Some of you may have seen my post about 2 weeks back, I recently got a moderator fitted to my 223, i think it has me jinxed, i have not got a shot off at a fox since i got it. I sorted the glare problem with a sock after my first night . Now not all my misadventure is down to the moderator.

My rifle holds 3 rounds and has a habit of of jamming when you try to chamber the first round. This caused me, not get a shot off, at a fox that came in to about 50 yards the night before last.(gun is kept well oiled)

Then there is my old friend who will not come over the brow of a hill. I have called him until i was blue in the face. I have circled the hill & he goes around the other side. I have used the remote control on the ucaller & waited for him on top of the hill, all my efforts have ended in frustration

The moderator has added a fair bit of weight and length, i like to sling the rifle on one shoulder but this is no longer possible because it is top heavy with the moderator. Do i need a longer sling? Are those slings where you carry the rifle like a rucksack any good?

I found the same when i had a 26" barrel on my .223 (very top heavy)

    Fox calling is frustrating.

I have seen a fox 4 times on my OWN land in the past 3 weeks and he could be in Shelbourne Park he runs that fast tehsecond the lamp goes on him, Red/amber filter it does not matter, like Forrest Gump, he was ruuuuuuuuuuunin.

In regards to the Jamming & holding only 3 rounds?

Too much Oil is as bad as none in my experience, make sure the basics are covered, all rounds inserted properly.
Swifts load the opposite of most centrefires.
most centrefires load the lip of the base of the round tight to the lip of the previous round.
Give teh feed ramp a rub of a bronze brush to remove any crud build up.
Use a bright torch to Inspect the chamber as you would be surprised what you would miss with the naked eye.

You can also offset teh weight diff buy using a cheekease that holds rounds.
The small add weight may balance it better.

    Failing that a lighter mod

Try pointing the muzzle towards the ground, then chamber the round solidly.

To me, he sounds call shy and wary of the lamp, but not lamp shy if he doesn't run. If he's not killing anything then give him a break, leave him a few weeks then go back and catch him out on his path without calling.

I still sling mine, 26" (I think) barrel with a T8 on the end, just hold onto the sling to stop the rifle swinging back. The other type slings are no good for me as I have a... rucksack on my back.

    Remmie,
What rifle are we talking about - a 700? How old is it?

Cycle a few rounds in and out and note which, if any, is jamming. Have a look at the brass. Are there markings/scratches on the jammed round?

This happened to me - problems cambering, not necessarily the first and it came down to a burr on the ramp that need just a bit of tuning.

Sounds like your spring is too tight.

What Calibre is it that it only holds 3?

Hornets I think in Remmy hold 4, and swifts if I remember correctly.

If you are using a 700 .223 it should hold 5

Its a 700 .223 Tack, It does hold 5 but gun dealers advice was only to load 3 or i would be replacing the spring before too long. To be honest while i am very happy with the rifle, the spring & base plate are sh1t. If you are not careful opening the trap door. The spring flies out & the base plate falls off. Just what you need in the pitch black:rolleyes:

    I knew it!

I'd nearly say I knew where you bought it ;) Load it with 5 and in a week whe will run like a dream!

You'll get the knack of opening the door in time.

Honestly, it's as simple as that.

What happens if you load more than 3? Do you still have the problem?

As Tack said, it sounds like a spring.

I would still get a nice clean round, maybe even polish it so that there are no marks on the bullet or the casing. Then chamber, or try to, and see where there are marks resisting the motion.

Fisma, he is only loading 3 in a 5 shot mag and teh spring is still like new.

Lack of use is all that is wrong with it.

I have NO IDEA why certain Dealers tell fella's to load less than the mag can handle.

    They are pure simple anyway.
If the spring gets soft over several year, give it a slight bend.
    Easy peasy.

I remember being at a clay shoot 10 years ago where a fella (who spoke very well)
Used to blow down the barrels after each detail of clays.
    I'm still scratching my head.
A dealer told him it would help his accuracy.

I did better with a Baikal than he did with his £3000punt shotgun ;)

DON'T ALWAYS LISTEN TO DEALERS. Read up on the subject if you are unsure and ask people who have been around.

And I thought this was something dealers only told people with American accent!:D

tack i have a friend who used to do that after every shot ;) he had a wad get stuck in a shotgun many years before the next shot split the barrel like a bannana skin  he had developed the habit after that can't say that i blamed him either

If you put a piece of electrical tape over the muzzle, you can carry the rifle slung muzzle down. Very common elsewhere. Personally I don't like it quite so well and do the same as John, but it works. I use electrical tape anyway to avoid water, mud, snow and so forth.

Someone on here started a thread here ages ago( nearly sur it was cliveJ) about that problem.

It was an attachment that goes around the butt of the rifle and it clips onto your belt when you have the rifle over your shoulder...it keeps the rifle by your side and upright!

Couldn't do that where I shoot. Gun would end up getting smacked off rocks, buried in ant hills and God knows what else :pac:

    You could patent that!
Tape it up so it won't scratch the rifle.

Then go on Dragons Den ;)
