Yes UPC are going to have even more ads with the dumbo and his parents.

In the new ads they are going to introduce the family cat and explain that nine out of ten cats prefer UPC.:D

Some sort of expansion of cable coverage would be nice, though I won't be hopeful for that..

Announced sale of UPC to MMO2

No word of that anywhere on the web, seems rather unlikely, is there even an mmo2 anymore?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 425 ✭✭barrackali

I highly doubt that any sale is in the pipeline, more likely it will be wider availability of higher speed products at lower prices and more HD channels.

Well, in my case the availability of Freesat and Saorview means UPC is ditched. Two of my friends have followed suit. Thats 3 less UPC subs ........

MMO2 haven't existed since 2005 when Telefónica took them over. That poster appears to have been banned anyway so think it's safe to disregard that as rubbish :)

I don't have a link to the press conf story because it came from a press release from UPC's PR company. I could post it here if you think it's a cod. For the non paranoid there is indeed an announcement coming that the pree release describes as "significant".

An expansion of cable services to replace mmds service would be great. But that probably wont happen.
As long as they dont announce a price hike with whatever the big announcement is..... :)

Still can't see how converting RTE stations to digital represents a threat to UPC. You talk about the 'availability' of Saorview, couldn't you get the Irish channels on analog before DTT?

The threat is the cocktail of 'Saorview' offering more 'RTE' channels (and 3e) for 'Free' , mixed with the growing realisation of viewers that the other 'essential' channels - BBC's , all the ITV's and Channel 4/4E etc are available for free .

In a recession hit economy this is a very real threat to UPC.

VOD / HD is not going to remove this threat, add the customer relation issues and UPC have problems.

Will the UPC press conference solve all these problems - roll on the 5th May

Saorview & Freesat isn't as big a threat to UPC as you might think. A large portion of apartment dwellers have restrictive covenants in their leases prohibiting satellite dishes. Some apartment dwellers won't get a strong enough signal for DTT from rabbit's ears. And Saorview & Freesat aren't as free as their name might suggest. True, there's no ongoing cost, but there's an initial investment of about €500 which will get you the best part of two years worth of UPC's basic package. (Indeed I would think UPC's own basic package is really their own competition - people downgrading to save money).

It will be interesting to see what this is. Sky Atlantic and some other new channels would be nice but hardly merit an entire press conference. I would suggest some sort of re-organising of their pricing strategy perhaps?

i wonder if they are announcing analog switch off

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,317 ✭✭✭gavmcg92

Why is everyone jumping to the conclusion that it is going to be about UPC's digital service. I suggest that it could be a bump in all of the consumer broadband speeds by 5mbps or the introduction of a higher speed.

Is it too late for it to be a public apology about the loss of the ITV channels from their network? :p

    dunworth1 wrote: »

Doubt it - as per their own website updated 29.03.11 - no plans to switch off analog.

Also agree with other postings - I doubt UPC are calling a press conference just to announce new digital channels - no matter what way you cut it the replacements will be inferior to ITV 2/3/4

Enhancement to the digital services (which are due very soon...) with VOD & additional HD channels to compliment it is my guess

Yes, but now I have a Freeview HD box I can pause live TV, watch one and record one, etc etc.

I was also "gutted" I couldnt get 3e on analog, now I can:rolleyes: (This bit is a joke):D

Does anyone know where and what time this press conference will be held? I'd be interested in a liveblog as I'd imagine UPC wouldn't stream it. I know the team over at thejournal do tweet and blog press events, they might be interested in covering this?

Is TV really that important in our lives? Let's keep this in proportion.

    :)

The non cabled areas of Donabate (old NTL MMDS system, DVB-C I think), has been cabled over the last copule of months, started in Dec 2010, by KN, see http://www.knnetworkservices.com/projects/upc-rebuild/ for information (Talked to the guys doing the cabling, and they did not expect the service to be operational for about 4-6 months). I've also seen them in other locations in north County Dublin. Our estate has been cabled up the the entrance, they have yet to cable the road.

Have contacted UPC for a completion date, but the Customer Centre naturally knows nothing about this yet. They have called me back each month, as promised, to give me an update, but HD, BB and voice are not yet available in my area, just good old MMDS (and Freesat and Saorview of course.)

It's more then TV. This is a press conference from a major digital player, who don't have press conferences. Something big is happening. The fact we've some 3 pages here speculating shows there is some interest.

I'm interested in media, broadcasting, technology, broadband etc. This is more then TV.

Cough Cough eh hello this is UPC who regarding tv anyway are miles behind everybody. So hardly important. Still have a red button for years that does nothing :mad::mad:

What do you want it to do? If you want BBC or Sky red button functionality then the BBC and Sky will have to rewrite their software to run on the UPC platform. The BBC are unlikely to do this for such a small (foreign) market, and as for Sky, well ...

I think it will be the introduction of RTE Player. RTE seem to be pushing this service more and more. I think the recent intro of the service onto the PS3 shows they want the service to be more widespread.

Queue UPC having a press conference announcing this as coming soon (most likely months/years away!)... When it does finally arrive it will be buggy and badly implemented, they will push out irregular updates that attempt to fix the problem but nothing will be solved. Meanwhile they will heavily advertise the service through every possible outlet.

Throw in a few more HD channels that are most likely FTA anyway and that will be it.

Thats what Im expecting them to announce... Anything more will be a surprise...Anything less will just be typical UPC.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,031 ✭✭✭patrickmooney

Yes RTE player does look possible. RTE did say last week they were going to expand onto other platforms this year including iOS devices. It might be a tie up with RTE in general for all their saorview channels, digital teletext and RTE Player. That would be nice.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,865 ✭✭✭Infoanon

    To add to my theory that replacement channels for the lose of ITV is not the purpose of the press call;

New channels coming very soon has now become 'we are working hard to bring new channels to our customers. We don't have a date for new ch. just yet'.

Does not bode well - some promos due soon for MGM so I assume 'very soon' for MGM is 8 mths after it was first announced.

Only a week to go but would not hold my breath........
