    Here’s a hot new transatlantic project to start 2021: The Morning Show star Gugu Mbatha-Raw is set to be cast as the lead in a BBC adaptation of JP Delaney’s best-selling psychological thriller The Girl Before.

    Deadline can reveal that 42, the UK production outfit behind Netflix’s The English Game and the Emmy-winning BBC/Netflix animation Watership Down, is behind the four-part BBC One series, which will shoot later this year. The Girl Before was originally optioned for a feature by Universal Pictures in 2015, with Ron Howard attached to direct, but now looks set to make its screen debut on television.....

    Death in Paradise renewed for two more seasons

    BBC One has given Death in Paradise a double renewal, with the show set to return for two more seasons.

    The much-loved hit, set on the French Caribbean island of Guadeloupe, is celebrating its 10th anniversary this January, with the season premiere airing tonight – despite production being delayed by three months done the coronavirus pandemic and subsequently accelerated to ensure filming could complete and viewers could enjoy the show in its usual January slot.

    Marvel’s ‘Moon Knight’ Series Lands Indie Horror Directors Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead

    Marvel Studios’ Disney Plus expansion continues to chug full-steam ahead, with indie horror filmmakers Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead signing on to direct episodes of Marvel’s upcoming series “Moon Knight,” Variety has confirmed.

    Benson and Moorhead join the project alongside director Mohamed Diab (“Clash”) and showrunner Jeremy Slater (“Umbrella Academy”).

    Drama From David E. Kelley Lands Netflix Series Order; Manuel Garcia-Rulfo To Star
    Netflix has given a series order to The Lincoln Lawyer, a drama based on Michael Connelly’s series of bestselling novels, from The Practice and Big Little Lies creator David E. Kelley and A+E Studios.


    This is a new incarnation of the project, which originally was set up at CBS with a series production commitment last season. Manuel Garcia-Rulfo (The Magnificent Seven) has been tapped to play the titular character in the Netflix series as it honors the story’s Latinx origins.

    “I’m excited to announce that after a bit of a journey, Mickey Haller will come to life once again on screen — this time in the TV series adaptation of The Lincoln Lawyer coming to Netflix and starring the wonderful and talented Manuel Garcia-Rulfo,” Connelly said in blog post tied to the pickup.......

    Slumdog Millionaire and Trainspotting helmer Danny Boyle is collaborating with FX on a limited series based on the memoir of Steve Jones, the legendary Sex Pistols guitarist who helped usher in a punk revolution in Britain.

    Boyle will direct and executive produce the six-part series, which is titled Pistol and was created by Moulin Rouge! writer Craig Pearce and is co-written by Frank Cottrell Boyce (24 Hour Party People). Babyteeth actor Toby Wallace stars as Jones, while Game Of Thrones star Maisie Williams has joined the cast as punk icon Jordan.

    Other cast includes Anson Boon (Crawl) as John Lydon, Louis Partridge (Enola Homes) as Sid Vicious, Jacob Slater as Paul Cook, Fabien Frankel (The Serpent) as Glen Matlock, Dylan Llewellyn (Derry Girls) as Wally Nightingale, Sydney Chandler (Don’t Worry Darling) as Chrissie Hynde, and Emma Appleton (The Witcher) as Nancy Spungen.......

    Beau Willimon Adapting Hasbro Board Game ‘Risk’ As TV Series
    Beau Willimon, creator of Netflix’s House of Cards, is overseeing a TV remake of classic board game Risk after signing a first-look deal with Hasbro-owned eOne.

    Willimon, who also created Hulu space drama The First, will write and oversee the development of a series adaptation of the strategy game, which was created by Albert Lamorisse in 1957 and has gone on to become one of the most popular board games in history.

    It comes after Willimon and Jordan Tappis’ production company Westward inked a multi-year deal with The Rookie and Sharp Objects producer eOne.

    It is the latest Hasbro property being developed by eOne after it was acquired by the toy giant in 2019 for around $4B. The company is working on TV and film adaptations of Power Rangers with Jonathan Entwistle, while Deadline revealed that The Clarkson Twins, writers on Amazon’s Wheel of Time, are one of a number of writers working on TV adaptations of Dungeons and Dragons. On the film side, eOne is also working on projects on Hasbro’s Monopoly, with Kevin Hart, Action Man, G.I. Joe and Clue......

    Gotham PD Series at HBO Max Enlists Joe Barton (no the footballer) as New Showrunner

    The upcoming Gotham PD series at HBO Max has found its new showrunner in Joe Barton, Variety has learned.

    Barton takes over as executive producer and showrunner on the untitled series from Terrence Winter, whose exit was reported in November.

    Barton previously created and wrote the BBC Two/Netflix drama series “Giri/Haji.” He also previously wrote the feature film “The Ritual.” Most recently he co-wrote the upcoming feature film “Invasion” starring Riz Ahmed and Octavia Spencer, which will be distributed by Amazon Studios. He is also set to write and executive produce the Netflix drama series “Half Bad,” based on the books by Sally Green.

