I don't know Barry in the slightest. He could be a complete dick or a really nice guy. He's probably both as most of us are from time to time. But one thing is certain he would have put his heart and soul into his facillity and to see it close would be a crushing blow to anybody! I imagine the stress would have been enormous. Sleepless nights etc, to then kick the guy when he is down is absolutely horrendous. Isint there enough negativity in this country without this kinda tripe!!
Give the guy a break. Hope the new place is a storming success.

its a shame to see anyones business go under, at any time. I can think of at least a dozen lads who wanted to join your gym and more after total fitness closed. Unfortunately they went to the gym 200 yards away because of your high prices. The membership on informed performance was ridiculous. I dont know how it expected to survive with such price demands. It's funny because when I got the tour, an American guy told me that informed performance would only be taking so many members and then closing the books!! I thought this was abit cocky at the time considering the economic climate, turns out it was.

this trend is titled "new mma gym", so why are you going off track ? , anyway back on track I hope the new gym goes well and adds to the on-going improving MMA scene in Ireland.

If membership was for using both the gym and mma classes it probably wasn't that expensive for people using both, in any case it's closed now so blasting them at this point helps no one.

    Chiefbrody,

    Here's what IP offered:
    - On the martial arts side of things there was top quality instruction in BJJ, Muay Thai and MMA. There was nearly thirty hours per week of classes as well as several hours set aside for open mat.
-There were regular seminars from outside instructors from all over the world like Rafa Mendes, Abmar Barbosa and Robert Drysdale
    - On the strength and conditioning you received individual attention from a brilliant strength and conditioning coach with tailored strength, conditioning and repitition sessions to suit your needs.

What more would you like or expect to receive for your membership fee?
How much are you paying at the moment?
How many mat hours do you get per week?
How much do you spend on alcohol or some other non essential per month?

    As for Kyuzo i forsee:
-Top quality instruction in BJJ, MMA and Muay Thai
-Seminars from world class BJJ athletes like Abmar Barbosa, Robert Drysdale and others
-Teams competing regularly in top BJJ, MMA and Muay Thai events

Why dont you pop along and try it out?

    Regards,
    Tom

In fairness Barry's business is just changing and not gone!

in saying that his results speak for themselves so people will pay to train with a team with a proven track record, you should train with them-he usually does a free session for new people to try it out.

no need, im not interested in the BJJ or martial arts side of things. Maybe if you had a couple of different joining tarrifs to allow for weights and cardio members only, this might have gone down a bit better. I was just looking for a decent gym for weights and cardio, IP had that at least, but was too expensive. Dont know where half the defensive idiots here get off assuming im gloating at your loss. its ****, its a pity cos it was a very good set up, just a bit pricey for the times we live in at present, that's the only drawback. only issue was with price full stop.

    Then why are you posting?!

Even at 85 a month, anyone with the slightest idea about S&C knew what a good deal you were getting with Will on board. If you don’t appreciate that, or didn’t want that in a gym, that’s fair enough. I only trained at IP for 4 months, but it was never a place where someone walked in the door and bogged off and did their own thing. They were getting personalized coaching and instruction from one of the country’s top S&C coaches and access to equipment no one else/very few in Ireland had.

IP was a bargain in the same way spending 12 euro to go to Shanahan’s instead of 8 to go to MaccyD’s is a bargain. You’re getting the same stuff, but the quality and level of service is infinitely higher.

Oh yeah, and then there was all the MA stuff too…

now i have to be careful what I say here, cos if i hurt your feelings ill bet i'll be banned perhaps. If i want to post an opinon as long as its not abusive then ill do so, get that clear. dont go winging cos you dont like it. I was told that IP was not to be perceived as an exclusive MMA or athletes only gym, it was priced as such however. Great, I'm delighted for ya if you loved it, more power to you all. the simple fact is that it's not there anymore because why?????? if it's so great???? it seemed to be flying when they were handing out adverts outside total fitness and guys like you were bashing other gyms. IP was a good gym, maybe the new one will be more realistic and base it's model on a more conservative club rather than a specialised high priced one,!!. simple laws of adapting to survive. Hope your new gym does well Barry, perhaps the MMa side will flourish for ya.

Bingo. I like the way the mods here do exactly what I want 
If i want to post an opinon as long as its not abusive then ill do so, get that clear.

Me too, and if in my opinion I think you’re wrong, which I do, then I’ll tell you. Clear?
dont go winging cos you dont like it.

I’m ‘whinging’ at your misrepresentation of what you were getting for your money.
I was told that IP was not to be perceived as an exclusive MMA or athletes only gym, it was priced as such however.

It was priced based on the service you received. Westwood is as expensive, and you get no MA coaching or free personal training. Crossfit Ireland is SIGNIFICANTLY more expensive than IP ever was, so is CF Dublin, Combat Workshop, ISI and a tonne of other great gyms in Dublin where you get more personal attention from knowledgeable folk who’ve spent time and money getting to the level they’re at education wise.

They all have different target markets. You’re basically bashing IP because it’s not what YOU wanted to to be? That’s like me walking into Shanahan’s and complaining about being charged for a steak from a waiter, when I wanted a burger in a wrapper, and expecting them to change what they do and their pricing to suit me. And then complaining because the MaccyD burger isn’t as nice or well present as my plate of cow. Ridiculous.
Great, I'm delighted for ya if you loved it, more power to you all. the simple fact is that it's not there anymore because why?????? if it's so great????

