Hi all, just got a call (while reading posts here) from farmer in "Kerry" (no locations please ;) he has just spotted 2 lads, full cammo'd up with rifles and 1 deer over the shoulder comming down his land , I told him to phone his Garda station (he knows them all) and report A.S.A.P..
It's started early I think for the poaching, I know there isnt a section 42 on this land as we shoot it and are the only permissions allowed on his land.

How can we, as a shooting community stop this?

Dont know the species of deer shot, but reds and sika on this land normally.

    Let you know any updates.

    Regards.

he should have approached them, got a good look at them, then told them there would be serious consequences if they went onto his land again.

then go home and ring the guards and give there descriptions to them

Get the vehicle registration where possibble. They can be traced easier this way and te vehicle seized when they get done as its used for poaching.

They deserve everything they get. Simple as.

hi there, just onto him again, this guy is in his 70's, lives on his own and didnt want to confront the guys as he was worried with the 2 of them with rifles, he didnt see any cars or jeeps parked anywhere, he contacted his friend the garda and he came out but the lads were nowhere to be seen, but the garda will be keeping an eye out from here on in and hope to catch these guys.

Better off for the farmer to just ring the Gardai. That way they're never going to be sure who has reported them. If he was to approach and tell them, he could well face a shed on fire or machinery damaged next time he stepped out his front door.

Lads ye failed to read Medicmans post, the farmer is in his 70's, he cant go running about or walking long distances looking for a car or a jeep yet still keep safe so as the poachers dont see him. He wont want to be seen as he fears for his safety. In my eyes, if the guards are worth there salt they will respond to the farmers call in rapid time and catch the lads red handed!

myself and a couple of shooting buddies will be heading down weekend and help out the farmer, plant ourselves around and stay hidden, if they are spotted, Garda on speed dial, not be seen and just follow and try and catch red handed. wont be taking the law into our own hands so dont worry ;)

thanks for all the replies, I just posted this to let anyone who has permissions in kerry to be on the lookout and let your farmers know what is happening so they can be on the lookout also.

    regards.

I had a similar problem a few weeks ago and it discussed here. Almost identical circumstances and we went to the guards. It took a while and the lads weren't done until they were caught in the act. But they're sorry now:) go to the guards and take it from there. Good luck. This kind of sh!t has to be nipped in the bud asap or they won't stop

once he said he was in his 70's no one said he should approach them?

    ....

in future for them to be caught will you have to wait for them to shoot another deer and catch them with it or can they be approached by gardai and done for poaching without a dead deer?

As far as I know, thet can only be done for trespass, someone here will be more up to date re the law, but I think they need the deer in hand for poaching.

To the best of my knowledge they can't be done for poaching without proof(dead deer in hand) but can be done for 'armed trespass', more serious than trespassing and can result in guns seized

this is happening every week in kerry. got the same phone call at 6.30am two weeks ago. a farmer i have permission from see a jeep on his lane he was worried someone was at his sheep then heard a shot. he see 2 lads pulling a deer to the jeep loading up and driving off at speed. i told him to ring the garda when they got out no sign of the jeep. all he could see was the jeep was sliver as it was 400 yards from his house. i v never heard of this happening so early. poaching is getting worse and has to be stopped.

Had a serious problem with lads from Dublin somin out shootin deer that were in our woodland , they shot 3 in 1 night and all they had were .22 magnums . They had no intention of bring the deer with them cos they only had a volswagen passat and the deer were dragged through the woods into a stream leading to our duck pond. I dont shoot deer myself, Id love to get into it though havent an idea how to go about it I only shoot pheasants, duck and vermin .

    • but a deposit on a suitible calliber. (.243 .270 .308 etc) get the serial number and grain bullets. get the form to fill out applying for deer licence
    • get written permissions off farmers including folio numbers and acreage. (more farmers and land the better.
    • send off form.
    • wait to get licence.
    • send off licence for gun.
    • get licence and gun and wait for the season to open

    think that covers it

    beaten to it:o

approach farmers for permissions. in return you can do vermin control for them. the worst they can say is no.

I wonder if they are connected to the "organisation" thats talked about in this thread http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2056063507

brocdubh has by all accounts put alot of time and effort into finding these people and trying to stop them

I dont think its a case of the poachers have started early this year but more like they never stopped:mad:

Well TBH,this wouldn't be beyond the reach of modern covert surveillance technology..Between us ,I'd say a decent quater mount and a few hides could be used to bash up a decoy deer.Set up like in the video near a road or a field, with one micro covert camera giving a good pic of the front of the vechicle and occupants and another long range one at the deer.Rigged up to bluetooth or WLAN broadband signal, sending direct to a recording computor with time and date stamp right back in the NPWS office ,or somones house, whose patch is being poached.Or simply covertly bury the recording system within a area and collect the info once a day /week /etc

If it can be done for illegal dumping. It certainly could be done for poaching! It is effective and clear enough that some courts ,if not all will accept it as hard evidence in dumping cases where putting a human wont work.
Especially for some of the more blatant chacters out there. They would proably empty a box of shells into the deer before they cop somthing might be wrong!!:D
Proably cost about 3grand with all bells and whistles to put together.