    Stephen Merchant’s BBC/Amazon Series ‘The Offenders’ Renewed For Second Season

    BBC One and Amazon’s Stephen Merchant series The Offenders has been renewed for a second season before the first has even been shot, executive producer Kenton Allen has revealed.

    In an interview with Deadline, the Big Talk Productions CEO said that the two seasons are being filmed back-to-back in Bristol, southwest England, in an unexpected fillip for the comedy-drama after it was shut down in March 2020 due to the coronavirus pandemic.

    Allen said filming on the six-part series, which will star Christopher Walken, was halted after just 12 days last March, at which point the BBC asked if Merchant would consider writing a second season.

    ‘Utopia Falls’ Showrunner Joseph Mallozzi To Adapt Fantasy Novel ‘Powder Mage’ As TV Series With No Equal Entertainment & Frantic Films

    Joseph Mallozzi, showrunner of Hulu’s sci-fi drama Utopia Falls, is set to adapt Brian McClellan’s fantasy novels Powder Mage for television.

    The writer/producer, who executive produced multiple shows in the Stargate universe, has teamed with Canadian production companies No Equal Entertainment, which makes Laura Vandervoort-fronted Bitten, and Baroness Von Sketch Show producer Frantic Films on the project.

    Mallozzi will write the pilot episode of the one-hour drama, with a view to showrunning a series. He will start with the Promise of Blood book in McClellan’s Powder Mage Universe.

    An adaption of the Powder Mage trilogy will never work unless it has a massive budget, a low cost CGI version would be doing the series a total disservice as it has some very large scale battles and explosions are the focal point of the whole story.

    Yep, it needs a good budget for the many battles and to get across the differing magic systems well. It'd actually suite the animé format. It's no coincidence for example that the gloves they wear are strikingly similar to those worn in 'Fullmetal Alchemist'.

    ‘Queen’s Gambit’ Writer to Adapt Sci-Fi Novel ‘The Sparrow’ for FX

    “Queen’s Gambit” co-creator, director and showrunner Scott Frank is writing every episode of FX’s adaptation of the visionary modern classic, “The Sparrow.” Emmy Award-winning director Johan Renck (“Chernobyl,” “Breaking Bad”) has been tapped to direct the sci-fi project.

    Frank and Renck, along with “Better Call Saul” producer Mark Johnson, will executive produce the limited series based on Mary Doria Russell’s acclaimed magnum opus. “The Sparrow” is being produced by FX Productions.

    “The Sparrow,” published in 1996 by Random House’s imprint Villard, won numerous prestigious literary awards, including the Arthur C. Clarke Award, the Kurd-Laßwitz-Preis and the British Science Fiction Association Award, among others. The book, categorized as a work of speculative fiction, grapples with the potential ethical, philosophical and spiritual issues of humans intermingling with extraterrestrial life, raising questions about humanity itself.

    Julia Child Series Ordered at HBO Max

    HBO Max has given out a series order to the drama based on the life of chef Julia Child.

    “Julia” is inspired by Child’s life and her long-running television series, “The French Chef,” which pioneered the now popular genre of cooking shows. Child will be played by Sarah Lancashire. The series also stars David Hyde Pierce, Brittany Bradford, Fran Kranz, Fiona Glascott, Bebe Neuwirth, Isabella Rossellini, and Jefferson Mays.

    “We are so happy to help bring the incomparable Julia Child back to the small screen, when we need her more than ever,” said Sarah Aubrey, head of original content for HBO Max. “This show’s look into her life, marriage, and trailblazing career as she transformed the way we talk about food is an absolute delight. Our incredible cast and formidable creative team are a recipe for success, and we couldn’t be more excited.”


    HBO Max has given the series an eight-episode order. Chris Keyser is the showrunner and executive producer. 3 Arts Entertainment’s Erwin Stoff and Kimberly Carver will also executive producing along with Charles McDougall, and Daniel Goldfarb. Todd Schulkin is a consulting producer on behalf of The Julia Child Foundation for Gastronomy and the Culinary Arts. Lionsgate will serve as the studio.

    Dungeons & Dragons’ Series Adaptation in the Works From ‘John Wick’ Writer

    Derek Kolstad, writer for the “John Wick” franchise, will write and develop a series pitch based around the popular game “Dungeons & Dragons,” Variety has confirmed.

    The game, which features dice, a dungeon master and an active use of the imagination, has encouraged fans across the world to host game nights and weave inventive stories of adventure. During the pandemic, it has built a new audience as creators’ livestreams picked up steam.

    Kolstad, who is also writing for Marvel’s “The Falcon and the Winter Soldier” on Disney Plus, is expected to craft a story that will capture crucial aspects of the franchise through a live-action lens. But Hasboro film studio eOne is also in talks to build upon the “Dungeons & Dragons” world through other currently unannounced projects, as well.
