‘Shōgun’ “Re-Adaptation” With Writer Justin Marks Headed To Production At FX

Hiroyuki Sanada (The Twilight Samurai) and Cosmo Jarvis (Lady Macbeth) have been tapped as two of the three leads in Shōgun, FX’s limited series based on James Clavell’s bestselling novel. Sanada and Jarvis will play the male leads, Yoshii Toranaga and John Blackthorne, respectively, in the project, which tells the story from both a Western and Japanese perspective.

Written by Justin Marks and Rachel Kondo, Shōgun is set in feudal Japan. It charts the collision of two ambitious men from different worlds and a mysterious female samurai: John Blackthorne (Jarvis), a risk-taking English sailor who ends up shipwrecked in Japan, a land whose unfamiliar culture will ultimately redefine him; Lord Toranaga (Sanada), a shrewd, powerful daimyo, at odds with his own dangerous, political rivals; and Lady Mariko, a woman with invaluable skills but dishonorable family ties who must prove her value and allegiance.

The series’ third lead, the role of Lady Mariko, is currently being cast. In the highly rated 1980 Shōgun miniseries, the parts of Blackthorne, Toranaga and Mariko were played by Richard Chamberlain, Toshiro Mifune and Yoko Shimada, respectively

    Faster Pussycat, Kill! Kill!
“I try to think big!’ says Tura Satana’s Varla in Russ Meyer’s cult classic Faster Pussycat, Kill! Kill!, and that’s exactly what Norman Reedus and AMC Studios plan to do.

The Walking Dead star’s bigbaldhead production company and AMC Studios are developing a small-screen series version of Meyer’s 1965 flick starring Satana, Lori Williams, Susan Bernard, Paul Trina, Haji and Stuart Lancaster, I have learned. The project has the full backing of the Meyer estate.

Still in the early stages, the project comes under the two-year first-look deal Reedus and his banner inked with the studio in September last year. Utilizing the movie’s tale of a trio of badass go-go dancers on a cash-fueled rampage through the desert, Faster Pussycat the TV show aims to pay homage to the original but also go beyond the fast cars and karate kicks to home in on the strong female characters and the overturning of cultural norms that was deeper in the bones of the movie.

    The Killing Kind
Sony Pictures Television-backed Eleventh Hour Films has optioned Jane Casey’s novel The Killing Kind and will adapt it into a limited series.

Screenwriters Zara Hayes (Showtrial) and Jonathan Stewart (Meet You In Hell) have been attached to reimagine the book, with the former set to direct.

Published today by HarperCollins, the story centers on a barrister, named Ingrid Lewis, who defends John Webster against stalking charges, only for Webster to turn on her. When a colleague is run down on a busy London road, Lewis is sure she was the intended victim, and Webster claims he is the only one who can protect her from the killer.

Paula Cuddy, creative director at Eleventh Hour Films, said: “The Killing Kind is an exceptional thriller from the brilliant Jane Casey, which delivers the twists, turns and emotion to grip a global TV audience. Ingrid is a compelling protagonist, whose story is most timely as she navigates professional and personal ethics, her journey making us question ‘justice’ in every sense.

Buugger. Only just watched the first two; decent enough start, with intriguing conceit, though does seem a bit 'by the numbers'; each episode with a neat resolution, with a drip-feed of behind-the-scenes nefarious government 'weaponisation'-style plot. Seems interesting enough to finish it though.

Colin Firth to Play Michael Peterson in ‘The Staircase’ Limited Series for HBO Max
Colin Firth will play Michael Peterson in a series adaptation of “The Staircase,” which has been ordered to series at HBO Max.
HBO Max has ordered eight episodes of the limited series, which is based on the docuseries of the same name and various books and reports on the Peterson case. Peterson was accused of murdering his wife, Kathleen, in 2001. He claimed she died after falling down the stairs at their home, but police suspected he bludgeoned her to death and staged the scene to look like an accident. The docuseries was originally released in 2004, with creator Jean-Xavier de Lestrade updating with new information years later. Netflix released it as a 13-episode series in 2018.
Variety exclusively reported that the scripted series was in development back in 2019. “The Staircase” is written and executive produced by showrunners Antonio Campos and Maggie Cohn. The Resort
True-crime love story The Resort, from Palm Springs writer Andy Siara and Mr. Robot creator Sam Esmail, has been ordered at Peacock.

The streamer has handed the series from UCP an eight-part order.

It first emerged in February 2020 that the pair were developing the scripted project at the Universal Studio Group division.

The Resort explores love and the weird things we do in the name of it, encased in an elaborate true-crime conspiracy, with each season set in a unique picturesque vacation destination. The first season takes place at an all-inclusive resort along the Mayan Riviera, when a married couple on the brink of divorce inadvertently becomes embroiled in one of the Yucatan’s most bizarre, unsolved mysteries that, somehow, is part metaphysical detective story, part Indiana Jones-esque adventure, part coming-of-age romance.
