Netflix To Add Seven New Original Scripted Series In The UK

Netflix has added seven new series to its original content slate out of the U.K., working with the likes of former “Mr. Bean” star Rowan Atkinson, Sam Mendes and Andy Serkis, along with new writing talent including Sarah Dollard and Sophie Petzal.

The shows, commissioned by the Original Series team as part of the streaming giant’s continued investment in the U.K., will all be written and produced domestically.

From Mendes and his Neal Street Productions is a six-part show called “The Red Zone,” which mysteriously teases “a comedy about football, but also not about football.” Meanwhile, Atkinson will star in short-form, 10-part comedy series “Man vs Bee,” which finds him housesitting a luxurious mansion while duking it out with a pesky bee.

Cutting the cord was supposed to save the customer money now if you want to see everything it will cost more than cable and satellite ever did.

Honestly, i think this is a temporary thing. Streaming only works when it's convienent and affordable, which it was when everything was on Netflix. With so many "me too's" launching, splitting up content, it's utterly unsustainable. They'll eventually die off and lisence their content back to whoever's still standing.

“The Red Zone” - I presumed with a title like that it would be about American football but it seems it’s an English series and the football in the description is soccer (where “red zone” is not a thing). Maybe it will become explanatory when the series airs.

The red zone is a thing in soccer and has been for years, Wenger was famous for using it to describe when his players were in the red zone and bringing it into the public domain in England.

    Discussing Jack Wilshire in 2011.
"One thing's for sure – Arsenal have not left him out of the side in the last six weeks of the season, even though the stats have said he's in the red zone."

    Stath Lets Flats

Fox Developing Remake Of British Comedy ‘Stath Lets Flats’
Fox is doubling down on British remakes with a U.S. version of quirky Channel 4 comedy Stath Lets Flats as its latest adaptation.

The network is developing a remake as Bren Rents, a single-camera comedy from The Good Place writer Joe Mande.

Stath Lets Flats, which airs on HBO Max in the U.S. was one of the big winners at this summer’s BAFTA awards.

The show follows an incompetent rental agent, played by creator Jamie Demetriou, who played the bus suitor with big teeth in Fleabag’s first season. In the show, Demetriou runs a Greek-Cypriot letting agency in London, owned by his father. It has echoes of the original BBC version of The Office or Steve Coogan’s Alan Partridge character....

I’m a Virgo: Jharrel Jerome to star in Boots Riley (sorry to bother you) Amazon series

Jharrel Jerome is heading from Netflix to Amazon for I’m a Virgo, a new series from Boots Riley.

Jerome, who starred in Netflix’s When They See Us and has gone on to impress in Netflix’s Concrete Cowboy, had a breakout performance in Barry Jenkins’ Moonlight. Now, he’s headed to Amazon Studios, with the online giant giving a series order to the coming-of-age story about a 13-foot Black man (Jerome) who lives in Oakland, California. Jerome is no stranger to Amazon, though, after Amazon Prime Video released Selah and the Spades.

Riley, who enjoyed immediate cult success with his debut Sorry to Bother You, has written the series and will also direct. He serves as exec-producer, alongside Michael Ellenberg of Media Res, Tze Chun and Jerome. The half-hour project, like Sorry to Bother You, is described as “absurdist”. It is a co-production between Amazon and Media Res.

“I’m thrilled to be working with Amazon on this project,” said Riley in a statement. “This show will either have me lauded or banned, and as such, I have demanded payment up front.”

“I’m A Virgo is refreshingly original and there’s nothing else like it on television,” commented Albert Cheng, COO and co-head of television for Amazon Studios. “No one is quite like Boots, and we’re so excited to be working with him and Jharrel on this fantastical, funny, and utterly unique new series. We can’t wait for our Prime Video customers to see it.

“We’ve had the pleasure for years of watching Randall as an anchor of our beloved series, Fresh Off the Boat. He is as hilarious as he is kind and talented. He introduced us to his longtime friends and collaborators Michael and Hieu. They blew us away with their taste and passion for creating television shows from their own unique perspective as Asian-American creators, and we knew immediately that we had to be in business with them. They’re smart, driven and brimming with ideas. They share our desire to bring voices to the screen that are underrepresented and in doing so, create series that reflect the drama and humor of the world we live in today.”