Why isn’t it here? Maybe you can shed some light on that for us? Because as far as I’m concerned I know the reasons, and you’re jumping to conclusions without any facts to support them. Oh, and you’re also wrong.
it seemed to be flying when they were handing out adverts outside total fitness and guys like you were bashing other gyms. IP was a good gym

It was a good gym. Who are ‘guys like me’? Should they not have been advertising?
maybe the new one will be more realistic and base it's model on a more conservative club rather than a specialised high priced one,!!.

Barry’s new gym is an MMA gym. It’s like me closing my gents tailors and opening a sports shop. Similar things, but different services and products. With different pricing structures to match. Your grasp of what happened in IP and what will happen in Kyuzo’s awful, I’m trying to use examples here because ya don’t really seem to ‘get’ what IP was. It wasn’t just a warehouse packed with gym equipment for you to play about and make no progress on.
simple laws of adapting to survive.

Why do you think anyone involved had to adapt to ‘survive’?

Sometimes its easier to drag yourself along to train if you are training for something. If you fancy trying BJJ at some point, come along. Its amazing for cardio fitness and you'll see strengths gains too. Barry (the owner operator of Kyuzo gym) has set different tarriffs for a monthly rate, a day class rate as well as an open mat drop in rate (http://kyuzogym.com/membership-details/)

Best of luck in either case

@chiefbrody 85 a month is extremely competitive, your initial posts were very distasteful, and I'm sure you have offended quite a few people here. Also I am sure you have no notion or clue what the circumstances were in relation to the gym closing. The amount of love that went into that business.

Sometimes I'm amazed at people's arguments, when your wrong or out of place just accept it.

@Barry, best of luck man, your contribution to the Irish mma/bjj scene speaks for itself, no one remembers haters. Best of luck with the new gym bro.

I don't have the mental capacity to form a cohesive argument so I'll resort to name calling instead.

I'm glad IP was too expensive for you

Firstly, best of luck Barry with your new venture. I hope it goes well for you.

Secondly, no more nonsense in this thread, or more bannings will surely follow.

I do have beef with Barry and Kyuzo... The fact it's not open annoys me immensely. I've seen the progress pics tho and it looks bloody savage!

First of all chiefbrody1974, thank you for your valuable input on the MMA forum.
no need, im not interested in the BJJ or martial arts side of things.
Oh, wait, this is the MMA forum, so obviously you crawled in here not because you were interested in MMA, but because you wanted to give your opinion on something that was stuck in your craw. That's fine I guess since this is the internet.

In any case, I'm not bothered about what's gone before I'm just too excited about the future to care :). How about I offer you a free session in the Kyuzo to make up for the crushing blow of finding out how much IP used to cost when you came in 18 months ago? Don't think I can say fairer than that.

Anyway the builders are still in unfortunately so the gym will now open on Wednesday 4th May for it's first classes. Starting with:

    5pm- teen BJJ
    6pm- Women only MMA
    7pm- Brazilian Jiu Jitsu

We might be able to get in on Monday afternoon too for an open mat for any current members, but for any new members, Wednesday night is the session to go to.

Some photos of the work going on in the new gym are on my facebook, particularly the amazing graffiti work done by one of the lads and his mate.

First roll in the new place with some of the guys! It was in my jeans and a tee but who gives a damn we're in!

Looks like for once the builders are on schedule so we'll be opening on Wednesday as planned. Hope to see some new faces there.

  • Registered Users Posts: 221 ✭✭daveyc21

Sorry to see IP close Barry must pop into the new place when I can get a second free and your more than welcome to check out Ironside at any stage. Can't believe I still havent met you in real life considering how long ago the teamtest days were. Best of luck with the new venture.

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 2,917 ✭✭✭Barry.Oglesby

Thanks Dave, might see you soon.

Well the opening day is here and as is my way I'm going to be running around doing last minute things to make sure the gym can open today. Luckily I have some help.

The builders are still in completing the showers/dressing rooms/reception area but the training area is 100% ready to go, in fact my fighters trained there yesterday. Roll on tonight and beginner BJJ at 7pm!

New website is up and running here www.kyuzogym.com

Thanks everyone for the kind messages of support in the last few weeks and for those who allowed me and my guys to use their gyms and facilities, most notably Andy Ryan and Team Ryano and Mick Burke and Performance Martial Arts, and for the kind offers of training from Coolmine and Rush which we didn't have a chance to take up.

Fair play Barry. Moving gyms is stressful at the best of times as I'm learning.

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 2,917 ✭✭✭Barry.Oglesby

It's a bit like moving house Tim. You pack everything up, there's more of it than you think then you can't find anything when you move because it's all sitting on boxes. Ah no it's great fun really. I can't complain too much. Stress yes but a lot of excitement at seeing something you're building come together, a bit like Lego.

The first session was great tonight.

Had my second session in the new gym last night and was seriously shown how its done by a bunch of pros :) Gym looks great and I'll haul my unfit self down again tonight for another can of whoop-ass... here's hoping I survive!

When the fridge arrives those cans will be cold... :D

Only a week old and the timetable is already out of date :). There's now open BJJ training at 11am-1pm Mon-Thurs. There's usually a couple down every day. Ideal for shiftworkers, students, public servants, those on the scratcher, or those with legitimate time off work.
