IRL i don't see too many people performing these two movements. But it seems like they are spoken about alot on here.

So who does and who doesn't do them?

I don't deadlift well hardly ever anyway. I never really liked them doing them a heavy set of five is just hard f'ing work and well we can't be having hard work! Also I'm just not very good at them and I usually ignore stuff I'm bad at. The occasional triple was all I could muster the will power for. I did actually get to like doing heavy singles to triples when I started using a belt but nowadays I'm weightlifting and they aren't in my program.

I think you can get away without deadlifts as long as you have other pulls in your program but you gotta squat!!

I used to a lot but not anymore I'm mainly concentrating on cardio and upper body

    Yes to both

How can you not love deadlifting!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 183 ✭✭Joeyjoejoe83

I don't want to do them but they are necessary for strength training. I worry about the damage they are doing to my back, maybe not now but in years to come.

Yes to both, they're the ultimate exercises and sadly I don't see many people doing them either- in my gym (I won't say where exactly, but it's huge, probably with thousands of members) there's only one- ONE- squat rack!

Deadlifts are the sex though- proper technique coupled with some stretching completely cured my of near-crippling lower back pain. I've been converted!

    Yup.

If you do them with proper form they're more likely to prevent back issues in years to come.

Since I began doing deadlifts a few years ago I never get a sore back anymore (excepting the DOMS after break from them).

This is partly true&false.Deadlifting is an easy movement to screw yerself up.

I do know a few people who have never lifted in their life, they suffer with their backs niggling injurys ...I always thought a bit of dl would help them but its the hardest thing to introduce to a non gym goer.

I do. They are just about all i do in the gym tbh.. I tried benching before, it didnt end well :P

    I don't deadlift.
I squat (using a smith machine - no rack in my gym) I ****ing hate squats. Still do them though.

Agreed. It can help a lot, but good form is difficult to learn and without it you can do yourself some damage.

I was lucky somewhat in that it clicked fast for me... squats however I'm still working on (and probably will perpetually be until I can afford to pay someone in the know to help me sort it out).

neither, will introduce squats soon, then maybe deadlift at some stage, seems a bit daunting to a weights noob

My back squat is appalling. Asthma effects it more nowadays, that and thrusters. Sticking it out though. Like yer man says.......

....there is only stronger and weaker.

Yes to both, but really like dead lifting day, which just so happens to be today in a few minutes :)

    yes to both

love my deadlifting days. I've improved so much in past 3 months its unreal.

squats I like less, but mainly because I've had a knee issue for a year now which i've only recently got cleared up (fingers crossed!) and its been holding me back.

Yes to both. Squats going well lately, deadlifts aren't. Think I had an epiphany with the latter today though. Only time will tell.

I was deadlifting 2 x bodyweight up until a month or so ago, but had to stop as I crippled my back twice, and my form is always perfect. I just think some people can't do it. Squatting is fine though but I can't take the risks with deadlifting anymore, life is too short to be crippled!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,025 ✭✭✭d'Oracle

I haven't deadlifted in so long I could nearly say no.

    But yes, I do both.

  • Squat every session (3 a week).

    Deadlift every second session.

Deadlifts moving very slowly though, Have trouble with the grip to be honest!

I like how much I can "feel" where I trained the next day when doing them tbh.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15 wing1004

Both. I only stared weight lifting 4 weeks a go, both going well so far.

I dont do either but I would like to give them a go.

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 18,518 Mod ✭✭✭✭DM_7

    I do.

But not heavy weights - heavy enough for me though!

I don't bother with one rep max lifts.

Now I think of it, I only see a small percentage of people doing dead-lifts or squats in the gym I go too.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,874 ✭✭✭deadlybuzzman

God yes-squats on a monday and deads on a friday. Deadlifts are the only lift i do currently that Im happy(ish) with. even the big lads notice when Im doing my top set.

A fair few deadlift in my gym, more than squat but then we only have 1 rack

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,829 ✭✭✭TommyKnocker

I am the only person that squats and deaflifts in my gym....

......But as I workout in my garage, I suppose that is to be expected :D:D:D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 26 tyuis

    Yes to both.

I used to despise both techniques but it is strange how persistence and good form can change the results.

Much happier with my squat ( when my knee doesn't click ) but nothing better than feeling flat out after a tough Deadlift session. BTW, any of you guys have any ideas on improving grip for the deadlift? Some days, I feel like I'm going to leave a finger or two behind.

I like the leg press and deadlift on the smith machine cos they're safer.

General mobility work is probably more important, but I'm sure deadlifting helps.

That's the only reason I do them....

    Both for me.

I thought DL form is surely pretty hard to get wrong compared to squat or even bench.
Squat = DL for me. Maybe since I do squats far more often.
I need to start using some kind of grip aid or do something to improve my grip. Moar DLs might just be crazy enough to work.

But yeah I find deadlifting pretty satisfying. Moving bigger weights is always nice.

Only issue I have with them, like I was talking about with someone in the gym today; when I do something basically just running like playing football, my lower back is the first place to get fatigued as ****. I guess the low rep range stuff I've been exclusively doing for DLs isn't conducive to 1hr+ of endurance-y stuff.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 501 ✭✭✭DL Saint

    Yes to both, love'em :D

Used to do quite a bit of cycling, so I have built up alot of leg strength from it and can therefore squat heavy, ass to floor.

Deadlifting takes a bit of work to get to a good weight at, but I'm making progress.

Re my gym: 1 squat rack and although I do see a fair few squatting, I'm never waiting on the rack. On the other hand 3 olympic bars and last monday walked into the gym to find all three being used by people for deadlifting, seems a popular one alright.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,032 ✭✭✭dave80

Deads Monday, bench Wednesday, squats Friday and press Saturday. All wit a few other exercises tat don't mean sh*t!

Look at core stability and anti-rotational stuff too. If your midline stability isn't good your lower back has to take over to stabilise and resist the rotational forces, and since it's probably a bit fatigued from lifting already, it ends up even worse off.

i squat three times a week dead once and run three times
