Do you have a Japanese machine Andrew, or an ahem 'special' one?

Special ones are the way forward for use in cabinets - I should know :pac:

I just had a trouser problem. Two packets just arrived from Japan, packed with SHMUP loveliness and my PSP arrived! Pics to follow. :)

What would a 'special one' set you back? Don't care on condition, could have been kept in a toilet for all I care. So long as you can throw an NTSC-J disc in and play it that's all I want.

I think it depends on the chipset and whether it comes with a HDD etc. Not really sure on the different setups you can get. Either way, it's quite a bit cheaper than importing a new one from play-asia I reckon.

straight answer ? €130 for my one. didn't include a HD. Downside is, they are in limited numbers now, so might be hard to find one. Checkout console modding section (of Enternow fame) and go from there.

These are jtagged consoles we're talking about right? Basically standard 360's with a modified dash (digital signature checks removed) so you can play any region disc, use any hard drive you want, or play games direct from hard drive if you so wish, amongst other things.

The console needs to be dash 7371 or lower in order to jtag it, which is why they're getting kinda scarce these days. Obviously they will need to be kept away from XBL, & if you so wish you can also have an internal sata mod done. What this means is the standard dvd drive is removed, & in its place goes a 3.5" hdd of any capacity. You have usb/ftp access for content, & say goodbye to loading times.

    Here's one of mine

I'm not sure if anyone asked/posted this:

Are there any good schmups for psp?

    Good shmups, crappy controls!

Most of them are imports. You can get the Parodius and Gradius collections - all terrific games. There's Darius Burst, which is a new entry in the series in purty widescreen. But be warned - the controls are really badly compromised! If you don't mind, they're worth a gander.

The Gradius, Parodius and Salamander collections would be the best.

    DoDonPachi Resurrection region free: http://www.siliconera.com/2011/08/25/dodonpachi-resurrection-european-release-to-be-region-free/

Oh: that's right. We don't have to give a **** anymore.

    Huzzah!

    I guess.

Where would a person find a pre modded xbox 360 for sale like that one.
It would be perfect for my cab to play imports and what not.

Or is it still a bit legally dodgy to get them?

    :)

Yep! There's stacks of em! I have Darius Burst and the PC Engine Soldier and Ginga Ojousama Densetsu Collections in the post to me as I type this.

Gradius, Parodius etc are all there. Lots of fun SHMUP action to be had for everyone. :)

There's nothing illegal in itself about a jtagged console, its what they can do with a bit more work that brings legalities into it. Much the same as a bread knife in that respect :p

Our good cmods had the open mindedness to allow me run a trial thread, where users can buy & sell modified consoles (within set limits). So if you want to keep an eye here, they come up regular enough so far - http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2056209509

Finding one that has the internal 3.5" mod done will be rarer again, but that can always be done at a later stage. Getting a jtagged console, or at least an exploitable one is the hard bit. There's no real essential need to have the internal drive mod done, but it does allow better cooling of the gpu, the data is on the sata bus & not the usb bus so loading will be faster, the drive will be powered by the console (no need for an external psu), & its basically an an all in one box solution. As I said, get getting the jtag comes first, the mod can always be done later on.

Cheers. I see someone has a Xbox 360 slim up there. I didn't think you could mod that one.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 5,328 ✭✭✭Pyongyang

I think the slim is doable now is it not? I'm looking at an Asian 360 now. Apparently they play NTSC-J (99.95) and PAL so it's like having a multi-region XBOX and a UK power supply!

Might be worth sourcing a Japan insider if not, seeing as you can get a slim there now for €80.

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,166 ✭✭✭ondafly

that slim has a modified dvd drive - so can play backups. Don't think its running a jtag exploit though ?

I think its also fair to say, that those of us with these in cabinets, is more for the fact we can install games onto the HD , and not having to open the cab up constantly when changing/swapping discs, but also the benefit of being able to purchase imports, without requiring another xbox !

Exactly, the slims can have the firmware on the dvd replaced with custom firmware...this won't change the region of the console, but it will allow the obvious. Your also still restriced to MS hard-drives, & only 16GB external drives.

The jtag is a different mod altogether. Its essentially total control over the console, multi-region, any hard drive etc etc. To mirror ondafly, if your gonna want a 360 in your cab, a jtag is really the only way to go if yo uwant to avoid changing discs etc.

  • Registered Users Posts: 8,848 ✭✭✭Steve X2

Cheers guys, Jtag it is for me so.

I had a few older 360's around that I thought were ok to be modded but they all have the newer firmware (must have updated them at some stage).

I suppose its somewhat relevent, but a new jtag method/procedure has been discovered...works on all recent dashboards & consoles...including slims  Might want to rethink your plans Steve, a slim would be betrter suited to life in a cab with its lower heat generation.

The hack is brand new, & looks like there's a small pcb called a c-mod needed too...but in theory there's no reason why they can't be sata modded too.

That's great news! Time to plan an appointment with The Doc. :D

Actually, this new method for the Slim, will it eventually allow XBL access or will it still require keeping the console disconnected?

I'm still toying with ideas for what to do to play NTSC-J games. Nice to see a new avenue though!

Well at the moment it will only allow application access for stuff designed with xlib, so no running your legitimate backups (as if there is such a thing ) just yet. It'll happen sooner or later though, so yeah, nice to see I guess.

XBL will be as locked down as ever, & rightly so. Modified consoles & retail consoles just don't mix, especially when folks are paying for a legit service...its just too big a bite of the pie in my books :)

Very interesting. Do you thing it could be soon enough before current jtag functionality is a reality on slims?

  • Registered Users Posts: 8,848 ✭✭✭Steve X2

That would be great if I could use a slim inside.

I have one at the moment and they are so quiet and don't get nearly as hot as the older style. I've been running my slim all day hooked up to the candy with a few fighters playing and it's still fairly cool.

Inside the 360 case it's 45°C and the outer shell is 21°C so that's fairly good for a 360 that's been running for 10 hours(that's game time and not just idle on the dashboard). I used a good laser thermometer so the temps are accurate.

Basically what I want is a 360 that I can install my games onto without the need to have the disc in and for it to be region free. I don't really care so much if it plays "backups" as any games I'll be running in the cab will be ones I've bought anyway.

Oh my God you lucky thing! I have Ketsui too (in preparation for an NTSC-J XBOX 360), but not the extra documentation. I hate you! (In the platonic sense of course).

As for Raiden IV, well, what needs to be said other than a hearty congratulations and a manly, yet not too overbearing, handshake to thee. Well done! :)

Have you considered adding to the Raiden collection you've started now? Maybe Raiden DX? That's a chunky one, well worth the few bob.

In other dirty SHMUP notifications, some packages arrived for me today. A couple of cheeky ones bustling about in those I hope. Photos tonight.

And in final peddled top shelf SHMUP smut, I just put my order in for a MAK Strike Supergun to go with my MVS-1A. Toying with getting an LVK8000 too for HDMI output from my PSP>TV. We'll see...

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 5,328 ✭✭✭Pyongyang

Sorry but I have to post again to reiterate just how gorgeous that Ketsui pamphlet is and how bloody envious I am! Congratulations mate. A lovely purchase. :)

  • Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 10,104 Mod ✭✭✭✭Andrew76

Hehe cheers dude. Must have a look to see if there's an English translation of it somewhere online. Will look into Raiden DX as I'm not familiar with that one. Would love an original Raiden II but no way am I going to rotate my monitor for it.

Raiden DX isn't so much a new game as an expanded version of Raiden 2. There's a training stage and an expert mode. If you have a modded PS1 there was a Japanese release of it.
