I really love In The Hunt. The Saturn one is great, it's just sometimes the slowdown gets a bit worse than it should unfortunately. Still, totally playable.

I'll get an arcade board of that one of these days :)

Have you ever played Gunforce 2? Another fantastic pre Metal Slug game by Irem.

In The Hunt is a real gem, love that game. As do I love Einhander, both cracking games. I've an NTSC-J Einhander but no copy of In The Hunt. Wish list! :)

In other SHMUP smutty news, I just read about this. I'm almost tempted to go for a 3DS. Just a tiny bit more convincing and I'll hop on board I think.

Imagine Darius Burst or Axelay on the 3DS for example! *wibble* :o

    @Pyongyang
Galaga Legions is coming out in a few weeks also so thats at least 2 shmuppies coming out on 3DS.

Omega Five was due on 3DS but Konami cancelled it when they took over Hudson. Such a shame. Still on XBLA though.

I'm torn, I'd like to try a 3DS after such a huge price drop but I reckon a wait until nearer Christmas will do the trick. Grab a bundle then or buy a Vita. Depends on who has the best collection of SHMUPS. :)

well since they're going cheap just get a 3DS and by Christmas when Vita comes out you'll have enough money to get one of those also, just don't let Mrs Pyongyany aka Da Nang see you with too much shiny goodness or she'll kick your ass:pac:

Don't suppose there's an online form I can fill in to reserve myself a bed at the Mater this Christmas is there? :pac:

Yes but the bed you reserve will be in a corridor with several incontinant drunk people so you're better off letting her finish you off. Maybe buy her a pick axe handle for Christmas to help things along:pac:

I'll probably get banned from this thread but that video makes the game look a bit meh tbh, Mario Galaxy the Shmup without the innovation.

Hey is there any likelihood of Cave releasing region free versions of it's NSTC-J 360 shmups do you reckon?

@Pyong: Wireless PC-E pad here incase you're interested. Some other nice bits too.

VERY doubtful given their projections for the coming year. :(

Thanks for the link, tempted by those wireless pads but I do love my XE-1 HE Pro stick!

Have you got Mushihimesama Futari 1.5? You can get the platinum version on Play-asia for about €30 delivered. It's region free.

Absolutely loving it. I'd imagine you'll really like it too.

Haven't got it but heard it was region free alright. I'm just lamenting not going for this Cave bundle since I'm getting an inkling for this shmup lark now. For all the games and 360 £600 seemed like a great price. :(

Warning to Pyong - get a cold shower running before you click that link (although you've prob already seen it). :pac:

Now that, is what the 3DS is sorely lacking. The game itself may look mediocre Andrew, but take it from me (a launch day shmuck)...it shines bright in amongst the existing 15 year old games lineup for the 3DS

Lol that's a pretty damning statement for the machine. :pac:
Ah yeah I can appreciate it's something to be applauded if it's new IP for the machine alright. I just thought it looked a wee bit boring slowly going round a tiny planet shooting stuff, just a short clip I guess.
Even with this price cut and rehashing of Mario titles later this year, I'll be sticking with my DS Lite & R4 for my Ninty fix. ;)

Wise man :) The potential of the machine is massive, I can't help but feel its not only a blow to the 3DS, but to 3D in general. Walking around in Zelda, the sense of perception is jaw dropping, the cutscenes almost make you flinch with things heading for you.

I do wonder what a proper shmup, or fps would be like on it. If Nintendo carry on neglecting it though we may never see :(

I get that James May 'fizz' when I think of the 3DS SHMUP possibilities. Darius Burst being just one of them.

Imagine a sequel to Einhander... or Deathsmiles III even! Adding depth to the game alone by utilizing the exact tools 3DS has to offer could pave the way for a whole new SHMUP niche, a new way of playing!

...but it won't happen will it?

Where's the imagination? The risk taking? The new frontiers of gaming?

There are none. It's just remakes and rehashes. I think that 3DS SHMUP title has serious potential. It looks risky but that's the point. It'll probably be brilliant.

...and it'll probably never see an NTSC-U or PAL release.

Erm, the Nano Assault game just looks like a much crapper version of the nearly five years old Super Stardust :pac:

True, but when the below is a selling point of a cutting edge machine, I'll take crapper versions anyday

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,041 ✭✭✭pdbhp

SuperMario Land in 34 minutes, garbage I can (could) blast through that game in 25 minutes and less if I had the urge. The world record is 19' 22" tried beating it and couldn't get within 7 minutes of it:(

Is that your one? Oh right its not out yet :p Plus if its anything like its little brother, it'll take an exploit for it to see its potential. ALSO, its marketed as a social network tool for gamers...the very thing I detest:

Oh look, my friend in bolivia just put his Vita on charge.
Oh look, that person who walked right past me has a Vita.
Oh look, this bunch of people is playing xyz, I'll join in.

Will social network gaming ever just fugg off, its sad! :D

I paid for a PS3, a Wii, a Jaguar, & numerous other disappointments though...I just find social network gaming a bit, sad. I'm last of the old school, a joypad, a tv, a console, & a solid game is all I ask! What other people within 200ft of me are doing at that point, is of little or no concern :)

Lol, tell me about it. If you really wanna slag me off, I havn't the first clue what strretpass, spotpass, or any of that is...literally zero interest in it. This may sound cold, but I'd rather play quality games on the 3DS/Vita than concern myself with other players activities...granted on a public internet gaming forum I do have my asbestos suit on after posting that :p

Social gaming is good when it's done right. I'd stand by Xbox Live being the finest example - the leaderboard obsessions of Geometry Wars or NFS: Hot Pursuit are endlessly addictive. It's nice to be able to see how you're measuring up to other players.

3DS stuff I'd agree seems a bit pointless. All these 'metagames' and stuff. Sure, it's nice on one hand to still be 'playing' even when you're not if the rewards are interesting enough. But having seen a friend obsessing over streetpass hits, I honestly just fail to see the attraction in it myself.

I was kinda aiming that more at 3DS type stuff really, the success of XBL & PSN speak for themselves. That mobile crap though where it involves people on the streets, way over my head.

Also seems this Vita dev agrees with some sentiments mentioned here lately regards ios/android... http://www.tomsguide.com/us/PlayStation-Vita-Handheld-Lyle-Hall-Matthew-Seymour,news-12174.html

Streetpass has zero use unless you're walk commuting through a really heavily populated area every day.

I do, and there's a nice little buzz when you take your 3DS out to find the green light on to signify a hit - then using said person to help you along in that mini streetpass quest thing.

And this is coming from someone who also normally has zero interest in social gaming and hates facebook :pac:
