so would urge passengers planning to travel on those dates not to carry alcohol with them. Alcohol will not be permitted on any NI Railways service over the holiday period. We want everyone to enjoy the holiday break in a responsible fashion that doesn’t impact on the safety and comfort of other passengers.”
Inspector Julie Blain, of the PSNI North Down Neighbourhood Policing Team said, “This is a positive proactive partnership with Translink that will assist the PSNI with the management of anti social behaviour in North Down over Easter and May Day. Although the majority of Translink passengers and visitors to North Down are responsible and considerate, the behaviour of a small minority has led us to put this measure in place.”
“Any passengers carrying alcohol on Bangor line services will be asked to leave the train or alternatively to hand the alcohol over to one of the PSNI representatives who will be travelling on the train."
Historically, young people from outside the North Down area have brought alcohol to Helen’s Bay and Crawfordsburn park to consume. Incidents of antisocial behaviour which have resulted from this include vandalism, fires, graffiti, littering and noise. As part of this joined-up initiative, wardens from Crawfordsburn Country Park will also be confiscating alcohol that is brought into the park.
    For further information contact Translink on 028 90 66 66 30.

I would imagine all of them. They don't have different rules for different services, do they>

You can bring a few drinks with you onto the train, just remember to keep the noise to an acceptable level and tidy up after yourself when you're getting off. Myself and a few mates had a few cans on the train a while back and got no bother once we told/showed the inspector that we had a 'bin bag' and were throwing the empty cans into it and took it with us off the train.

Hows about not drinking booze for the duration of your journey?

    Just a thought.

Maybe he meant soft drinks. Can't be anything against them so probably

I actually think they do have different rules for different services, in my experience anyway. I took a train to Carlow for the weekend (although this was about 4 years ago now) and on the way down we had a few cans, the inspector stopped and chatted to us for a while, didn't even mention the cans (the table was covered in them, they were not hidden in the slightest LOL). However, Sunday evening on the way home, the same inspector came over to us, asked us how the weekend was and politely asked us to put away the cans and stop drinking as this was the 'family friendly service' and a non-drinking service??

Yes you can except on Sundays....just hide them under the table ..

    In theory absolutely nothing.

In practise customers travelling on many routes suffer nightmare journeys with boorish tits who appear to think they're travelling to Killarney on Jay-Z's tour bus.

I didn't ask what's wrong with being drunk and disorderly - that's obvious - I asked what was wrong with having a drink?

Ah yeah, them were the days surely.

6 warm cans of smithwicks and about ten fags would get you to Dublin.

Yes and indeed I did on a number of occasions by smoking said fags in an amusing manner, after which I passed around my cap and received alms.

I'd often have a few quiet cans on the train on the way to a holiday/weekend away. A great way to warm up for the night, and makes the trip much more pleasant. You have to drink enough that you get a light buzz going to see you through the bit between arriving at the station and checking into the hotel, but not so much that you're in the "downing it" phase where any travel to a hotel would be a desperate rush between getting the next drink in and finding a toilet.

Wise, you're in need of an Orgasm (Vodka, Amaretto, Triple Sec, White Creme de Cacao, and Light Cream.)

Just not on the train though.

You can eat them on a train. You can eat them on a plane.
I will not eat them, Sam-I-Am. I will not eat green eggs and ham!

Oh, I'm sorry, did you say 'drink'?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 11,631 ✭✭✭✭Hank Scorpio

Can you drink on buses too? I've done it travelling back and forth from college alot, just wondering about the legal stance on it.

Honestly never knew it was legal to drink as much as you want on trains, but then again I rarely use them. I would have thought they'd be issues with people falling down onto the tracks etc getting off if they were in a hoop.

And I bet you sang the Fields of Athenry as the train passed through that town too.

    Didn't you?

    Go on admit it.

Everyone else who gets hammered on the train to Galway sings it. :)
