Batman: The Animated Series creator teams with J.J. Abrams for new Dark Knight cartoon
Bruce Timm is returning for a series about the Caped Crusader, alongside Abrams and The Batman director Matt Reeves.

Many Batman fans' prayers are about to be answered. Batman: The Animated Series has long been hailed as a gold standard for adapting the Dark Knight into other media (not least by, well, us here at EW). Now at long last, BTAS creator Bruce Timm is returning to the character.

HBO Max and Cartoon Network announced Wednesday that they have greenlit Batman: Caped Crusader, a new animated series overseen by Timm, The Batman director Matt Reeves, and newly minted DC star producer J.J. Abrams.

Caped Crusader will not be a sequel to BTAS (if you're looking for something like that, check out the recent comic Batman: The Adventures Continue, from series producer Paul Dini), but rather is set to "once again reinvent Batman and his iconic rogue's gallery with sophisticated storytelling, nuanced characters and intense action sequences all set in a visually striking world," per to the announcement.

"We are beyond excited to be working together to bring this character back, to tell engrossing new stories in Gotham City," Timm, Reeves, and Abrams said in a joint statement. "The series will be thrilling, cinematic and evocative of Batman's noir roots, while diving deeper into the psychology of these iconic characters. We cannot wait to share this new world."

I would actually prefer to see a continued evolution of the style of animation seen up to Batman Beyond, that show was way ahead of its time.

    Bloody Women
Synchronicity Films is following up its BBC drama The Cry with another Helen Fitzgerald television adaptation — this time based on her 2009 novel Bloody Women.

The production company has signed up Lorna Martin, the co-creator of Women on the Verge alongside Sharon Horgan, to adapt the novel into an eight-part, darkly comedic thriller. All3Media International is distributing as part of its first-look deal with Synchronicity.

Bloody Women tells the story of 33-year-old Cat Marsden, who on the morning of her wedding is taken to a police station and shown a severed penis. She tries not to laugh but she can’t help herself. On close inspection, she confirms that it almost certainly belongs to her ex, Johnny. She also confirms that she slept with him in the hours before his death, the days leading up to her wedding. What she can’t confirm is whether or not she’s responsible for mutilating and murdering him.

Wednesday Addams has found it's Wednesday Addams
Jenna Ortega (Yes Day, Jane the Virgin) has been tapped for the title role in Wednesday, Tim Burton’s live-action Addams Family series for Netflix focused on the iconic character of Wednesday Addams.

The coming-of-age comedy, written by Smallville creators Al Gough and Miles Millar and to be directed by Burton, is a sleuthing, supernaturally infused mystery charting Wednesday Addams’ (Ortega) years as a student at Nevermore Academy. That’s where she attempts to master her emerging psychic ability, thwart a monstrous killing spree that has terrorized the local town, and solve the supernatural mystery that embroiled her parents 25 years ago — all while navigating her new and very tangled relationships.

The YA series, Wednesday Addams’ first solo vehicle, marks Burton’s first live-action show and his TV directing debut.

Ortega is taking over the role from Christina Ricci, the actress most closely associated the character, who played Wednesday in both feature films, The Addams Family in 1991 and sequel Addams Family Values in 1993.

Christina's old enough to be her mother, so Morticia?

Hope she's as dry as Christina made her.

Hmm, wonder if they'll base it on the Matt Reeves film the same way the Animated Series was based on Tim Burton's film.

    We Own the City
Jon Bernthal, Josh Charles and Jamie Hector have been tapped as the leads of HBO’s We Own This City limited series, from The Wire’s EP David Simon and producer George Pelecanos. Reinaldo Marcus Green (Monsters and Men) is set to direct and executive produce the series, based on Baltimore Sun reporter Justin Fenton’s book We Own This City: A True Story of Crime, Cops and Corruption. Production is set to begin in July.

The six-hour limited series chronicles the rise and fall of the Baltimore Police Department’s Gun Trace Task Force — and the corruption and moral collapse that befell an American city in which the policies of drug prohibition and mass arrest were championed at the expense of actual police work.

Untitled global spy Arnie series that is totally not the True Lies series that was cancelled earlier this year.
Netflix has given an eight-episode series order to an untitled global spy adventure one-hour starring and executive produced by Arnold Schwarzenegger in his first major foray into scripted television.

The streamer landed the Skydance TV-produced hourlong series, also starring Monica Barbaro (Top Gun: Maverick), in a competitive situation last November for development with a script-to-series commitment.

In the series, created by Nick Santora (Jack Reacher; The Fugitive series), when a father (Schwarzenegger) and daughter (Barbaro) learn that they’ve each secretly been working as CIA Operatives for years, they realize their entire relationship has been a lie and they truly don’t know one another at all. Forced to team up as partners, our series tackles universal family dynamics set against a global backdrop of spies, fantastic action and humor.

I prefer to only post positive comments but I cannot resist being negative this time. I hope Timm has the actual creative control here because Abrams name on a project puts me right off. I used to be a big fan but whatever actual imagination Abrams had once is long gone.

I really wish DC would make use of their other characters too.

I have not watched it but couldn’t they just have replaced Clarke’s character with a new one? How many people are now out of work or won’t get a job because of this.

Well considering he created the show and produced it and wrote some of the episodes I would say that is a hard no.

Any actor and writer can be replaced and I imagine neither of those were an issue

The fact that he was a producer that did not step down is probably the reason

It sounds like Earth 1 going from that line. Shame about Painkiller, he has been the best thing on the last season of Black Lightning which The CW have hardly promoted at all this season. Painkiller would make more sense on HBO Max anyway as he kills alot unlike most Arrowverse heroes.
